I bought a CAAD12 Ultegra with caliper breaks a couple weeks ago. This is my first road bike and I'm 100% happy with this purchase. I've put a little over 100 miles on it so far. It climbs the hills here in Colorado beautifully. Before purchase I was between the CAAD12 and Trek's ALR 6, but after test riding I felt the Cannondale was a better choice for me. Thanks for the review.
I love my CAAD 10 with Ultegra Di2, as for the internal cable for the rear brake, I've had no steering issues hands off. With Di2, shifts are flawless, gear usage is easier and I use their wider range because I'm not fine tuning the shift due to cable stretch or wear. A quick responsive frameset with lightning precise shifts, add up to a dream ride; I love Cannondale!
I bought the CAAD 12 Disc 105 a couple of weeks ago. It is my first roadbike. I haven't ridden it yet as it is winter here but I can't wait to hit the streets. The welds on the frame all look really smooth.
I had a CAAD10 and now have the CAAD12. I love them both, but I think the 10 was a bit stiffer for climbing and sprints. I raced on the CAAD4 years ago and it had huge diameter tubing which made it crazy stiff.
Personally, I think Cannondale produces the best aluminum road bikes. If I want an aluminum road bike, Cannondale is my first choice. Of course, I am sure some would disagree with me.
Now I am even mote excited about finishing my CAAD12 build! I just started building up a new 2106 CAAD12 (black/smoke grey) frameset, and am waiting for a flat mount brake caliper to arrive to finish my build, as I am using the parts from my cyclocross bike which had post mount rear caliper. I love the finish and quality of the frame. I cannot wait to put some miles on this beauty! Thanks for the review!
Hi there, nice video... However I think you missed a very important difference between the CAAD 12 versions. There are 3 different cranksets: the 105 comes with the Cannondale SI, the Ultegra comes with the Hollowgram SI and the Dura Ace comes with the SISL2. They do make a difference in weight and performance. I am buying a CAAD 12 soon and I rather pay a more for the Ultegra just to get the Hollowgram than getting the 105 and upgrading it. Thanks!
+luciofilho1 I did exactly just that. I got the ultegra + caliper brakes so I can have the Hollowgram. I have a Synapse 105 alloy and I replaced the crank with a Hollowgram SL MkV. I wouldn't get a Cannondale bike without a Hollowgram.
I have a CAAD 10 and upgraded to Ultegra Di2, the frame has a small hole on the head tube under the internal rear brake cable for the main cable that comes from the main junction box under the stem. The rear derailleur has the wiring routed through an area under the bottom bracket stay on that side.. It's great to have no cables exposed to the elements. My only concern with these frames are the bb30, bottom brackets, which seem notorious for creaking/ clicking; I am hearing slight clicks, but mine come and go and I'm not sure it's the bottom bracket, but plan to check soon! Other than that, it's a great riding bike, very spirited in acceleration and highly responsive. I can't imagine what a CAAD12 must be like!
I keep hearing about BB30s creaking. I just did 14 crit races this past Spring and just had my BB30/ Hollowgram Si serviced a month ago for the first time since I purchased the bike in Feb. 2015. Bought a Praxis bb adapter and Dura Ace 9000 crankset (my CAAD10 is Dura Ace 9000 everywhere else). Haven't had any issues with my BB30 whatsoever. Just serviced because it was abused, but it's been very reliable otherwise. I have to admit that I have always used Shimanos on previous race bikes and NEVER had to nor felt the need to service the bottom bracket. So far, the BB30 on my CAAD10 is performing fine. The Praxis Dura Ace will have to wait a bit longer.
just bought a caad12 with an ultegra in the supercool red color. will edit this comment when i had my first rides in with it. first impression is just mindblowing. such a beautiful bike.
Thanks a lot for all the info in your videos. Helped me decide on my new bike. Got a caad10 from 2015 with sram force. Awesome bike. Thanks for the advice!
Regarding wheels: do you really have to replace rim-braked wheels every 5000 kms? I've ridden mine for tens of thousands and still going strong. Of course, cyclocross/commuting is another thing.
Could you do a comparison of the Synapse to the CAAD? I've been thinking about getting one and it seems the Synapse would be ideal for me as I ride mostly paved trails working torts my first century but see videos of people doing it on "race" bikes all the time so I'm not really sure. Also aren't the CAAD 10's "women" bikes and the 12's the men? Is there a difference between women and men's bikes other than reach ? Thanks
