- Let's take a trip back to 1994 and look at one of the most popular sports cars at the time, the Chevy Cavalier Z24 3.1 V6. This is a second generation Cavalier and one of the most reliable cars you will find. Remember having two keys, one to unlock and another to start the car? Today I'm showing you what you got when you spent the equivalent of $41,500 on a Chevy Cavalier Z24 in the early 1990s.
I'm in the process of restoring my 1990 manual Z24, I love that car so much, I've had that car for close to 14 years now, it is my first car and I'm never letting it go!
I also had one in red as my first car, I wanted to do the same thing and restore it but I had to sell it to pay for school. I was hard to let it go and wish I kept it but it was the right the decision in the end. Enjoy your restoration!

Not sure if anyone pointed it out yet, but the jump from $8000 Cavalier to $20k-$23k for a Z24 is drastically inaccurate.
The Z24 package added approximately $2k to the Cavalier price tag… not $12k-$15k
My dad got me a 90 standard z24 as my first car and I’m in love! I absolutely adore how it sounds and how it drives! Though we do need to restore it 😂

Your pricing is VERY wrong. The 1994 Cavalier ranged from $8,900 to $13,900. $13,900 for the Z24 in 1994. Not $23,000. It wasn't until 2009 that the bottom line Chevrolet (Cobalt) cost UP TO $23,000. That was the Cobalt SS model.
Had a 1992. The 3.1 V-6 had lots of torque, and it was a real sleeper. When it woke up everything else on the road with you was in the rear view mirror. It was fully loaded, and had all the options. It was the same color as yours. I really miss that car.

I raced a 1992 2 door 4 cylinder one when I was 10 on a asphalt oval track won my first race no practice with it against Saturn's which fly on oval tracks the 2door manule ones I was only non Saturn lol and it would hail the mail for 5 races then had to refresh motor, but after that I moved on to faster rear wheel drive oval cars like latemodels and modifieds
$23,000 Idk all about that😳 $16,000 for a coupe and $18,000 for a Convertible is more like it.
Look at my restored one! 230,000 miles and still runs Strong and throaty💪

Here is a tip for you may want to take seriously. It would be very wise of you to have a new timing set installed. History has shown that the chains are prone to break around 200,000. That in itself is bad enough, but the fact that the 2.8L and 3.1L are interference engines, you do not want to gamble with time/mileage. If the chain was to break, the engine will be damaged, to some degree. If you do decide to get a new set installed, I strongly suggest using only the well known brands. No white box specials.
I had a 93 Z24 manual transmission
I modified it so much and was getting about 210HP from the engine with hypertech chip, catalytic converter out and resonators no mufflers
I was keeping up with stock fox bodies and beating 4.6 Mustangs all day long
Only car I miss. I sold it in 2001 for a 97 Camaro SS

I bought my wife one brand new in 1988 . 5 spd ,and a medium blue color like yours. She drove it for ten years then we sold it to get something bigger. Ran great when we sold it with 160k .
Just wanted to point out we paid 13k for our new Z24 . Not sure where you got your information saying they were 20-23k new in the early 90s. That’s not true. Also they were not fast with 125hp. The Pontiac Trans Ams and Camaro Z28s of that era were 225 hp. I know I had one in 1990.
We really liked our Z24 very much. Great gas mileage and reliability. Ours was fully loaded with sun roof , power locks, cruise control. Digital dash was cool to.

Had a 93 Cavalier coupe with manual transmission new. Signed it over to a young couple when I received orders to Italy. Later got a 94 Cavalier RS sedan with automatic transmission. The manual was a blast on winding mountain roads but a PITA in stop and go city traffic. Fuel filter was very easy to replace. No lift needed. Just a pair of pliers and an adjustable wrench. Had my 94 Cavalier until 2002 when a guy in a Ford F-250 ran a yield sign and hit my drivers side fender.
I still own my 88 Z24 only thing is the paint is really dull no rust or dents. I was going to sell it, but decided to keep it and do a engine swap. Starting that project after I'm done with my 69 Chevelle project which is about 90% complete.
Beautiful car ... I owned an 88 Z24 With digital dash . I miss it still to this day .

