We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acres homestead. We just finished building our log cabin overlooking our pond. We are trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey living the rural life and developing our property and becoming more self sufficient.
For me that corn is perfect.. I love the stuff.

I've never had cattle bloat from.too many corn husks don't forget to cut the corn and give the cattle the stalks

My stalks go through a shredder and back into the garden , but then I don't have any livestock feed.

Mix up a bottle you can squeeze and shoot a distance (or kids' water guns) with Dawn dish soap in water. Soapy water will drown those wasps. They shed just plain water but the soap breaks the water surface tension.
Yellowjackets are bad this year. We eradicated a nest yesterday. If you wait until dusk to do it, they are all in the nest.
Goats and cow will eat the green corn stalks also cut as you pick is easier to do.
Nothing better than home canned corn.
If you have a chipper, run the stalks,, the cobs and any rejected ears through it and pack it into a barrel. After it has fermented a bit the steers will love it.
Hahaha, add some sugar and some heat and catch the drippings. Watch out for revenuers, LOL
For ground hornets. Use about 1/2 bottle of dish liquid detergent. Wait until about 2 hours after dark, give honets time to return to nest. Lay a square of screen mesh over the nest entrance. Weigh mesh down with bricks or stones (keeps them from escaping nest). Pour 1/2 bottle of dish detergent into the nest entrance (right through the mesh). Then flood it with water hose about 3-5 minutes (or more). Done. No more hornets next moring.
Before you harvest any more sweet corn, check out Fluty Lick Homstead's last video. He has the slickest way of shucking sweet corn that I have ever seen. The ear comes out absolutely clean. No silks. This method would have saved me hours and hours over my lifetime.
I have done something similar to how he does it. I sort of squeeze it out like toothpaste, wearing gloves because it's hot. I'll have to try his way of shaking it out.
Hey Evan here in Minnesota most of us freeze corn..... so much easier. Pack in food saver bags, after blanching and I usually do 2 cups per package. I put a bowl (upside down) in my big fix a mix bowl. Then set the corn on top of the upside down bowl and cut it off. Then I can bag when it gets full and saves my counter from getting so dirty. I pack it in the bags....no salt and no water. Some of my relatives freeze with cream. Yea I don't need the extra calories. It tastes like fresh off the cob in the middle of winter. Shouldn't have to worry about peppers cross pollinating. They are self pollinators, each bloom actually pollinates itself and it generally happens before the flower ever opens. If you want to cross peppers you actually need to carefully cut the flower pedals away before it opens and cross is using a small paint brush. When you do that, only the one bloom that you crossed will be a cross, the rest of the peppers on the plant will still be whatever you originally planted. Some people think their peppers crossed because they are hotter or sweeter or in some way different then what they expected or what they got from the same seeds the previous year... This is not the case though, the difference in the fruit is being caused by either nutrient/Micro nutrients or from stress. Good looking garden you have there!!
The steers would love the whole corn 🌽 stock we use too.
Once when I was a kid we had pasture full of ground bees. Dad got rid of them somehow but I don't think that he used water😁. I was stung there more than once. The bees hated the tractor.

If you're going to be barbequing save some ears of corn, with the husks still on. When you're ready to barbeque, get a clean 5 gallon Homer Bucket, place the corn with the husks still on vertically in the Homer Bucket. Fill the bucket with water and let them soak for a couple of hours. When you're ready to Barbeque, take the corn with the husks still on and place them in the barbeque. Let them cook within the husks. They will steam within the husks keeping all the sugar and great taste within. Turn them occasionally and in about 30 minutes they are done! Carefully husk them, they are quite hot!! You'll have some of the best tasting corn you've had!!! Enjoy.
The very best way to cook ears of corn is in the microwave! Wash an ear, leave all the husk on, microwave for 4 minutes per ear in an 1100 watt microwave, remove from MW and cut the ear at the widest point next to the stem end then squeeze the ear out of the husk. Squeeze so all the silk comes off with the husk. Careful as it will be VERY hot, so much so it will take 5-10 minutes to be able to eat. Enjoy.
Someone gave us some canned pears preserves several years ago.........Were oh SOOOOO good!....Great for breakfast time.........
Put a window screen over the opening of the nest. Pour 1/2 bottle of Dawn dish soap in the nest then flood with water. It kills the bees or hornets and is safe for the garden soil. Make sure that you put 2x4 around the screen which will keep the bees in the nest.
@R Brown My son just had the same thing happen to him while cutting his yard...hornet nest...he got stung several times and he called me about how to get rid of them. Gave him this and the entire nest was killed off that day.

