It would be interesting to know which missionaries Horomona is referring to. History shows that it was the Crown through their legislation that saw the loss of Taonga Pūoro and many other customary Māori practices and Māori arts. Our Māori prophets who were Christian never taught that but they did utilise the western instruments same as our tupuna utilised all modern tools, concepts, machinery, clothing, modes of transport. These were the results of colonisation not christianity. However it would be interesting to know which missionaries taught that playing Taonga Puoro wasn’t right.