Had owned a '87 Z24 cpe back in early 90's. Wish I never let it go . Brought the car used. White with a Blue cloth interior Automatic.
My dad had a white 88 z24 auto and had the digital gauges...also that chime brings back so many memories
I had one exactly like this one. Except it was burgundy and my center caps on my wheels had a color matching Chevy bow tie emblem. Had sun roof as well. Other than that same everything. I loved it, and it was also my first car ever at 16yrs old. Always regretted letting it go. Traded it for a truck. Was never happy bout it. So yes this did take me down memory lane. Glad I seen the video.
My first real car was a 93 cavalier 4 cylinder 5 speed. I put a glass pack on it and started it exhaust where the cat converter was. Tinted the windows and had black lights in the inside with fog lights on the bumper along with a sound system. That car was my baby. I loved that car and still do. I wish I still had it today.
I got a 96 Beretta Z26, and I can see a bit of Beretta influence on the dashboard design.
All time favorite car! Along with Grand Prixs , and Grand Am Gts. Got my black on black Z24 in 1994 at the ripe young age of 22. And I agree, fabulous car to have back then!

Reminds me of my '89 Z24. If only the 2.8's were as reliable as the 3.1's. Bought with 69,000 miles on it and it only made it to 91,000 miles.

Wow! It looks really cool in blue! We still have my dad's 1991 Cavalier VL. It needs a new ignition switch, but it's still running great. Chevy needs to resurrect the name.
I have the 1992 regular one when I was 12 years old and it was one of my first oval track asphalt race cars nothing was a beast I went out my first ever race with no experience in one and laughed the whole field of 30 cars. But after that I moved up to rear wheel drive mini stocks they was 2.3 mustangs and pintos and older corrola carb cars pushing them at 8500 rpms-10,000 rpms very well built strong motors and lots of torque and power so much fun.
I had two z24 an 89 and a 90 both great cars the 89 was automatic and the 90 was the 5speed both great cars!
Lady, for 23k you could have bought a cobra mustang in 93. If you paid that much you got broke off something fierce
That Cavi is super sweet. I loved every one I've ever had, I call them mini me's (mini camaros) although I'm a chevy man I have 2 dodge magnum wagons along with all my bowties. I prefer the 2.0 and 2.2 cavis and looking for another 1st Gen square body sedan or wagon to put an 95-02 2.2 pre ecotec. And I agree 💯 about these cars being awesome

the 2.8 and 3.1s are great engines. I have a 92 cutlass convertible same color same engine. I have owen it since 1995...she still runs great. It has spent years sitting at times and allways starts with a good battery. Had issues with rough idle even after doing idle learn...and it slowly got worse and worse to the point it began stalling at times,if i redid the idle learn it would improve but within a day or so it would start acting up. I checked and checked for vaccuum leaks even bypassed the brake booster temporaily but it made no change....but i didnt relearn the idle with the booster bypassed. So only a year later and i try it again and learn the idle with the booster blocked off and volia it idles perfect and stays idling good. i replaced the booster which was still working seeminly fine no noise or hissing...the car still stopped fine. With a vac gauge hooked to the old booster it would leak down about 3 inchs of vaccum a minute so it was a very very small leak, the leak in itself didnt affect how it idled...but the ecm trying to compensate for that small leak would cause it to idle rough . anyways nice car

I love those wheels, I bought some for my '92 Wagon. Mine have the spokes kind of milled out on the center, interesting that yours don't. I can definitely attest that you can't kill these things, I've got three of them, all with the 2.2L LN2 and the highest mileage one has been through hell and runs stunningly well with 273,000 miles. Took it on a road trip from Denver to Chicago and up to Milwaukee last summer when it had 250k and only had to top up the oil. I would trust that car to take me anywhere. I'd love to see the Cavalier go into the lake and still run but I can't find that video. Sweet car, can't imagine how it feels with the 3.1 and all that extra torque.
my first car was an '89 Z24. I still have it. it only has 167,000 miles. I hope to get it restored. It sits for months without being started and still starts every time.

I had a purple 94 stick shift and I had to sell it cause it was rusted through on the floor and my break lines were all rusted too and one of them exploded on me. Luckily I didn't crash.
I had a 91 that was red with black leather interior. It was a rare option for that car and she was a quick little fireball....

I have the 1990 cutlass supreme with the 3.1 auto. and you have to change your oil and antifreeze sooner than what they recommend. And change the cad converter sooner too. or the engine some how it will find its self dead. and you think it's a battery or starter. I think not. because the engine is dead. And you will have to swap if you want to keep it. And keep on moving.
I'm going find me one of these one day.....

Had to retire my 98' Z24 five years ago with 250k automatic -original engine and transmission minus the AC. I wish I could find another one.

