@@bmac2310I have honestly met Yolanda twice in Houston. Awful person so I am no fan of hers and didn't feel bad that my girl Patti cut off her singing that time!
Aretha really damaged the clarity of her voice by smoking. Patti Labelle always had more sustaining power than Aretha. But Aretha had a better appoggio technique than Patti. That's why Aretha's notes are clear, fast even vibrato, and she can sing phrases and runs at the very top of her range (Ain't No Way, Skylark, Respect). Most of Patti's notes are sustained on an open "waaaah" sound, similar to Chaka Khan. This makes it easier for them to sustain powerful notes, but they have more difficulty phrasing and doing melismas up there compared to Aretha.
This is not really true. Aretha did not attempt the high belts in songs you mentioned live often... in fact I've yet to see any clips of her actually attempting the climax of Ain't No Way live. And she never really had a better breath support technique than Patti. Notice how airy her voice was in the middle of her range even in the 1960s. Great singer but not 'appoggio'. Patti was classically-trained and when you really listen to her voice in detail it is very audible.
I also agree with what you said about other singers with great belting ranges. They can belt as high as Patti...but not with the same power and vibrato, and breath support. Patti's truly unmatched there.

Ms. Labelle is an amazing vocalist but Ms. Franklin was straight up genius. She knew how to contour her voice to add the affect she wanted. If they intended to do a comparison between singers who can hold notes the longest , they should have compared singers who are known for holding notes like Patti Labelle and somebody like Melba Moore or Shirley Bassey or Barbara Streisand.... Dionne Warwick was another that liked to hold long notes. Since this is Aretha and Patti Labelle and they have two different vocal styles, I really like and prefer Aretha`s tone much better . Aretha has vocal beauty while Patti Labelle holds notes for days and days , that`s her style and it would be a better comparison if another singer with a more similar style was used as a comparison. Patti Labelle vs. Melba Moore or Patti Labelle vs. Dionne Warwick .
Your reaction are lit and funny🤣🤣🤣Man I was laughing and enjoying with you. Patti Labelle ignorant, lol🤣🤣. I agree with your analysis. Ms. Aretha did her thang though. The female legends way back then aint nothing to play with, lol. Ms. Dionne, Tina, Aretha, Gladys, Patti, Natalie, Chaka, Barbra, etc. Their vocals and musicality is sick!! I sang on stage with Ms. Patti in her prime. No I didn't get drowned out either. I made sure I was ready for any and everything!!
It's also said that Patti Labelle has hit notes that opera singers can't even hit! So I knew Aretha Franklin was going to loose this battle but without Aretha Franklin is the better singer!
Aretha won for me. Aretha tone is better more pleasant for me to listen to. Her runs were no joke! Patti is powerful and can sustain a Note longer. Just can't take to much of the power. Aretha diction and phrasing does it for me. I know its about belting. I prefer Aretha belts
I would have put different clips of Aretha. The clips for Aretha are usually shorter than Patti. It's like showing a clip of 3 seconds before Aretha's peak note, and choosing songs that are not showing her flexing hard. Then, 7 seconds of Patti in her peak note. I love Patti, too. I love the clips they picked of her. I am in awe of Patti's powerful, beautiful voice. Both artists are the GOAT in my book.
I like both of them, and each had their moments. I honestly think they are/were pretty even. It just really depended if they were on form on a particular day.
I wouldn't say more 'soulful' but more smooth. Patti has a very punchy, bright, piercing timbre that isn't for everyone (I prefer it myself). Aretha is lighter, smoother and more balanced in tone.
@@KajiVocals Ya I heard that song. Don’t get me wrong Pattie is great yet Aretha gives me so many different feelings and emotions from joy, sadness, hope and on. Pattie is power and vocal thrills
Patti has more volume output, but it’s Aretha for me. Aretha knows how to adjust better as she goes higher, plus her tone is much more sweet/clear to me. It’s more of a preference, since both of these legends are titans that hold their own.
I'd actually disagree. When researching for my Patti vid (it's on my channel - almost 90 minutes of vocal insanity) I came to realisation that she actually has quite perfect control when she wants to. She often goes for grit though. But she has perfectly clean notes and sustains even up to C#6 (with vibrato). Aretha was more mixy but also more of a gritty singer (talking about her most 'famous' era that is). Aretha used to have a more Patti-like high range in her earlier years back when she sang in more of 'traditional pop' field.
@@KajiVocals That’s what I meant. When I said “adjust”, I meant that Aretha was much more mixy as going higher, while Patti just goes for that gritty strong sound.
@@Ryan_K535 Check this out - ua-cam.com/video/_g7TmvUX7Ps/v-deo.html Patti was ridiculously consistent on this Bb5. Even on B5. She did glissando up to B5 in her songs I Got It Like That and More Than He Loves You. Both very clear.
@@KajiVocals Now that’s a mix. That’s what Aretha usually switched to usually G5 and higher. Mixing can also improve tonality, because going full on as you go higher might come as a little aggressive. I never said Patti couldn’t, but most of the time she just chose to be a little aggressive and gritty, which can be a little too much for me. P.S- The fact that she is mixing early 6th octave is insane. Now that’s longevity
Whitney is literally known for her tone sometimes even more than her (impeccable) technique? Mariah is is more about vocal gymnastics and tricks like whistle/flageolet and Whitney is known more for power and sustaining belts, and for superior technique. The same way Patti is a better belter wirh more power and superior technique to Aretha

All day Aretha.
I'm with you. I Love me somebody label. Howevet people tend to find definitely not the best clips of Aretha.
Aretha's tone, melisma, and vocal technique is UNMATCHED! That's why she is the QUEEN!
