In the Manga, there was a timer placed on the bottom of specific pages for us to know when exactly everything was happening, and so the Manga presented scenes out of chronological order because the audience could tell when each one was happening relative to one another, but the Anime decided to go for the fully chronological approach here. This episode takes the span of just about 4 seconds from start to finish (not counting the time of Netero and Meruem speaking towards the end, which took an unspecified amount of time less than 14 seconds).

Meruem would never do that though. with Komugi in the room he would never even attempt any violence. but of course Zeno and Netero don't know to what extent he is more human than human at this point.
or should i say Meruem is more enlightened than the most enlightened human of this world. there are so many other animal species who are more civilized, self sacrifice and selfless than the humans. the ants in nature (not in HxH) is extremely civilized.

      @@tng2022 (SPOILERS FOR THIS ARC)
I'm not entirely sure if he would never do that, I mean, he actively was violent towards his guards and cut his own arm with Komugi around, granted he already has changed a lot from that moment so if I had to bet I would probably agree with you.
But I do think you got to an interesting point, Meruem is definitely extremely smart and developed really quickly a very strong emotional intelligence, in fact he went from simply incredibly smart and strong to an all around wise and strong individual *but...* I don't really think "the most enlightened" would be the right way to describe him.
The story very explicitly states that imo when Netero died, with the quite iconic phrase of "Meruem, king of ants, you understand nothing… of humanity's infinite potential for evolution!" with evolution also read as malice, cause the double meaning still means that both are true reads of the phrase, yes humanity's malice is truly infinite and that's something very far from an enlightened being, but it's also true that humanity's potential for evolution is infinite, and I think that it's through that potential *how* a being can reach something along the lines of an "enlightenment", but that's something that is quite explicitly stated as what the ants lacked, cause that's what "Meruem didn't understand". The human in the ants was to a high degree the cause of their doom, cause their individualism destroyed the strength in numbers that they had, the hivemind-like way in which ants live (basically what you call more civilized, self sacrifice and selfless than humanity) that is way stronger than in human societies, but the Ants in HxH were also not human enough to completely separate themselves from that "ant civilization", their own desires were still second to the Kings, especially the guards that were _almost_ deprived of having their own goals and were fully loyal to the King, but even regular ants weren't too different and would probably obey him without question if he directly ordered them (hence why even a "newborn" ant like Palm still couldn't bear the sight of the King kneeling before anyone), a lot of them completely lacked goals, dreams, desires and if they had them they hardly had enough will to actively pursue them (hence why a lot of ants even end up going back to serving the King after trying to be Kings themselves), even Meruem himself didn't really have any goal of his own until Komugi, he was doing things his own way but his "goal" was still what his species instincts dictated.
Humans instead are completely different in that regard, our selfishness and desires can be problematic but can also the strongest engine ever and push us to our goals to the ultimate end... or die trying as millions of people have throughout history. Imo, I think that an enlightened being needs to find balance in both, someone selfless capable of playing completely in tune with civilization, but also someone strong willed and assertive, capable of going against the current when needed, someone capable of both following and leading by choice.

      @@Iqnacio. SPOILERS:
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
everything you say is lovely, well based on your ideas of what an enlightened being is - balanced and all, Meruem is just that. his fate is to be a King, he has purposes and duty,
but his destiny of how he lives and how he dies is entirely by choice.
the most sophisticated being choose how to live and how to die in their own terms. that's enlightenment.
In the end he doesn't care about fate, duty, power
      - he chose what he wants to do, to be, he chooses what he is.
Komugi to me is also the most enlightened creature that all living creatures has to offer.
she is exceptionally talented, dedicated, noble, pure, innocent, strong, delicate, tender.
everything beautiful and romantic is Komugi.
and so is Meruem at the end. he chooses what he is, he chooses to use his exquisite emotions and his godly intelligence in the ways he wants.
not to serve anybody, not for any grand ambitions, but only for self-fulfilling reasons. all peaceful, tender, noble, romantic.
an individual with free will and complete independence - is enlightened.
maybe Netero could have been in that category. but Netero is still stuck with duty and responsibilities. he could not make his own unbiased decisions.
he could not follow his heart 200 percents of the times. he stood for the humans and his species, his duty is to defend and protect.
therefore his free-will is not absolute and untainted.
Meruem and Komugi chose to live this life dealing with the battles within their hearts. it's not about this species or that species. there is no war, no ego, pride, only love and game, and they follow their hearts until the end.
and their hearts are pure. they just want to improve their skills in what they excel at, they just want a playmate for their passion.
that is my definition of being enlightened. i guess we all have different ideas and notions of what it means to be the most enlightened.

