- Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
- Alfred Tennyson, 1833.
Music: Gustav Holst - The Planets Op.32 Jupiter - Фільми й анімація
John Gielgud IS an awesome Actor. He lives on through his performances, immortalized in film but more so in the actors he continues to inspire.
Love Sir John..His Tempo ..His Gravitas...His Elocution..Hate that it's a draw for a bank--Regardless... I wouldn't have missed this for the world
Who cares, it brought us this so we should all be grateful. And Sir John got his well-deserved pay day.
He just reads the last part of 'Ulysses', not the whole poem. But I think he does it perfectly.
Yes. We know it’s not a 1 minute poem
The whole poem would’ve been way too long. It’s a 1 minute commercial.
Outstanding
Mesmerizing!!!!!!! There's nothing to say, great poetry and masterful performance ...what ideas and what temper !
"...till I die." That one moment was simply sublime.
A great actor. Sadly missed.
A truly legendary actor I wish he were still with us.
I saw John Gielgud in 1964 when he was touring his one man show 'The Seven Ages of Man' in New Zealand....but this reading of Tennyson....well it doesn't get much better than that !!
The human soul must never yield, a wonderful version of a splendid poem (or part of it).
He was 92 when he did this and you struggle to remember what you went into the shop for…
Background Music: excerpt from 'Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity' , by from "The Planets" suite, by Gustav Holst. I love that part...
perfect diction. what delivery, what rethoric.
Perfection and beauty in words and performance.
"till I die"!
Yes, through all difficulties to the starry skies, towards the shining stars and beyond.
Even in his 90s, Gielgud still spoke and performed like nobody else.
Yes, that's how it done. May you find the Isles of the Blest, sir.
Menendez: "Study Ulysses and be ready."
I absolutely loved this genius~ Thank you!:)
Seems so appropriate now in these troubled times
They should have done one of these for Thomas's "Do not go gentle into that good night."
I had dinner with John several times at a mutual friends house in SANDWICH KENT many years ago
A charming man
I know the style is now out of fashion, but who reads poetry as well as this, these days? And what a wonderful poet Tennyson is - also out of fashion. Are we living in a world which knows much about great art?
Gielgud’s style will never be out of fashion
The music is The Planets, Op.32-Jupiter.
Barry Niu nope. Its a the tune of “ i vow thee my country”
Good to see the old queen in action again.
Are you talking about your mom?
Very interesting voice
The music is I Vow To Thee My Country
It's not Nimrod from Enigma Variations. They use that one in Ben Kingsley's recitation of Ozymandias.
This music comes from the middle of Jupiter, from Holst's The Planets.
yes. yes it does.
I don't think there are many things to match a really good recital - and it takes more than a good, projective voice. It takes real understanding of the content of poem to draw the listener in - not just an ability to follow the cadence. This was wonderful.
@zoidbergnoise The TV-tropes page of BHH, but that still counts right?
Call me an idiot, but what's the music? I keep hearing this piece but I've never learned its name.
Hi Kyle!
Isn't this "Jupiter" from the Planet Suite of Holst? Yeah - the poem would be great without it.
I vow to thee my country
Why only a part?
"Oh for a bank,, i will take a six figure sum,,, and i will tell you for how much!" Sir John Gielgud.
I can't believe this is in Black Ops 2
@cheeriosinabowl Great art is universal.
@JONNOG88 I think the title is "I Vow to thee my country"
Nope
In the words of Brows Held High, "PRETENTION HEAVEN!!!"
the planets!
Jupiter!
I'm going to attempt to watch "Trash Humpers" in its entirety. This may come in handy.
@satireknight
....true. Everyone has different tastes and temperments.
am I wrong or they didn't mention Tennyson?
My Odysseus.
2022 ?
@jg2904
... well, true enough.
What do Raul Menendez and Oancitizen have in common? A taste for poetry, apparently.
Elgar, Enigma Variations (Nimrod's theme)
Cordis Die brought me here
@kronoscorvinus I'm sure his mother would have been proud.
This is a bank advertisement, seriously?
@KidMillions ah. its done by oancitizen a reviewer online. He does reviews of artsy films and used this in a joke he had. Apparently few people know about it...which is sad really.
PRETENSION NIRVANA!
(I
i believe you mean, "PRETENTION NIRVANA!"
Music: I Vow to Thee My Country :)
Better known as Jupiter from Holst's Planets Suite
Nope
@KidMillions A series by OanCitizen from Reveiwtopia. He calls this Pretention Nirvana lol He thinks it's beautiful. :)
@KidMillions he uses this particular joke in his ken park review. Just look up Brows Held High on google and his blip account should show up as the first hit. The show is hilarious man.
Well, if you like Edward Hopper you're ever welcome. lo/
anyone else here because of brows held high?
Imagine a world where ads are like this, not interracial porn-propaganda.
What?
What kind of ads arw you getting?
Who came here because of Cordis Die?
Upper crust acting for the elites.
Giełgud
jesus I'm old
Pretension Nirvana!
It's called poetry, for which there are different conventions. Back to watching television for you, you philistine!
You don't get the joke, do you?
Oh, it was meant to be funny! Who'd have guessed?

Watch this and come back when you're done.
***** That's where I first saw this also. And it was awesome. And so was the review!

beautifully recited but shame about the music
Barely audible, what a waste. Crank it up!
When real Americans think of their ancestors who journeyed West through the forests, across the plains, deserts and mountains to the Western Seaboard they can take pride in a poem like this written by a White Man for White Men who built America and the words are from an English White Man who was inspired by another White Classical Poet whose golden haired ancestors came down from Indo Europe on horseback and settled in Hellas and gave us the mother of Western Languages. No multi cultural inclusivity needed here and no Hollywood types need apply.
