Brasstown Bald:
Highest point in Georgia at 4,784 feet
Located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest
Offers spectacular views of the Southern Appalachian Mountains
There is a parking area just below the summit. On the day I visited I paid $8 per person (children under 15 were free). Be sure to ask about the veterans' discount (I forgot and found out later that there was one).
To get to the top you can ride a shuttle bus that makes regular trips (it is free), or you can take the half-mile approach trail. I will tell you - it ain’t no joke!
On a clear day it is possible to see North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and even the Atlanta skyline!
On top of the mountain there is a visitor information center that opened in 1967. You will find an 8,000-square-foot museum featuring interactive cultural displays and natural history exhibits. Information concerning the local geography, climate, weather, history, and culture can also be found here. Employees are available to share their knowledge of the area.
There is also a small theater on top where you can view a video about the unique climate of the mountain.
Pack a picnic. There are various picnic tables around the park where you can enjoy a meal and the best of views!