The choice to black out Meruem's face in that scene is so fascinating. Since you are looking that scene from Pitou's PoV, they are unable to properly decipher what the king's expression ment, since at that moment, Pitou was only understanding the human side of their nature.
This also allows the viewer to fill the blank with whatever they think they king's face may have been like, but it's heavily hinted to have been one of complete distraught: he was shocked, angry and profoundly saddened at the possible loss of his human companion, but cooled off really fast once his medic arrived.

Youpi lacking self preservation means he doesn't have any ego or selfishness typical of humans. He was born for a purpose and he evolves based on how the circumstances affecting that purpose. He's selfless and that makes him so strong. No personal agenda makes him pure. Youpi is the most simple out of the three but he is the most adaptive, versatile, elastic. His physical abilities are manifested based on his emotions and needs. He transforms internally and externally based on circumstances. from a biologist standpoint, Youpi and Pouf are the 2 most fascinating and enchanting character studies for me. Of course Meruem is so organic and stunning, but i love his guards. when they are in pain, i'm terribly sad too. Togashi draws and made them with a lot of hearts, like how you admire and marvel at a shark just for him to devour you, but you must admit that they are godly creatures. 😢

a lot of it is info-dumping. there's also a lot of restating what is already shown. The problem is that Togashi was dealing with health issues when making this arc so the art was basically sketches. It was missing a lot of crucial detail so he resorted to exposition to describe the scenes because he wasn't healthy enough to draw them. Anime should have taken some liberties here and cut down on the narrator cause there's no way this was Togashi's original intention.

Everytime I see this scene where Pitou cries, I cry. Not because I feel for the ant, but because of the immense amount of emotion the king is displaying for Komugi, to go as far as verbally stating he is counting on someone else to help him. The king, who just a few scenes ago was seemingly uninterested in his royal guard and decided he stands alone in this world, now needed the help of his useless royal guard and the bridge for this connection was his love for a human life. Its so fucking good.

A lot of this arc is developed from whats happening in their minds; from the moment Kite found Pitou, the characters start to slowly drive away from each other - and themselves - and talking less about the situation. You can see that both Gon and Killua are dealing with their struggles inside, so is the King, so the narrator is more than an artistic choice to give that 'literary vibe', but a tool to connect those unsaid emotions altogether to us as audience. Without him, we'd depend on dialogues and action, but the characters are all very introspective, focused and tense in this specific moment. I think that the choice of using a narrator is also a clever way to convey that silence and that this arc is more about what is inside them.

Komugi sta salvando il mondo mostrando al re cosa sia l'amore e la gentilezza. E il re, che è nato da poco, sta imparando da lei le emozioni dolci e positive che prima non aveva mai provato. I think I know exactly who you're talking about aha. The fact is the narrator was as important a character to this arc as Komugi and the King.
The worst perhaps 'valid criticisms' against it's use is sometimes he can come across as redundant as we're somtines shown and told; but Removing or making his presence lesser would be a net negative for the arc and it just wouldn't work.
Especially in these last two episodes (111 and 112). There's even a moment where Zeno temporarily takes over the roll of the narrator because the fight between Netero and the King starts long before they actually start fighting. (Zeno explaining how quiet Neteros aura is and how no one can predict his moves is important info for the fight.) The narrator doesn't tell us that; he just says a monster was born when netero came down from the mountains. Then in 112 he says the King also was a monster.
And then we get to the actual fight which to this day is the greatest fight I've ever seen thematically and it's all because of the narrator really. It's insanely good. Beyond that.

