Born in Newcastle in 1970 so I would have been 5 when this was shot, Something you will never see again, the swing bridge open for traffic, I remember my Grandad taking my to the quayside market and the bridge opening, this brings back so many happy memories, thankyou for sharing them.
HMS Newcastle & HMS Glasgow at the Neptune yard, i was 16 years as an apprentice. Still remember the loss of life from the two ships being fitted out. September 1976.
Tom Pearson your right , i worked on both the HMS Newcastle and HMS Glasgow in the Neptune yard , I also went on sea trials on the HMS Glasgow in 1978 as the apprentice Shipwright , great times . Gone but never forgotten
Great to see , born and bred in Wallsend , used to play on the ferry landing so seeing the river brought back great memories. What was the music ? It really suited the film.
Thanks very much for sharing this footage. I am sure the NE Film and Sound Archive would be interested in adding it to their collection. (I don't represent them but have a film of mine stored there).
Nostalgic video for Tynesiders. I would like to use an extract from this in a video I am putting together about my uncle from Newcastle who was lost at sea in a submarine sunk in 1942 would this be ok?
That's the Tyne at its best, till the men & the unisons & there constantly strikes killed the ship building & ship & repair on the Tyne all together... Thanks guys you were thinking very hard of the kids of the future.....🤔
Without their ‘constant strikes’ as you put it, you wouldn’t have a job with any decent rights and conditions. I guess you voted for Thatcher back then? You sound like you did. That monster and her cohorts destroyed industry quite deliberately as she vowed she would break the unions especially the miners unions by doing so.