I bought a 1994 Z24 brand new and it was $16500. Idk where the hell you’re getting your $23k price from. Lol. I have the window sticker showing the price. My car was loaded with sunroof and all. Nowhere near the price you mentioned.

Crazy price for a near 30 year old vehicle. They were cool back then but now you can see how outdated they are. For over 40K you can buy a decent brand new luxury SUV. Some things are better left in the past. This is a good example.

@@chevylover3681 Heck yeah it is hey I paid $700 for mine back in 2007 a 1994 Chevy Cavalier RS mines didn't come with the body side skirts, or the 3.1, instead it came with a front chin spoiler and a rear spoiler 2.5L "Iron duke" and mines had the drop top tinted sunroof and I did have positive traction on mines as well, and very low miles, and a little rust on the bottom of the doors but it was such an easy fix with a mallet and rust oleum paint, then I went over it again with base and clear coat, the engine was strong as a bull and very fast and at the same time good on gas, I miss it so bad now, I had to sell it due to my license was revoked I tried to blow it up on purpose rather than getting $250 from the junk man I mean I dogged it on the dirt road and ragged back streets burnout after burnouts I couldn't believe it. it actually made me mad so I ended up selling it anyway.

Only problem I had with mine was the ignition wire to the starter (common problem). Silly thing shorted out in the steering column which ground out various electrical components nightmare to find easy to fix.
How did you fix it?have problems with my gauge closter.
@@darwinpena1845 the purple wire coming out of the steering column is the starter solenoid I just hooked up a remote single pole switch to the purple wire used a input from ignition. When I turned on the ignition all I needed to do was get momentarily power to the purple wire.Again it was in the column so connect to the purple wire after the column.
Guess I missed the part as related to the $41500 in the title. Is there an extra 0 in there? No way you think it is really worth $41k? No way. But who knows, you think it was $23k new in 1994 and you use brush car washes.
Can we say rip off. 41,500 for a car that's 30 years old with 170,000 miles. Yeah sure I'll let you continue with that pipe dream. I had a 92 Pontiac Sunbird which is pretty similar to that body style. Pontiac and Chevy or basically damn near the same car. But there's no way I would pay $41,500 for a car that old with that many miles on it. Not going to happen in this lifetime. Too much shit wrong with it. Not to mention the fact that you parked on top of the nose of the car behind you. We could see it in the picture of the car under the shed
my 1993 Cavalier RS with the V6 was about $13,500
Honda Civic is more reliable and more desirable but this cavalier is beautiful.
We had a 1992 Cavalier for 16 long years. My uncle went the Honda route. His Honda had a timing belt break at 48,000 miles. He did get an extended warranty which paid for his new engine. When he got it back the transmission went. Again his warranty covered it. Our Cavalier was still on the original engine and transmission 16 years later when we traded it in for a new Impala. We also owned three Cavaliers, and all of them were good cars.

After 100k, you'd use 10W30 in summer and 5W30 in winter.

You obviously had much better luck with yours than i did. I had a 92’ in HS, and i hated that car. Absolute piece of junk. They are actually very slow as well. 160hp. The worst car i ever owned. The oil filters are about 4” from the ground and if you hit it something on the road, there goes your engine. I hated mine with a passion.

I'm am too fan of them but I'm not a fan of a 94 model I'm in 80s type z24 guy I believe the 80s models are a bit stronger in the motor and transmission
You are on crack if you think that is worth 41K. They are at best valued at 10k if it has less than 20k miles and is brand new condition,. Those cars were titled as the working mans low budget Camaro. I know I bought one off of the showroom floor it was the Hawaiian Orchid Metallic model and was better than the others. All of the Z24's are 3.1l 145hp max I am re-doing my Z24 and changing the center council etc... your title is just clickbait.
Not all Z-24 were 3.1. older ones were 2.8

The 94 cars didn’t have the 3.1 emblem on the front fenders or the z24 emblem on the upper door panels. I worked for gm back them and owned a 94 z24. Like I said in an earlier comment the price you mentioned was way way off. My z24 was $16500 loaded. The convertible version was only around $21000. The price you mentioned isn’t even close to what they really were.

I bought one for$2000 back in 2006 . Mine was a RED 3.1v6 5spd. The sunroof leaked and has small rust spots on the door right above the trim typical for these cars

Second car I owned was a 1984 Buick Skyhawk coupe with 2.0L engine and 4 speed manual. Basically a Cavalier with a Buick badge.
