100% right. Meeting a professional fighter is the best thing that can happen to one of these guys. Don't fear those who are vastly better than you, because they can handle you without hurting you, in much the same way you would handle a child. Most of them won't hurt you badly cause they know there are consequences to that stuff. Fear those who are just a bit better than you, the ones who may need to go all out on your ass to win, or sometimes don't even have any clue what kind of damage they will actually end up doing at a certain level of power. They are the ones that will hurt you. It's just like in sparring, you always keep your guard up tight when you are sparring the new guy.
Yah, & I'd even learn from watching for a long time before asking to be taught...you have to have a good attitude to ask for instruction, if the better fighter has integrity.

Lol. I'm an old guy, in my 70's. 50 years ago, during a time when I was always talking shit to a friend of mine who boxed Golden Gloves, I learned a valuable lesson. I was about 6 inches taller than my buddy and outweighed him by about 50 pounds. One day he finally had enough of my smack-talk, and calmly said, "well, let's just put on the gloves then." Having been the instigator for so long, I would have looked like a fool had I chickened out then, so I pretty much sealed my own fate by accepting his challenge. After I had laced up my gloves, I put my fists up in the classic John L. Sullivan pose. Literally before I knew what hit me, he put a dozen punches cleanly to both sides of my face and finished with a straight-on *Pop!* that bloodied my nose and ended the fight. To this day, I am glad he was my friend, because if he had not been, he could have easily beaten my face to a pulp before I even tried to hit him. And so, I learned just how powerful a weapon speed is in the boxing ring. I also learned just how stupid it is to poke the bear.
I used to spar with this guy called Kartu Arang. His record is not impressive and neither was his stature. I'm 5'11 and was about 62kgs/137lbs. He could not have been more than 5'5 and 52kgs/115lbs. I remember hitting him with EVERYTHING I could put into my punches and he didn't budge, not one bit. He just smiled and kept waving me on. We were due to spar 3 rounds and I was spent by the first. Thankfully he knew I was just a dumb kid and only peppered me with what felt to be about 30% power. I never judged anyone on their skill based on size again. It was funny to watch him spar new guys as well, seeing them in my position from the outside of the ring. He sparred a 6'1 75kg/165lbish dude and the guy could not work out how he kept getting hit in the face, nor how whenever he hit Kartu he never moved hahaha. Good memories

1981 I was part of a local informal fighting club, about 40 kids, of them, about 12 in my weight class. It was well run. We practiced and trained daily. Totally NOT pro, it was sloppy but fun and managed. I was in the upper middle of my weight class, not great, not terrible. We had one kid show up who was actually training in a real gym. He was nice kid, not boasting. I got in the ring with him once. He made me look like a clown and honestly he was not even trying to be mean or anything. After, he reassured me after saying that he could see I put in some work, encouraged me to come to the gym and he'd give us all pointers, basically in so many words said the gym would let us audit the gym for a full session to see if we liked it. Humble, nice kid. I felt so out-matched sparring with him lol. People have no idea how hard real fighters train and drill and work out and spar.

Some boxers are naturals too. I'm old now, but had a 30 year old little guy come into the gym and was practically undefeated in his amateur record of around 30 fights. He trained in his basement on a farm with his fiancé and I thought there's no way he has skills. After sparring with two of us everyone wanted to know his secrets lol.

In the 80's I owned a very popular nightclub. Had a bouncer that was 5'10" and maybe 165 lbs. Never seen a tougher man. One time I watched him put down 4 guys that encircled him within 15 seconds. And once he was challenged by a 6'0' 300lb powerlifter who had a reputation as a bad dude. Fight spilled into the parking lot. My bouncer put him on the ground at LEAST 20 times. The dude was bloodied but kept on, so much so that my guy was begging him not to get up every time he put the guy down. He was scary fast, accurate beyond belief. I've witnessed a lot of 'bad dudes' , but this guy beat 'em all.. Oh, and by the way, he's now in prison serving a life sentence without parole.

A reason why so many people quit martial arts, whether it was MMA, boxing or anything else, is because they believe they're the toughest. And when their first round of sparring occurs, their ego gets shattered.

I'm not trying to boast or anything but for me it was the other way around, I went to do Karate, I beat everyone in sparring and I lost all motivation to do karate. It wasn't a big town so it was the same problem with Tennis. Online ladder in esports is a great way to find someone better than you at something and I LOVE that.

As a white man he had mad respect to a black man who saw his potential and helped him elevate himself. My grandfather was of this generation. He flew bombers in WW2. He had mad respect for the Tuskeegee Airmen. Tbh, they shouldn't even have the opportunity. Go with some of the amateur fighters first. You don't play ball on the corner and challenge Jordan to a game. Why would he accept? What's to gain? Not really bragging rights, but plenty to lose if get hurt or hurt them. Waiver signed isn't a guarantee you won't get in trouble. The risk vs reward doesn't really equal up.

I was bullied for years by a guy in grade school who had a reputation for being a tough guy. His name was Ziggy. One day by chance we got into a protracted fight at a construction site. I wanted to quit, but he kept coming after me. Eventually we got into a clinch and I saw this six-inch spike go right past my head as I fell. I immediately gave up. About a year later, I caught him with a frenemy of mine and I went after them both. My frenemy ran away immediately, so I went after Ziggy. Because I was the aggressor, Ziggy chickened out after a few punches, like most bullies do. It didn't take much to see he was really just a coward. My sister's boyfriend happened to watch the fight, and he praised me for taking on two guys. It did wonders for my self-esteem.
These videos are so satisfying to watch! Honestly even if you've ever held mitts for someone who boxes you would understand how quick and how hard someone who trains can hit. And that's just for those of us that train regularly, let alone challenging pro fighters who are the upper tier of any athlete that will step into the ring. These guys are delusional.

Never fight on terms of the guy with training in a specific style of fighting. I've lost to a friend handily who had training in boxing and I don't. I won in a Taekwondo (military) match against him very easily, he wasn't trained in it. So we decided to test our self in a no rules fight and turned out when no rules we are actually fairly evenly matched in a straight up fight. He has slight advantage in smaller enclosed space, I do better in larger more open space.
before i got to old and in such bad shape i only feared two kinds of fighters. one was a boxer and the other a MMA fighter. and now that i am in my 60's i can honestly say i have NEVER started a fight.

17 year olds would beat most people in most things, no doubt about it. I'm not saying to hit them, I'm saying they would usually win their fights.

I was bullied for years by a guy in grade school who had a reputation for being a tough guy. His name was Ziggy. One day by chance we got into a protracted fight at a construction site. I wanted to quit, but he kept coming after me. Eventually we got into a clinch and I saw this six-inch spike go right past my head as I fell. I immediately gave up. About a year later, I caught him with a frenemy of mine and I went after them both. My frenemy ran away immediately, so I went after Ziggy. Because I was the aggressor, Ziggy chickened out after a few punches, like most bullies do. It didn't take much to see he was really just a coward. My sister's boyfriend happened to watch the fight, and he praised me for taking on two guys. It did wonders for my self-esteem.

Never fight on terms of the guy with training in a specific style of fighting. I've lost to a friend handily who had training in boxing and I don't. I won in a Taekwondo (military) match against him very easily, he wasn't trained in it. So we decided to test our self in a no rules fight and turned out when no rules we are actually fairly evenly matched in a straight up fight. He has slight advantage in smaller enclosed space, I do better in larger more open space.