I've made an episode on this topic here: ua-cam.com/video/LVS_Rp6TwIc/v-deo.html The Synapse will be more comfortable and you can do centuries on it for sure! CAAD12 is in fact men specific, having larger reach, but also different saddle and bars. There won't be maybe so much of a difference in terms of the geometry between CAAD12 and women's CAAD10, but changing the saddle and the bars to a narrower and perhaps more compact can be expensive too. I'm not sure about the cranks arms, but you may have a 170 mm long ones on women specific models, comparing to 172,5 mm on most of the CAAD12 bikes. Hope it was helpful!
Disk brakes are the component manufactures response to attempt and develop a solution to the problem of carbon rims. Weather its tubular or clincher, from melting by overheating and begin to deform or melt the adhesive glue during excessive braking causing the tubular tire to slip off the rim or the brake calipers to deform the rim making the clincher offset from the groove seat and bead that when descending on a turn may slip off causing you to fall and have an accident. Thats why you see competitors fall in the Tour de France.
Don-York this is not completely true, tubulars are far more resistant to heat as they have no presure applied when the rim is hot, + clinchers usaully have the brake surface on the unsupported hook for the bead, whilst tubulars are supported by the surface the tyre glues too. i only run tubulars on my bikes.
Just read about someone fitting 28mm Conti GpII`s on Caad 10. Read that this is impossible on the Caad 12... If they fix this, I might consider it, but I`m happy on the old Evo.
seems to me that cannondale in 2017 re-position its alloy lines of bike as the lower end product....or they just cut corners to the bone....if you look at the list, now all alloy bikes across the board has capped at ultegra/force group set
Will it be a bad idea to have custom built CAAD12 with Tiagra group set (due to budget limit). I know it is a bit of injustice to such a great frame set :). Would be great if somebody can share their opinion
Sean Flynn, I just installed 25mm gatorskin tires on my Caad 10. Fits perfectly, no rubs and still had a bit more clearance. Don’t think 28mm will fit though.
Thanks for sharing! I've heard that you essentially get "only" 5-year warranty on an aluminum frame, because the lifetime of the material has been determined to be about 5 years. Can you confirm this?
Would love to have one as a crit bike so that when I lay it down I won't crack my carbon frame (colnago c50 2007) however black inc is not available in UK. Do you know if this will change or if I could get one shipped over?
Not sure if you can get one imported to the UK, but the Black Inc is being discontinued for 2017. I'm thinking it has to do with two factors: 1. Cannondale still has a lot of them in stock and 2. The introduction of Dura Ace 9100. They retail for over double the cost of the Ultegra model. They are truly special bikes, but most CAAD12 buyers aren't looking at all of the specs. The Black Inc version, actually cost more than many Super Six Evo models.
hello cannondany, im wondering if you could give opinion on upgrading from a current CAAD9 user. it is quite harsh but i've had this for over 5 years now and still love it. just curious if its worth buying the caad 12 frame only and moving components over? or maybe making my caad9 a commuter? thanks guy!
Hi there, you're kind of between two different project, right? Having a commuter bike or racing CAAD12 with older components... CAAD12 is super compliant, but with an aggressive geometry, not really suitable for commuting. Your CAAD9 bike is very durable and worthy ANY upgrades, so carbon bars and seatpost would be a good idea. It would also be nice to buy some wider tires, but I'm not sure, whether CAAD9 takes 28c. Double bar tape and good saddle make a huge difference too. On the other hand, if you were to buy CAAD12 frameset, it requires some BB30 cranks. I would rather go and rebuild the older one. Cheers!
+cannondany hello, well I have upgraded components on caad9 and run 25mm. I want to have this as dedicated commuter. the reason I consider caad12 is because the new technology in seat and chainstay. more comfortable I believe? but want your opinion if it's worth getting this as a dedicated, more long distance and racing bike?
I have put about 1100km on my CAAD12 and so far my longest ride is 76km. I don't know if this is the best long distance bike but this is my first roadbike so perhaps it is just my skill level.