She is just a queen, patti was the GODMOTHER.
nobody trying to come for Aretha Burger King crown lol
@@patgorden5002 Aretha is the Greatest... you're right...nobody can even try to come for her 👑!
@@jclef614 you are definitely right there's no one can come even close not inches to Queen Patti LaBelle
@@patgorden5002 Patti said Aretha is the best vocalist of our lifetime...so 🤷🏿♂️
I like both of them, and each had their moments. I honestly think they are/were pretty even. It just really depended if they were on form on a particular day.
The glissando to Aretha's F5 and the quality of the note itself was really good. The vibrato is also a factor
This was the error when you knew you were gonna get a better vocal performance performance live than on the record.. because they went crazy live
"QUEEN PATTI LABELLE ALL DAY EVERDAY"
And everybody's telling that "Big Bang" was just a theory ... Now here's the real "Big Bang" #BattleofTheTitans
People HAVE SLEPT ON PATTI FOR YEAARS
Surprised to see Aretha not sustaining because in the Amazing Grace film that’s the best I’ve ever heard her
Patti is better at belting but Aretha's tone is just more beautiful, more soulful.
I wouldn't say more 'soulful' but more smooth. Patti has a very punchy, bright, piercing timbre that isn't for everyone (I prefer it myself). Aretha is lighter, smoother and more balanced in tone.
@@KajiVocals Pattie doesn’t come off to me as soulful lol! Powerful yes!
@@shonmosley4215 I recommend checking out her You'll Never Walk Alone performance. The one at the Apollo in the 80s.
@@KajiVocals Ya I heard that song. Don’t get me wrong Pattie is great yet Aretha gives me so many different feelings and emotions from joy, sadness, hope and on. Pattie is power and vocal thrills
@@shonmosley4215 How about her version of People from the 60s? It's studio but still great.
Finally some real singers
Patti's F#5 was godlike.
@@Ryan_K535 B5 and then C#6 in her 70s ua-cam.com/video/wCIlnqyaD6Y/v-deo.html
@@KajiVocals Now that’s a mix. That’s what Aretha usually switched to usually G5 and higher. Mixing can also improve tonality, because going full on as you go higher might come as a little aggressive. I never said Patti couldn’t, but most of the time she just chose to be a little aggressive and gritty, which can be a little too much for me.
P.S- The fact that she is mixing early 6th octave is insane. Now that’s longevity
Keep in mind that most of the clips of Aretha was from when she young and Patti was still hitting the same notes at a much older age. 👑
SO TRUE...
Both are great singers ✌️🙏🥰
What is the name of the performance of Patti LaBelle when she hits a F5 can someone please tell me
THE ENDING LMAO
Lmao we definitely had the same reaction through this 😂
@ 12:26 damn mama Patti sounds like my cat when I accidentally stepped its tail
i think you should react to "female singers with fantastic belting technique" video, you would enjoy it with better clips
That’s similar to Whitney vs Mariah. One is more powerful the other is more agile with a better tone.
But whitney is also known for tone and agility lol
Whitney is literally known for her tone sometimes even more than her (impeccable) technique? Mariah is is more about vocal gymnastics and tricks like whistle/flageolet and Whitney is known more for power and sustaining belts, and for superior technique. The same way Patti is a better belter wirh more power and superior technique to Aretha
My two faves. You wanna really hear how powerful Aretha voice was?! Man check out her performances from when she was signed under Columbia records in the early 60s. Aretha tone is smooth and velvety. Ha Patti and her theatrics. Patti is a trip. She has so much power and range its ridiculous. Legends ❤❤❤👑👑👑
8:00 you definitely should react to that performance from Patti. It’s the BET Awards of “You are my Friend” one of my favorites from her ua-cam.com/video/vDErZ2lH6bc/v-deo.html
Actually it was Essence not the BET awards.
@@BigWhiteBoyLuvsPatti correct I was watching that night. 22 years ago.
I love both,
For high register (f5-D6) I give it to patti labelle, her mix is a true one, more stable, with more projection, aretha is good but her mix to me is too much heady.
Both legends
How is it more heady? When Patti is more heady and sounds nasal?
Yes i Got 2 b real
both great, patti for me, love her voice
I wish I could give a million likes to this reaction ❤️
Patti shuts Aretha down ANYDAY, ANYTIME.✅✅
Aretha is overall better singer especially in her prime! Her tone is better,Phrasing, agility and has wider ranger far going into her lows. Plus Aretha is the standard! She has influence Whitney, Mariah , Luther Vandross and the list goes on.
@@shonmosley4215 I guess it's just preference, because I've always preferred Patti's ASTRONOMICAL vocals/voice over Aretha's.
@@TheRemixstress You have every right to feel that way! I’m just saying as singer and not others signers we prefer Arethas voice.
@@shonmosley4215 I sing as well, and while I love Aretha's voice, I still prefer Patti's.....I like Aretha's tone better between the two.
@@TheRemixstress If I want to see belting and vocal thrills then Pattie! Yet, if I want to hear a soulful beautiful tone with range then Arethas! Arethas tells a story when she sings which is a important aspect for being singer. Love Arethas phrasing especially in her prime. Other than her Whitney’s is thee voice! Far as Male I love Luthers..
Love em ‘ both!
Get into the legendary Melba Moore. Sustenance & range beyond.
True to that and its sad that she is so underrated.
Indeed. Complete singer. Recently did a video on her. There is not a single area of the voice that isn’t developed.
No other artist can mess aretha, not even patti or whitney
Yes Yes Yes. You would think they could hear that.
Vocally both Whitney and Patti are stronger than Aretha but you're allowed to prefer anyone's voice
Aretha Franklin And Patti LaBelle Are Great Singer's 🔥 🔥.
The ending 😂😂💯
I just prefer Patti, altogether🥰
Omg the ending lmao
