This isn't a replacement for a Dam. Dams act more like a battery, storing the potential energy of the water behind the dam to provide energy on an as needed basis where as these are designed to create energy on a small scale for a specific location, at 'run time'. Kind of like a solar panel that sits on a house, vs a mobile solar panel used to charge a cellphone.
The difference is a matter of scale, not technology. Turbines like these are present inside dams already. It's how they generate electricity.
Dams are designed to provide energy for entire cities vs these point of contact energy generators designed for small communities.

Hydrokinetic turbines aren't meant to be a replacement for dams. They are an additional way to use water flow to generate energy in places where dams may not be a good option.

this is nothing new. I lived in a locale in Missouri that had a small generator in a stream thats 50 years old Problem is you can only get so much energy from a "channel" and they are just as dangerous to fish and wildlife. Its not a bad way to capture energy from streams, but its not a replacement for any large dam

Correct, the technology isn't new, but this company's business model is neat in that the turbines could be placed in the 160,000 kilometers of irrigation channels that bring snowmelt in the Rocky Mountains to agricultural areas in the western United States. The system is aging and losing water, but it’s hard for water districts to justify the cost of repairing them. The company’s solution is to place its hydrokinetic turbines throughout these waterways as a way to generate renewable electricity, which would pay for upgrades to the irrigation channels. This would serve rural communities.

I mean it’s a good add on just not competition for the enormous power of dams. Though I have seen this applied on small creeks to power homes with battery backup

That could be mitigated by putting a screen in the water around the area these are installed if it becomes a problem.