Specialized Allez is really good too
I own a CAAD12 and the BB30 bottom bracket is horrible!
Jelmer van Kampen can you elaborate ?

I got the 105 disk caad 12 the frame looks so awesome with the blue accents and matt black finish
Yeah, the paint job is great.
I got the same. Do you get any frame vibration from the front disc brake when applied?
Did you order online? If so, where?
FELT also have great alloy bikes with race geometry, I have FELT F95 2012 and from distance it looks like carbon frame, really nice finishing
+Esseker Fit Yes, they make nice frames indeed.

I have a CAAD10 with full Sram Red, Reynolds carbon wheels, Fizik saddle, Time pedals, carbon bars and stem. It is delightful.
Riding CAAD12 for the last 3 years. Shimano 105 works fine. Caliber brakes. 54cm frame. So fast!
I have the caadx. looking to add the caad 12 next. I also have a roubaix that i am selling to get the caad 12. absolutely gorgeous looking bicycle
"Especially the green one here."
Dude. That is like, the most yellow bike I have ever seen. Did you know, that you are totally colorblind? :O

+Fahr Rad Yeah, it is a lovely one. I had CAAD8 with Sora/Tiagra components for 2012 and I loved it!
seems to me that cannondale in 2017 re-position its alloy lines of bike as the lower end product....or they just cut corners to the bone....if you look at the list, now all alloy bikes across the board has capped at ultegra/force group set
Gonna go with Trek's short lived aluminum Madone series as the best aluminum race bike, those puppies are stiff, perfect starter bike for a crit racer
I have a ten. I would love to upgrade to disk brakes. I have Durace on my Ten
Any sizing recommendation for this frame. Is it true that cannondale are sizing differently than other manufacturers? Thanks
Will it be a bad idea to have custom built CAAD12 with Tiagra group set (due to budget limit). I know it is a bit of injustice to such a great frame set :). Would be great if somebody can share their opinion
+Gijo PP try to wait a bit more and save for an Ultegra
I would stick to caad 8... Caad 12 frame with tiagra group is just meh... Its feels to me like buying a ferrari and fit a volkswagen engine into it:p
Thanks guys. Finally I bought CAAD12 105 disc. According to the dealer it is the first CAAD12 in India :)
+Gijo PP good choice i have the exact Same bike its awesome :)
Hi there nice vid, how is tyre clearance on the CAAD 10 , can you get 25mm on no issues thanks Sean
Sean Flynn, I just installed 25mm gatorskin tires on my Caad 10. Fits perfectly, no rubs and still had a bit more clearance. Don’t think 28mm will fit though.
Great information. I'm seriously considering a CAAD12 Ultegra or Red. Do you have a preference between Shimano Ultegra or SRAM RED?
I prefer the shifting system of Shimano levers, but in my opinion SRAM has better quality. I'd go for SRAM.
Thanks for sharing! I've heard that you essentially get "only" 5-year warranty on an aluminum frame, because the lifetime of the material has been determined to be about 5 years. Can you confirm this?
+Martin R. No, it is still lifetime :) www.cannondale.com/USA/Bike/ProductFamily?Id=be69932e-bbe8-4f5c-9a1d-b3a386243e89

What is the reason for getting an aluminum frame instead of carbon on a road bike you plan to race? Maybe the stiffness? Durability?
+David Pearl Price and durability. Moreover, the high quality alloy frames are much more compliant today, than even 5 ears ago.
I'll see if I can test ride one of these. See how it compares to carbon.
hello cannondany, im wondering if you could give opinion on upgrading from a current CAAD9 user. it is quite harsh but i've had this for over 5 years now and still love it. just curious if its worth buying the caad 12 frame only and moving components over? or maybe making my caad9 a commuter? thanks guy!

