That's exactly what happened, there are certain spots in the rift that AOE effects clip through and that elevation change from bot river to red jungle has been buggy about it since the new map was first released. Sometimes you'll even have part of an AOE visible on the river side and dissappear under the geometry of the jungle side. Luckily the ult barely whiffed everyone so it didn't impact the fight. I am unsure if the clip eats the abilities or just renders them invisible, someone can correct that I'm sure
