Pyrrhus entering the Argos still had war elephants. Unfortunately, they caused more trouble than use. First, they delayed the entry of troops into the city, because they did not fit in the gate. Soldiers had to remove their towers, then reassembled them after passing through the gate. During a chaotic night fight in the streets of Argos, Pyrrhus realized that he had no chance to take the city and had to retreat. But the gate was blocked by the body of a dead elephant. Pyrrhus sent a messenger to his son, who was part of their forces outside the city, to tear a fragment of walls down and enable evacuation. Unfortunately, the king's son misunderstood the order and at the head of the troops marched into the town through another gate, increased general chaos. Seeing the hopelessness of the situation, Pyrrhus decided to get out of the city alone, riding through the crowds of fighters. According to ancient historians, paving his way, he killed a local soldier. This was witnessed by the mother of the victim who threw a tile from the window, hitting Pyrrhus in the head and depriving him of consciousness. The unconscious king was severed by a Gallic mercenary. This was the end of Alexander the Great's cousin, the best commander of his time and the only hellenistic ruler who defeated the roman legions.