Going to order a CAAD12 105 next week hoping to get it first or second week of April. Let you know the results.
So what was it like?
So the geometry and frame material is the same? I think I'm going with a used caad10 then. Thanks for the info.
The only thing I don't like about my CAAD 10 is the cable routing - see my episode on that.
I can attest to this. My CAAD10 is a 2015 model, and I am about to replace my rear brake cable for a second time because of this. However, pre 2014 models have external rear brake cables, so if you're buying used, I'd get a 2011-2013 with anodized frame. That's the 1150 gram frame model due to it not having paint. Painted frames are about 200 grams heavier.
Would you recommend the CAAD 12 for a beginner? DO you recommend changing the mid compact crankset to a compact?
+Andrés Durán standard crankset look better
+Andrés Durán Yes, I run compact myself.
how wide a tire can CAAD12 take? really considering it but I ride in parks with different pavements. It has to be 28 or 32 to feel comfortable. Otherwise it is like fighting the floor all day.
It should take up to 28 mm wide tires.
I have a CAAD 12 105 disc brake model. I used Continental GP 4000 28s and they are too wide for the rear chain stay and rub, no problem on the front. I have not tried any other tyre make
I fit continental 28's no problem whatsoever on my caad 12 ultegra disc. Hmmm
A lot of that will depend on the internal rim width of your wheels
i use Conti Ultra Sport II, 28mm. They fit just fine. I am sure Gatorskins will clear as well
hi cannondany, I m gonna buy caad12 but I m little bit confused about sizing I m 185cm tall and 86 cm inside leg should i buy 56 or 58 thanks.
Im 1:90 and the guy in the shop told me to buy a size 60... I tried both but liked the 58 better... Its more comfortable for me to have a slightly smaller frame. So its personal prefference really... Try both and buy the one that feels the most comfortable.
Which better cannondale caad12, specialized allez sprint, or giant tcr slr??,,hopefully u answer my question,,thnks
CAAD12
Hi Dany
Im about to by my second roadbike
Im considering this 3 options and will love your help...
CAAD 12 105 (1600)
CAAD 12 105 disc brakes (1800)
CAAD 12 ultegra (2100)
Super Six Evo 105 (2100)
I'll apreciate if you suggest me some other choices
Thanks for your help!!!
+Jean Michell Mendoza Perez What's up Jean! The CAAD12 Ultegra DISC would be my choice. Whatever wheels you're gonna use in the future, this one will brake like crazy.
Great vid, very helpful, thanks so much!
+Instramark Thank you for watching!
Caad 10 Ultegra + Campy Bullet USB wheels since 2012. Difficult to beat. Caad 12 seat post and chainrings look strange. I would rather stay with the very fast Caad 10
Nice job Dany!
I also have a CAAD10 and just love it, not even thinking about changing it…
In your personal opinion, would you trade your CAAD10 for a CAAD12? I can see big improvements… for better or maybe for worst..
+Ricardo Luiz Turatto What's up Ricardo! No, I don't feel like I wanted to replace my CAAD10 with the newest model. I'm the kind of guy, who's pretty much attached to what he has. My Killer won't be replaced for FSI either. But CAAD12 is definitely an awesome bike! Cheers!
+Ricardo Luiz Turatto hello Ricardo,i have now also the caad 12.
its better in more comfort and the discbrakes are awesome ,so there some good improvements.
it rides even better then the caad 10.

+alex de jong Hello Alex, I´m glad you liked it!
Ride safe!
alex de jong Good to hear that!
I love my Caad 8, i love Cannondale.
they can claim all day that they skipped 11 because of improvement but I am absolutely sure they did it because 11 is too similar to 2 in Roman numbers
i think it's because caad11 sounds like "cadel evan"... and he is/ was sponsored by BMC
how do I buy the frameset only?
+Prastt Find your nearest Cannondale dealer.
you have interesting but videos but i would like to give some advice. Make them SHORTER. ofcourse by preparing and cutting what you are going to say by giving some conclusions. try to use more intonation in your voice and you could talk quicker because you talk in the tempo of a live commentary. just some critics for improvement. other than that keep up the good work :)
Caliper rim brakes any day! Caad 12 is a great bike!
Yes, let's talk about "Cannndl" bike, right?
I just purchase the caad12 105 disc I love it go to my channel I made video of her
+PowerStrokeharvie Nice one, and the SuperSix too.
+cannondany thanks the supersix is for the wife's
PowerStrokeharvie Have fun riding them!
I have the same! It looks so awesome with the blue accents in the mat black frame! Discs are really nice 2