We didn't end up making jalapeno poppers until 2 days later.

A couple comments on corn. It’s one of the few things we don’t can. Just seems to look better frozen. For many years I wouldn’t try a white corn. I just liked yellow corn. Then I tried Silver Queen. It’s by far the best. Each year we try one of the new varieties but none compare to the Silver Queen.
We froze sweet corn last year so I decided to can it this year and see how it turns out. Since we have never canned it before.
Silver Queen is a very old and wonderfully sweet variety! My grandpa grew it in the 70s and always swore by it. He’d grow about ten rows. And we always cut off the kernels and froze it.
When I harvest my corn I blanche it for 6 minutes, ice water bath it for 6 minutes, put 4 ears in a gallon vacuum bag, vacuum seal it and freeze it. Tastes like fresh picked corn when microwaved 2 minutes per ear from frozen.
Instead of growing a single row you should grow them in a small square. That way they can pollinate better
I don't shuck my corn, I just put it in the freezer shucks and all, when it thaws it tastes just like it came out of the garden. Surprisingly, there is no freezer burn because of no moisture.

I did freeze some that way also. So I can compare them, see which taste better.

I just love the taste of fresh from the garden vegetables. I remember as a young child walking through the garden, picking different veggies and eating them right then and there. Of course we never used pesticides or anything like that. One of my chores was to pull "squash bugs" off of some of the plants. Great memories.
As far as bees, I stay away from them as much as possible. One sting will cause the area to swell really bad. More than a few stings would probably put me in the hospital. I keep some medication on hand because I am very allergic to bee stings.

I do not garden or can (well, when I was in grade school I had to help my parents), I do not have any animals...I say that because I love your videos. Your garden makes me want to come and harvest, that is my favorite job of gardening. My dad grew up on a farm and we always had a small garden. He was a Pastor and we received blessings from the church members who shared with us from their gardens and farms. My mom always canned until she went to work full time. You brought back fond memories even if at the time I didn't appreciate it. Thank you for your videos.

I always thought that corn was not over ripe until the kernels dented. At least that what I was told by my mother.
No one likes bees close to the house but they are the best pollinators we have. People should relocate them if possible.

We had to do battle with many, many wasps when we moved out to our new place last Fall. The place was overrun with them. The BEST weapon I found was simply a sprayer with an adjustable nozzle filled with Dawn dish soap and water (heavily concentrated). We'd spray them on their nest at night and they'd just fall and die within seconds. It was actually kind of fun 😆

We froze 46 two cup bags of Nirvana sweet corn last week, going to start tomato sauce tomorrow. Hopefully everyone is having a good harvest.
After cutting the corn off, scrape the cob to get the juice off...lots of juice come s off the cob
3 things surprised me about this: 1. I'm surprised you got that kind of pollination out of just 1 or 2 rows. 2. I'm surprised it looks so good without adding any nitrogen, and 3. I'm surprised you had the patience to let your corn get to that level of maturity. I always seem to have the opposite problem in picking it too early. Thanks for the update!
I was surprised as well. I planted 6 ten foot rows and it did terrible this year. I ended up with 7 ears and even those weren't fit to eat.
The bees helped with the pollination.
@@terrycastor8299 sounds like a water problem or old seed, what was your spacing like on the plants? I crowd mine father than have them too far apart so I get good pollination.
@@jameshaynie4570 , I uses new seed. We had a lot of rain, but no more than Evan had. We live within about an hour from one another. I spaced mine about every 6" with 24" between rows. Just an odd year. A friend I go to church with and who grows a lot of sweet corn has had a terrible crop as well.
@@terrycastor8299 I used new seed also corn came up, lettuce and green onions,and Walla Walla onions did not give me a single plant. Other crops about 50%. It has been a very strange year. I planted 2 tomatoes plants same variety, 1 is almost 6 feet tall, the other is 2 feet both are loaded with tomatoes. LOL

when we lived on the farm 60 yrs ago, dad would grow silver queen corn. so incredibly delicious - small white kernels and super tender - i am from maryland
Those were either Hornets or Yellow Jackets. If the nest was in the form of a ball, they were Wasps (Yellow Jackets). Ouch, they do hurt!

if you like creamy corn, scrap the cob after removing the kernels.
Celery does best in shade , too much sun makes it green which imparts a strong chlorophyll taste which is unpleasant . The paler celery is the better it tastes.

