Thanks so much for putting this together! Love seeing the video of Ryan at work and I am super jealous of being able to touch history like that. Any chance we might get a 45 rpm re-master from the original three track?

Absolutely fascinating! What a treasure trove of audio history! If I remember correctly, AME equalization was used quite a bit on Ampex 300-3 recordings. There seems to be a period from about 1961-1964 where many recordings made on the Ampex 300-3 had a blistering, ear-splitting top-end, and I suspect that AME equalization is the culprit. I do confess, however, that I do love that sound, though! Such crisp, crackly character not heard in today's recordings!

Ryan's answer to Chad when asked if there were many edits in the 3-Channel tape: "Oh yeah, totally! Those guys, they were fearless, man!" lol RKS speaks the truth :)

This is an excellent video! Thing I'm concerned was the storage of tape in sealed tins where the acetate stock needs to breathe, or you can get Vinegar Syndrome due to the breakdown of the acetate stock releasing acetic acid.
Were these sealed tapes affected by VS?

Why mix down to 1/2 inch when the reissue tapes are 1/4 inch stereo ? So i take it then the reissue tapes are third generation tapes. Talking to Bernie Grundmen he feels 1/4 inch sounds better than 1/2 inch, which surprised me but thats his opinion. Claims more natural and musical.

After listening to the results of his work on their SACD's, it was really cool to see the process.
Honestly, I was kind of cringing when he was demonstrating the 3 channels separately. I mean, these are old tapes are are irreplaceable. I would have thought they would try to play them as little as possible to avoid wear.

too bad this line of work is taking a toll on his back/shoulder or so it seems.
