I am hearing the bass 2 as the Rickenbacker. The both are very well played and sound perfect in the mix, I THINK WE BASS PLAYERS CARE MORE ABOUT THE BASS THAN A LISTENER.
Clever video. As you mentioned there is so much discussion about how much one sounds like the other. We see a few Hofner's used here on country sessions, hollow body basses are great for ballads. I am not surprised how alike the two sound in the mix here and I guess this is the Ric neck pick up we hear. So is the Hofner the first bass? I personally like Rics a lot more. Just my 2 cents.
Cool comparison man. Funny you think bad audio here it sounds good to me . I listen a few times but I play da P bass mostly...I never seen a 5001 hofner where I am in Mexico. Have to go to California to get it. Very good playing man!
Thanks for watching Miguel and thanks for your kind words. The audio thing is a new compressor I have that I'm still figuring out you can hear it pumping away...
Wonderful video! I've got a Hofner Contemporary Violin Bass with Pyramid flatwound strings, and a Rickenbacker 4003S with Thomastik Infeld flatwound strings, and I love both basses very much. It's funny, because in your clip I slightly prefer the Hofner cause it pops out more in the mix, and I played on my friend's album earlier on this year and we also found that the Hofner sort of made it into the mix in a better way than the Rickenbacker. Of course the Rick had a way of sounding mighty and growly, but it needed more tweaking.
These both sound so very good. I have a Hofner on the way from Thomann in next few days. The factory is not far from where I live. Very good recording of both. I guess these are flatwound strings? Thank you for a great demonstration video!
I do own an Epiphone copy viola bass and Rickenbacker 5-String bass. I can actually tell that the first one is Höfner and the second one is Rickenbacker. Also, you played the song that is similar to "Misery," which it's a second song of Please Please Me album.
A Rick can sound so sweet, thumpy and hollowbody-like? I'm impressed! I preferred #2 and actually thought it was the Höfner. Both actually sounded incredibly similar, with #2 being a little more open in the attack. What I thought would be the effect of the hollow body seems to be the open articulation of the Rick's single coil.
I originally thought the second one was the Höfner as well. Because it originally sounded more hollow. But it turns out that what I believed to be a more hollow sound was actually a sharper sound. The Rickenbacker 4003S has a deeper, sharper, solider, and thinner tone. Whereas the Höfner 500/1 Violin has a blunter, fatter, higher, hollower, and muddier tone.
Awesome clip you made. No BS just playing the thing. I am thinking about getting a Ric bass or a German Hofner. This doesn't make it any easier though for me to choose. They sound very close here in the contact of a song. Rick #1 Hofner #2? Very clean pick playing too well done. Please let us know the result so I can buy my next bass man😂. Subbed to your channel
I think the first one is the Rickenbacker and the second is the Höfner since the first one sounded more solid and the second one sounded more hollow. However most of the people in the comments think the opposite of what I think. So I could be wrong. Oh R.I.P., turns out I am wrong! 😬
Not the first person to get em mixed up. I guess it shows that its more about how we play rather than what we play. I seem to just always sound like me... Thanks for your comments🙏🎸
@@danfelixmusic2536 I played this video again last night. And since I already knew which of them was which, the first one definitely sounds more like a Höfner or a hollow body bass guitar. But it isn't easy for me to tell by any means.
@@danfelixmusic2536 Here are some 'Is it a ... or ...?' video ideas that I came up with: Is it an Epiphone Casino or Gibson Les Paul Standard? Is it a Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul Standard? Is it an ESP E-II ST-1 or Fender Stratocaster? Is it a Fender Jazz or Rickenbacker 4001S (4003S works too)? Is it a Fender Jazz or Fender VI? Is it a Double Bass or Höfner 500/1 Violin? (though they would probably both have to be at the back of the mix, or it would be a dead giveaway)
@@danfelixmusic2536 Yeah, but what about an 'Is it a' video? Since the one where you compare the two guitars isn't one where you have to guess which is which.
I think you can get a Ric with flats to sound close to the Hofner tone with some palm muting and it sounds like you are getting pretty close here. In the mix they're harder to tell apart than is just soloed. I personally think the Ric sits a little better ion the tracks. They both sound great here though. At the end of the day the player counts more than any gear. Good to see a video that is useful in a practical sense too, well don, I subbed to ya channel!
Excellent comparison. Hard to tell I though he Ric was first but then on closer listen I think maybe it was second. I'd much rather own a Rickenbcker than any Hofner though. Overpriced for what they are.
I think the first one sounds like the Hofner, with that woody, present tone. Either the guitar is out of tune or, the bass is having intonation issues, which again would be the Hofner. In the second clip, I’d say it’s the Ric. Tone is thinner and not as present in the mix. The bass seems more in tune with the guitar too, but there still seems to be a bit of an issue there.
I am hearing the bass 2 as the Rickenbacker. The both are very well played and sound perfect in the mix, I THINK WE BASS PLAYERS CARE MORE ABOUT THE BASS THAN A LISTENER.
True on all counts! Thanks for watching my content🙏
First bass is a Hofner,2nd.is a Rickenbacker, no doubt. The thing is that the Rickenbacker have so many more tones switch. Nice video!
Thanks a lot and you are right on🤘

Oh yes, both have flatwound strings

Nice! A ric 5 string would be interesting to play. Is it really heavy?
@@danfelixmusic2536 It is neck diving but it’s not as heavy as jazz bass.
@@IndieTimberStudio I have no dive on my Ric.
I have an ash J that weighs in around 5kg. Tone is wild but too heavy to gig

I found that by using the neck pick up and rolling off the tone on the Rickenbacker with flat wounds that it gets quite close to the Hofner.

Hofner first Ric 2nd

The Hofner is thumpy as usual and the Rickenbacker has much more sustain. Those would be the first things to give it away for me.
Right on! Both great in their own way
Hofner's are muddy most of he time especially low down the E string. They get lost in low end mess
Mine gets a little fuzzy on the B of the E string. Like it has a dead spot.
