I’m reading A Court of Thorns and Roses-
🧚🌶️
♥️🖤♥️♥️🖤♥️
I feel enormously resentful when I read (or watch) anything with anything related to romance at the moment. I think it's because I have a teenage daughter and have become acutely aware of how unrealistic stories of love and romance have really influenced- and damaged- her and her friends' expectations of what they "should" be experiencing. And my daughter is super level headed, and doesn't consume a lot of media- it still bleeds in to their realities. I feel like such a crank old lady because of it, and as an avid reader, it means I can't read pretty much anything now except for boring hard science fiction (which is so toxic male... ugh... except for a few great stories with female protagonists) and non-fiction, which can be great, but sometimes I just want to slip into an easy read about females living normal day to day lives without new planets or having to cross the globe in search of a lost butterfly or something.
I can totally understand how you'd feel that way about romance! I can see how having a teenage daughter would impact your reading experience. I have the ease (at least in this point of life) of just eye-rolling my way through unrealistic scenarios...but I totally get not wanting to reach for it. it was interesting hearing your personal perspective on book genres right now...thank you for sharing
@@bybun Thanks- after I wrote that I walked into the bathroom, looked at myself in the mirror, and said "you're turning into an old crank, you know". :-) I definitely enjoy hearing about these books and adding stuff to my "when I am less grumpy" list. So I am enjoying these reading vlogs.
@@gingerblue hahaha, not an old crank whatsoever!
I can totally relate as I have 2 daughters. My fave genre (which I can’t seem to read anything else as there hundreds of them) is Historical Fiction based on true stories and real women. Yes some of them have a romantic arc in them but they are all about incredible interesting and brave women wrapped up in brilliant stories ( mostly. Some are obviously not as good as others. I always look for a minimum of 4 stars on Goodreads usually ) They are so inspiring and fabulous too for teenager girls to be inspired by but so so good for crankies like us 😂
@@Retro-love- Hey, I'm vegan too :) I love non-fiction/and fictionalized retellings of heroic and brave women- I read a bunch of WWII stories a few years back. There were a few where the author just HAD to mine for romantic or sexual intrigue, even if there was none, which was maddening. It's just frustrating because in "men's" fiction romance is sort of a bottom-of-the-line inclusion, if it's added at all, but in so-called "women's" (and even in non-binary fiction now..._ fiction it's almost ALWAYS included. That and family stuff. There's got to be more to write about... creativity, awe, journeys, travel, cultures- and thse things happening not as a result of grief or heartbreak. Just people of all sexes doing really amazing things and sharing stories- fiction or true.
Have you watched Yellowstone? It's incredible...also set in Montana...never thought I would like a Western show but it is seriously SO GOOD.
I have watched it! didn't get far though...I did get sucked into the spin off though, 1883?
I've been skipping book of the month a lot lately too.
I read The Changeling after having watched the series on Apple TV. I enjoyed it so much I had to pick up the book to answer the questions I wouldn't get until season two. I thought it was great so I'm glad to see this author in you vlog. I'll definitely have to check Lone Women out.
The Changeling is definitely up high on my 'want to read' list!
💙
I'm going in the complete opposite direction! I usually love lighthearted 💙romance💙 reads, but I've been reading American Gods recently.
ohhh nice!!
**Feb 2024** I know you're behind, but not a whole year 😂but moving will do that to you!!!
good catch!! thank you!! my brain is fried from moving, haha.
Love that your reading videos include so much of your art! Do the pages of the Hobonichi bleed through? I always think the pages look so thin but you are able to put so much medium on them!
thank you!! and no, the pages don't really bleed (for most pens/media)...that's what makes them so fun. and once they're dry they get all crinkly (which is the best part, haha).
I am currently reading Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup, it's a humorous meta fantasy romance where an author is writing a romance, and it turns out that the characters have very strong opinions about the whole thing and keep letting her know. She is a first time author, an "actor combatant" who reviews sword fights in movies and rates armor. So far it is a light, silly and fun read.
oooohhh this sounds like a fun concept!
If you're looking for more 'western' books might I recommend Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver. It's set in Arizona and just has gorgeous writing and a really compelling story, family drama. There's also a romance for your romance era
oooohhh I'll add it on Goodreads, thank you!
Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors! I need to reread Animal Dreams, especially since I recently moved to Arizona from So. CA.
This is brilliant, I love your vlogs ☺☺
thank you!!
💕 Hope your move is going well.
I'm listening to - The Buddhist on Death Row by David Sheff. Non-fiction.
Heavy hitting, tears..reflective. Loving it so far.
Funny story how I came to read it. My son shared a movie with Steve Carrell and Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy. He highly recommended it and thought it would be good for me, even though the content is very emotional and that's when I researched the author that Steve Carrell plays, which led me to the book and there you have it.
🤓 I totally want to see your mood read pile. I do that with library books. Borrow way too many because I can never guess what exactly I want! I don't read very much romantasy but one I'm waiting for is A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle Jensen.
💛💛💛
A Fate Inked in Blood is in that pile funny enough!! that was my Book of the Month pick for March ;)
🫦 😂
hahaha that's a good one!
I had By Bun ESP! I am in the middle of packing for an out of state move, when suddenly you popped into my head, I peeked on YT, and there you were! So lovely to see you, thanks for the wonderful book updates, and I hope you and the fam are starting to settle in and enjoy your new digs!🧚🏽♀️✨🌟🏡
omg how funny is that?! good luck on your move!
@@bybun 👍🏽😂
Love it when you show us your artwork for the books 🌈🎀
thank you!! I'm trying to share it more often as I settle into a reading journal routine :)
