All I do is to get the size stainless nut and corresponding bolt - assemble and lock the nut with either another of the same size, or a hex coupler - put in a vice mounted drill and then work handheld with a fine zirconium flap disc on a mini grinder. The softness of the pad allows you to work it relatively easily to a bevel. Once you've got the finished outer profile it's then a case of polishing from 180 through to 4K grit wet and dry; then you can vice mount and drill/ream the inner. Get a rod and wrap with wet and dry or emery and work the inside accordingly. All in all, about 30 mins work. Hope this helps.
Just wanted to say thank you. I couldn't find the perfect ring from any store. I'm getting married and I need to find that special ring that you "Try" to keep forever. I watched your video and knew this was for me. I made one ring on the first try it came out amazing! I went 120 - 3000 Sand paper. The last few 2500 - 3000 made a huge difference. I also used a table grinder to slim down the ring (Along with a belt sander). Saved me hours of work that way. Wish I could show you a picture. Thank you. - Timothy Brown
Starting on one for me and one for the wife this weekend! Though I do have the added advantage of a drill press and will just drill out the threads, then cover a bit with tape to hold the ring and work the light sanding and polishing using the drill press... Thank you for the great idea! Tremendous job!
Excellent tutorial. I'm pretty excited to try this one. Perfect gift for my father. Also like how you explain the tools and other options. Good to know I can use my other tools without all the big fancy whatnots.
You're an amazing friend to put so much work and effort into making the ring the shiniest (mirror-est?) possible. And, then, to put the extra work into making an equally specially-unique presentation box as well. My dad made me a ring like the first one you showed, before he died. He ended up having to make a gap in the middle of the ring, in order for it to fit my ring finger. I still have it and cherish it.You'r video helped me to appreciate the effort he put into my ring. Thank you for that.
Hey Andrew, awesome video! I’ve watched several of your ring vids, could you do one using only tools such as the drill and dremel? A tutorial using only those two tools? Thank you for the awesome content.
This is an awesome tutorial. I've made many rings from coins, and I would like to try this too. I have to say though, you digress.......a lot. People who watch "how to" videos like the instructions without change of subject. Tips can be saved for the end.
I love the way yoy show ways so that everyone can do it. Not everyone has the same options as you of course. So great job man! I would be fun to see you dot it out of a rusted nut btw.:)
Great job ! I watched your other ring vid a while back. Just interesting watching. Theres something about wearing a ring like that you made that makes it a priceless piece in your own mind. Great something to do one boring afternoon. Just think of all the people sitting on the couch when they could be out in the shop/garage making a piece like this. It sure polished into a amazing shine. Impressive ! Need to stamp something around one. A lord of the rings type of stamping all the way around. Cheers
Awesome job. Turned out really nice. Just as good 👍 as a store bought but only better. Whoever you give it to will appreciate it more because you made it. Anyone can just buy one. How many ordinary people can make one though? Thanks to you, I'm going to give it a try. Take care my friend.
To make the nuts round is easier if you start with it before removing the inner part. Put 2 nuts into a fitting screw, locking them to each other. Put the screw in a drill, you can use a vise or press to lock the drill, turn it on and use a file to round the nuts.
I made 2 rings with your tutorial and had a couple of grey spots developing on the polished surface on the rings after couple of weeks (it is not dirt. Tried to scrub it off vigorously). Just wanted to ask for a cause (material, moisture, insufficient heat treating or any other possible cause) or should I just ignore it and try to polish it again. I'm new to this metalworking bussines so naturally I have no clue.
Very nice you should be very happy with your workmanship. I made my wife's and my wedding rings 33 years ago out of monel nuts. Back then all I could do is drill them out to the basic size and used rifle files and cut a diamond shape on the top with a similar style to your first ring.
You seem to be having alot of fun... And I know it's a hobby, and you're not in a hurry.. but: if you were to take and leave removing the "threads" till the last or close to the last step, you could use a a long bolt and "jamnut" configuration to hold the work piece... By doing that, you could not only increase the speed of manufacture, but the overall finish and craftsmanship of the work.. By holding firmly, securely, your accuracy would improve dramatically... Try it once or twice... You'll be amazed... Once the part is near completion, remove the theads, and polish... You're done..!!
What is the simplest way to figure out what size nut to get ? My fiancee is a 14.5 and when I looked up specifics on that size I got 2.895" / 73.5mm. What size nut do I use? Any help is appreciated.
I’ve seen in the comments that a lot of people have asked for the size of the nuts to use. I’d also like to know. I’ll either have to order online or ask someone to go and get them for me. It makes it very hard if I don’t know what size to tell them to get or what to order. Please tell us the best size/sizes to use. Thanks for a great tutorial
My husband wears a size 21 ring. It's incredibly hard, if not impossible, to find a ring that will fit him. What size nut do you think I would need to make a ring that size?
nice ring and video. honestly though you don't need to use a dozen different kinds of sanding grits for one ring. choose a basic coarse grit, a medium and a finishing grit. this will save you money and time. but again, nice work.
I made a brass ring for my wife before we got married just as a one off for a dirty weekend in London. Her finger did go green but it soon cleaned up.Back in the late 60s dirty weekends were not on.
i would totally use my 2x72 belt grinder. to round the edges you could totally use a lathe. thats what im totally going to do. you should totally turn on the heat so you can wet sand. totally should round the inside edges too so it would be more comfortable.
U could without depending on what the nut is made out of and if u don't have a touch just have a camp fire throw it in and when ur done or after a few mins take it out and let it sit and cool tell completely cool don't put it in water that will garden it
hey you can buy a low profile nut,,,, it's caller a JAM NUT ? A jam nut is a low profile type of nut, typically half as tall as a standard nut. It is commonly used as a type of locknut, where it is "jammed" up against a standard nut to lock the two in place. It is also used in situations where a standard nut would not fit. Ed
Our Chief Engineer, on last ship, used to howl about how dangerous soft wedding rings were in the engine rooms. Our MR (machinery repairman) would take grade 8 nuts and turn them like this.

