Thanks for this Troy. I think in terms of intervals, in the key and/or the underlying chord (if I can figure it out :) ) so this works for me. It’s great to see you work it out as you go along, way faster than I can! My personal preference is blues, blues-rock, so really enjoyed this video. Cheers
I had just starting reading King of the Blues - The Rise and Reign of BB King by Daniel De Vise when I saw this post. I love it when a plan comes together and the planets align. Thanks for this video. I, like many of my half ass guitar buddies, play BB Kingish licks, but we've never really looked under the hood. It's good to dig a little deeper. Thanks again.
Slavish note for note learning of rote solos is the worst way to become a creative player. Much better ways of learning are figuring out the principles behind the solos , and then using the underlying concepts to actually " create " something that is unique to you. I met and spoke for about half an hour to BB King after a concert back in the seventies , and he confirmed this idea as a prefered approach to learning to me and another young guitarist as we spoke with him. I never wanted to play like BB, I just wanted to find from him a road or two as an entry into his neighbourhood, but taking my own route through the blues roadmap that wasn't even his alone. If you just reproduce Joe Bonamassa solos with ease, what is the point? He doesn't reproduce the solis of others, so why should you? The reason to play good solos is to express YOURSELF, not just clone someone else's work. It's a good idea to analyse a phrase or two, for the purpose of learning, but ultimately, if you're not making an original statement, you may as well not play guitar.
@@troydownwardmusic Thanks Troy ; I didn't mean anyone should give up, but we should try and add something more to the lexicon, by standing on the shoulders of giants, and adding anew to the culture. I'm glad you took the time to emphasise some of the overall concepts in BB's solo, and didn't claim to be reproducing it in detail, so I can see that you grt my point. I was speaking mainly to answer your query as to what you should have as content, and I realise you understand this. Considering how long I've been playing, it's not surprising that I've taken the long view of things, and although I can't, even now, play half as well as you, I'm satisfied that at least I don't sound like anyone else ( even if sometimes I sort of wish I could) ..., so I can always say that at least I'm not a clone of someone else! (That's largely because I'm such a slow learner, I don't have the technique to do it)😊
Always get some great takeaways from your videos. Thank you@
Cheers Pete that’s awesome to hear

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment. I love the time you've taken to write it, I guess I'll just give up as you say!
Happy playing mate.