I am going to try the weed fabric next year like you used. A lot of my garden got taken over by weeds. My corn did do well. We have gotten a lot of good corn although we did have a couple of ears that truffled…

Have you tried cutting the corn off of the cobs and then freezing it in bags ? Add milk also and precook . Yummmmm it is good .
More male pollinating corn needed to help create a full bodied ear of corn. Now the time to chop all the males down and seed broccoli etc for cow chow

Glad to see you had a good harvest. We had to many wind storms this year and it really wrecked our corn. tomatoes made and potatoes made up for it though!

Try doing 2 short rows instead of 1 long one. should pollinate better. Garden looks good.

We just harvested our corn this past week, processed and froze it. You can't get any more fresh than corn straight out of the garden.

Two suggestions, first when you cut the kernels off the corn, if you use a large bowl instead of the cutting board, cleanup is a LOT easier... Second, your pigs will totally demolish any leftover cobs, rejected ends, etc. I don't know if they can ever bloat like the steers could, but ours never did, though we had far less corn stalks to pigs than you would (we had 150 or so pigs at sweet corn harvest time, less through the winter). I don't remember if they'll eat the stalks/leaves/etc, but they will at least chew on them. Our pigs would chew on anything they could get their teeth around, including not-so-small trees, safety glasses, etc :)

Foe my bee problem At night time I would boil of pot of hot water or two and dump it on the nest
Chop up the corn stalks and give to steers. Those bees were ground wasps....they look pretty similar. Next time dust with food grade diatomaceous earth. Or, build a wasp trap and make a brew with sugar water and add some box, just a bit, and set it next to the area. The wasps will drink it take it to their brood and feed the brood, the borox will kill them all. Buy pure Borox, no other ingredients in it.

I have never heard of planting a single row of corn, it does not germinate well. My minimum is 3 rows wide by however many feet long it takes to plant the number of plants I want. I use drip lines so I plant according to the hole spacing which currently is 12 inches in a row and my rows are 12 inches apart. Staggered from the next row. But since corn is a heavy feeder as you stated, I only do spacing that close if that area was not planted the previous year with anything other than peas which were tilled back into the ground as green fertilizer . The rest of the time I use 2 foot spacing in freshly and heavily composted soil. My garden is usually smaller than yours and I can or freeze my vegetables as I pick them. So for corn I put my water on to boil and then go pick the number of ears that will fill the pot, bring them in and shuck them, put them in the boiling water for 6 minutes at a full boil to blanch them, then into ice water to stop the cooking, then into a vacuum seal bag, vacuum seal it and into the freezer right away. When you are ready to eat some, take a bag from the freezer and put it into the microwave for 2 minutes per ear. It will taste like fresh picked corn on the cob. I vacuum seal from 2 to 4 ears per bag. Once I have that batch in the freezer, I go pick another batch. Corn loses flavor fast once picked, even faster once shucked , that is why I do it that way, if eating it fresh, I pick just enough to feed the dinner group when I start cooking the entree. I bring new meaning to the term cook and serve, LOL

i co planted with green beans, corn did great ... i should have waited for the corn to come up first however!
@@NotMuchHere for co planting with beans I think I would let the corn get at least knee high before planting the beans. I have never tried planting 2 crops together. I am guessing the beans use the cornstalks as poles. Don't the beans wrap their grippers around the ears of corn?

Best thing to kill wasps and bees is starting fluid. Wait untill dark and spray the nest, Kills them instantly!
My corn was good and bad, peaches and cream 1st time growing. I had a lot of a grass type weed. Do you. Plant your corn in the ground cover fabrick.