My husband suggested that you use a lapel microphone so that the machine noises do not drown out your narrative. Gorgeous ring. 😎

super elegant, smooth, very symmetrical, shiny ,so precious....My Precious!
Very nice ring Andrew W. Thanks for sharing an alternate use for a basic hardware hex nut. A+ on your presentation skills and instructions.
Excellent tutorial. I'm pretty excited to try this one. Perfect gift for my father. Also like how you explain the tools and other options. Good to know I can use my other tools without all the big fancy whatnots.
this guy made two rings!! he must be nuts
Nice work! I lost my wedding band a few years ago, and now I know how to make my own. Thanks!

Yes u could u would just need a ring to match the whole size
Yup
Very well made video tutorial Sir, I thoroughly enjoyed it and love how many alternative tool options you gave throughout.

That was absolutely amazing. I plan on trying to make one with some channel set crushed amethyst. But you gave me a great idea. Thanks a lot.
Wow! It's beautiful...and that wooden box!!

Thanks for sharing, this is an excellent tutorial. I'm wondering if you can use brass nuts and use the same process shown here?
Gavin Pili I couldn't see it being much of a different process Just brass instead of stainless
Gavin Pili I think brass would turn your finger green after a while for oxidation, not sure though
Gavin Pili You might want to wipe it down with finger nail polish remover so that you can get all of the excess factory finish .
awesome job Andrew
Thanks!

Nice!! This is a great easy project for anyone who has an interest in making jewellery..

Is there a better way to secure the ring to the drill when your smoothing the outside?
Interesting vids …. Does the polishing process prevent rusting on non stainless steel nut rings ?
Did a fine job on that !! Think I'm gonna give it a try 👍
Ha! Drill on the belt grinder.... love it

Thanx for all the awesome tips. Great video
If I were to use a Galvanized nut would I still take a blow torch to it? I'm not entirely sure what that does but it seems important.
I know you showed a Zinc nut at the beginning. Will this process work with a zinc nut instead of a stainless steel nut?
How can I order this
really cool video. the ring and box are awsome
I would be proud too.
Oh my god, this is bloody genius....YOU are a bloody GENIUS. thanks for putting this up...I'm SO goin to try this. X
Very nice
Good job and well worth the time.
Can I find the stainless steel nuts that you used to make your ring at lows
That's awesome... What size are those nuts?
absolutely brilliant
Thx for explanation. .clearly !
Nice ring...
totally cool, nice ring.....
Do you have to heat the the steel before working it?
How do you keep the ring from turning your finger green
I would love one of these rings but have basicly none of these tools... would you or do you sell them?
You inspire me brother
Very good tutorial. Thank you
Can you make a ring just using File/Sandpaper?
Great job one question when you grind down the inside how do you keep it from getting out of round
I put a handheld angle grinder in my Vice to do my grinding
Podrías darme el espesor necesario con la rosca atornillada a algo. Después quitarle la rosca. Ahorrarias tiempo.
Nice video, what grit sand paper do you use on the belt sander?
Can the metal detector in the airport detect those?
Are you gonna take it off every time you go to airport security?
do you sell them ring to Mike
What kind of sand paper and polish do you use?
TO COOL THE NUT DOWN CAN U PLACE IT IN ICY WATER?TY 4 SHARING THIS VID W/US
Dunking it in water will harden it. To anneal, you want to cool it slowly. He should have put it in some sand to cool.
Oh ok ty 4 responding back yeah this is really an awesome idea
So I made one of these and I’m worried if it will rust, i used a stainless steel nut and I get mixed answers
Very cool idea good job and some of the comments are hilarious
Thanks for posting this, the ring and the box both look great! I was wondering, did you temper the ring again, after you finished shaping it?
WOW. Great job! where did you pick up the hardwood for the box?
when you put the ring in the drill, did you drill in the same direction as the sander was going or not?
Kyle Hagerty no you might ruin your drill that way, spin the opposite direction
What size nut did you use
Just awesome. Cheers! Chris.
How long does it take to do
How long did this take you?

How can i make it not smalls bad ?
I made a brass ring for my wife before we got married just as a one off for a dirty weekend in London. Her finger did go green but it soon cleaned up.Back in the late 60s dirty weekends were not on.

Can I use a dremel???
i would totally use my 2x72 belt grinder. to round the edges you could totally use a lathe. thats what im totally going to do. you should totally turn on the heat so you can wet sand. totally should round the inside edges too so it would be more comfortable.
I think that about totals things up!

Brilliant, thanks for the idea.
Will mild steel turn your finger green?
Brad Bywater no, copper does that, but mild steel can rust turning your finger brown.
Use a drill bit just under the correct size you want. Takes about 20 seconds.
good job
