I Bought a Sad SAAB - a 1994 900i Convertible, Project or Too Far Gone?

- I left another note, and it of course that means I bought another car!
A big tick off my bucket list, despite not being a Turbo, this old 900 has weathered Swedish charm by the bucket load.... but it is probably just essentially that, a bucket. Sadly it's not had time, money or love devoted to it in years, and it really begs the question whether this car is just too far gone....?
Brilliant (again) you deserve more subs. I always wanted one, not sure why but an itch I have to scratch. Doesn’t divide opinion like a BMW or Audi, architect done well for himself, classless but classy. Love it! Get it running OK and sold with an MOT, let some enthusiastic have a crack at finishing it at their own pace.
Keep on with the uploads and hope YT picks up on your channel soon.
Even in that condition, that's a cool car! I'm a big Saab fan, but probably best to get it MOT worthy, then see how much you like it before going any further.
The normally aspirated engines last a long time if maintained. Just have to keep all the other bits working. Not fast for the younger, boy racer set, but retro cool...especially for the younger ladies! Here in Colorado they don't rust and we will kill for uncracked dash pads and moist leather seats! Do the minimum, polish it up and daily drive it to work. It will go 250k+ miles easily.
I think you should leave it road worthy, then have someone enjoy it as a cheap fun classic daily!
Love the car - sad to see the state it's in. Btw - the gearbox is meant to be in reverse before the ignition key is removed. I would fix the MOT issues and see how it goes for awhile. It may grow on you.
About a year ago I acquired a 94 9000 aero. Overall in pretty good shape, minimal rust, records, etc.. The head gasket blew a few months ago, so I decided to go all in. Don't give up, #saveSAAB.

That Saab Convertible is actually in good condition, i don't know what some people expect out of a 30 yr old car with no maintenance
Keep it and build it back overtime that’s what I’m doing. It may take me another 18 months to fully complete mine
it looks like you got a good deal on that - its unseen rust that kills these off as they were worth very little for a long time so a rusted transmission tunnel made them beyond economical repair.. if all you've found structurally is the boot floor then you've got a great platform.
the heater - they're vacuum controlled so check for a loose rubber pipe behind the fascia
windows - if its been sitting in the damp, it could be as simple as corrosion in the switch - it comes out and apart quite easily - you may find furry contacts that a of a rub down will fix. if its the motor, they're not particularly expensive
gearbox does sound like it needs a rebuild but if the forward gears are ok then its not not going to be ruinously costly - or just live with it
or break it and sell me the turbo badges to me!

Save this SAAB!!!! Spend the money!!!!! The design is classic to the nth degree! Here in Pennsylvania I own one in red with tan interior. Mine, though, is an automatic. Nay the less, I love her!!
The reverse problem is a really easy fix, Take the access panel of the side of the transmission and and flip the reverse arm over . your Saab mechanic should know that. No parts needed only an hour labor.
I always called Saab's 'dodgems'. I mean just look at it, it only needs a pole up the back and a little triangle flag to be perfect!

Isn't Saab the same company as Scania? First thing I thought of when you mentioned the offset pedals as my late Dad was a trucker and he and his fellow truckers always called the Scanias 'nut nippers' as driving them wasn't very comfy for their testicles due to the way they'd sit because of the offset pedals.

I have a red turbo convertible. Had it now for 10 years and gradually doing it up . They do have a certain cachet as they are so weird yet so well built . I would hang on to it if you have the room . You can quite easily uprate yours to a turbo , afterall you do have the bonnet already. I think you will regret it if you sell now.
This is nothing in the rest department compared to New England Winters. Seriously this car is fine by contrast.