If you don't know very much the manga and especially shonen manga. Let me explain the last scene. The king walks between Netero and Zeno with ease. This scene is classic for a manga like that. For example, in dragon ball Z, Goku walks between Vegeta and Nappa to check if Piccolo is good. In One piece, Luffy walks between Big Mom and Kaido to check if Kinemon is alive. It is not a kind of scene you see often but it is an iconic one. A scene where the hero seems confidents enough to walk between two powerful ennemies because he needs to do something important. This kind of scene is always before an important big and epic fight because the hero sees how badly his/her friends is bad and wants to settle the battle with determination.
Now, here is the interessant part, the last scene of this episode is a variation of the walking scene. It is not the hero who walks between two big villains but the King who is walking between two powerful allies. It makes wonder the watchers : "Is he the bad guy ?". Seems not since it's the good guys who hurt Komugi. Did he walk to check if Komugi is safe ? No, he already told Pitou to heal her. He is leaving the place firmly and calmy. Netero and Zeno looks like the bad guys but also like very weak. Will the fight would be this important ?
The variation of the walking scene tells us many things about Hunter x Hunter and this arc : It would not be like a classical shonen manga.
Ps: sorry for my english, I am French.

It's actually a callback to the Hunter exam scene where Netero walked past Killua and Gon surprising them. A lot of Netero scenes in this arc are a callback to his scenes in hunter exam, representing the calling of karma, a running theme in the arc.

One of the great things about Togashi's writing is that it not only makes you have empathy for the villains, but it reaches a level that rather than worrying about them you forget that they are evil, same with the troupe. And is also something he does with the protagonists, but in a different way and more complex in my opinion, but I don't want to spoil.

Many times, writers would opt in for the show and dont tell method of storytelling... One thing that this arc features, that seldom other stories do, is to show AND tell for it's method of storytelling. It's a novelty that many respectable authors would usher a writer against. However, Togashi expertly weaves showing and telling in a way that transforms this section of the story to be beyond the typical man vs animal vs nature type of narrative troupe. With the resulting product, being more akin to a documentary of the human/ animal condition under imense psychological stress. It's endlessly fascinating to me since it genuinely feels like the reader/ watcher has absolutely no bearings on what may potentially happen. Similarly to the characters since the narration takes some perceived agency away from them. Forcing their every move to be the result of pure instinct and intellect.
It's such a rare sight to see from a manga author, I cant help but endlessly praise this decision lol

    • @davyespectador
      @davyespectador 4 місяці тому +2

One of the reason this works is because the "telling" is coming from an unbiased all-knowing narrator, who can give us details that the characters can't/won't. The One Punch Man manga also does this really well in the Saitama vs Garou fight, the narrator there can give us info none of the characters know.

29:28 I agree and disagree 😅yes Gon is hyperfocused on his mission (his eyes here are showing the focus, they're different from the black ones he had earlier and when he attacked Morel) but not to the point where he would ignore his comrades : until a few seconds ago he was still worried about Palm and here he was ready to delay his fight with Pitou to take on Knuckle's mission, so he's still aware of his surroundings, imo he just knows that sooner or later he'll get to Pitou so if Shoot went for Pitou first he would catch up with him as soon as he can leave Youpi to someone else or defeat him himself (or die trying😌) Also it's not the first time that Gon is thinking faster than everyone else it happened with Razor for ex : when he's in the zone it's like everything is clear and he knows instinctively what to do

I'm sorry if the sentences are not what I intended because I used Google Translate. I'm Japanese. This wonderful Chimera Ant arc was written while the author, Togashi, was taking a break due to mental illness. Therefore, Hunter x Hunter is still not complete, and the anime ended in a forced manner. It is no exaggeration to say that the quality of a work is determined by the conclusion of the story, but I want you to know that Hunter x Hunter is an exception.
