This was a good video … another trick you can do with the G1000 is activate a visual approach in the PROC menu . Thos allows you to land at any airport using the gps signal and it also gives you a glide scope that works just like an RNAV/ ILS . Try it out .. works with any airport !!
Excellent tutorial Kip 👍 You are a natural teacher and I just can't get enough of your detailed avionics lessons. I believe the popular perception is that You Tube viewers have a limited attention span but I for one appreciate extended (feature by feature, knob by knob and button by button) avionics tutorials. The longer the better. Thank you so much for taking the time and putting in the effort to produce these great videos.
I just realized that the G1000 improvements also added a Track-Up mode to the moving map! You can get to it by clicking the "MENU" button on the MFD, then pressing "ENT" to get into the new Map Setup options. Press "ENT" yet again to open the orientation options, then roll the FMS knobs to change the setting, and "ENT" again to activate the chosen setting. Sweeeet.
Yesterday I hit that OBS button accidentally and wondered what was happening. I did not see how useful it really is. Thanks for that great explanation!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge - much appreciated, another great tutorial! In case you did not know this already, the OBS mode is also made available in the 530/430 - community mod "pms50-gns530" -the one you kindly referred to in another post...
Helpful and well explained … but just a bit of caution (for real word use) the GPS waypoint is set at the geographic center of an airport, if you have a very large airport or are using parallel runways the course may not be lined up with the runway in any useable fashion. If you want an extended centerline you may be able to select an approach to the exact runway and load (don’t activate) vectors-to-final.
Thanks Oscar! I feel bad about the 2-month lull. I just couldn't seem to get anything finished, and for no real reason 😂 Thanks for all the kind comments; they're very motivating. I'll try to keep the momentum going!
Actually the line you drew is a great circle radial, ie, the farther out you are, the more you won't be lined up with the centerline of the runway but you will be heading to the end of the runway. It's why an airway between two vor's are not 180 degrees from each other. the out bound course is not 180 degrees from the inbound course.
They finally added the OBS mode eh? bout time. Did they fix some of the other issues with the G1000 and G530? Such as the direct-to page being almost completely broken? I haven't had a chance to really get into the new update. They really need to hash out the G530/430 and G1000. Its one of my biggest pet peeves right now, even more so because it has Garmins actual brand name on them, there's no external 3rd party available option to replace it, and its not like implementations in literally like every sim since the early 2000s has had some sort of decently fleshed out unit.
They added some small improvements to the G3000 (brightness and track-up orientation options), G1000 (Track-Up mode) nd 530/430 (like it now auto-selecting "activate" and "load" so you can do the common Enter+Enter combo), but they're still very limited compared to what you'd find stock in X-Plane. But, there's some good news... Working Title is a dev group that's made mods including big improvements to the G1000, G3000, CJ4, and G3X. They've been hired by Microsoft, so we should expect all their work to be implemented into the base game (who knows the timeline though). At least for now, you can just use their mods: github.com/Working-Title-MSFS-Mods/fspackages There's also a developer who's made some improvements to the G530/430, which includes fixing many bugs like the infamous approach U-Turn, and adds some features like VNAV, traffic, and weather screens. Worth checking out as well -- it's here: github.com/pimarc/pms50-gns530
Great Series Thank You. How about going to this level of detail in the King Air. perhaps also throw in some Xbox controller tips with this level of navigation?
is it possible to enable obs only to display on the pfd/mfd the line of the runway while using heading or nav mode with autopilot? Like have my heading at say 180, but my runway is at 210 and have the display show me the line of 210, but keep my heading of 180 with autopilot in heading or nav mode.
Hey Geoff. The NAV radios are only needed if you're using a radio-based navigation aid like a VOR, or doing an ILS approach. In this video, I was using a GPS flight plan for my navigation. I have videos on both VOR's and ILS approaches if you want to learn more about those! :-)
@@KipOnTheGround Thanks Kip, I will check out the VOR video. I am looking at the OBS in the caravan using the G1000, and figured that I need to tune the VOR to the station I am using for my arrival.
I’ve just gotten into flying IFR on MSFS. Using the OBS is basically like a GPS overlay, yes? I’m asking because I would like to practice holds at waypoints along the flight route. This also brings me to ask if there is a way to get breadcrumbs or some other way to review the actual route flown after the flight. I’m used to reviewing my real flights on ForeFlight but don’t know how on MSFS.
OBS overrides the course to your current active waypoint, so you can decide which course to go to that waypoint on. If you have Foreflight, you can use it with MSFS with this free program: github.com/astenlund/fs2ff Or, if you want to keep your Foreflight stuff separate from the sim, but still want to track your flight details, you can use this free program as well: volanta.app/ Hope that helps!
Great tutorial. Prior to this video I was not a fan of the ATIS. I didn't realize how helpful it actually is. OBS mode and ATIS will now be my go-to when sporadically choosing an airport to land on. This is very exciting. Is there anything we can't do with this game?!
Unfortunately only the G1000 right now, but I’m sure it’ll be added to others in the future. Sim Update 4 is next Thursday so I’m looking forward to seeing if anything is added then!
Oh and I should mention an annoying bug. If you don’t disable OBS mode before leaving the sim, it’ll still be active in your next flights, and even if you don’t use the G1000! It’ll mess up your next GPS flight plan. It’s a really bad bug that I didn’t notice when making the video.
Kip, excellent as always! Staying with the approach topic, do you happen to know why or if VNAV seems to be deactivated on the G1000 ? Or at least it never loads a ‚VNAV profile‘ for me... Cheers!
I haven't tried a LNAV/VNAV approach recently, but last I read, VNAV just isn't working in MSFS (with the possible exception of the FlyByWire team's Airbus A320 mod). I did fly some LPV approaches a while ago though, and those did seem to work properly, but I think they might be more rare to find. I tend to just go for the ILS whenever they're available, since there's somewhat reliable in the sim :-)
Aye, thanks!! I was wondering if I‘m just uncapable to log it in properly ;-) You‘re really supporting us to get the most out of what works in there, please keep it up!
The way they implemented VNAV right now, or at least prior to update 3 that I noticed was it more or less just automatically captures a fake ILS glideslope at the FAF. So it really only gives vertical guidance from the FAF in. I personally just fly it LNAV only and do "dive and drive", or if I have time I'll calculate an approximate descent rate that will get me close, though sometimes I'll use the VNAV as a cheater sort of like a LNAV "+V"
Enjoyed your tutorial on OBS mode. Wanted to try this on my flight in a Cessna 172. However I found the OBS button greyed out even though I was in GPS mode on route to my planned destination. What am I doing wrong?

When you first turn on OBS, the course deviates to the left and since AP was on, it made that useless s turn to the left. How would you avoid that? Turn on NAV mode, set the OBS course, then turn NAV on again? Still a newbie with all of this.
Just temporarily switch to use HDG mode with the autopilot while you set up the OBS course. You can quickly sync the AP heading to your current heading by pressing the HDG knob in like a button. Once the OBS is set where you want it, you can change back to NAV mode when you want it to intercept that course.
