- Qantas is conducting research into what it calls 'Project Sunrise', the capability to fly non-stop from Sydney and Melbourne to London Heathrow and New York JFK. The first of these flights involved the delivery of Qantas' 9th 787 Dreamliner named 'Kookaburra', delivered two years after Qantas' first Dreamliner VH-ZNA 'Great Southern Land'.
Here we see the aircraft complete its 19.25 hour flight direct from New York JFK with 50 passengers and crew onboard.
The next of these research flights will deliver Qantas' 10th Dreamliner direct from London Heathrow some time in November.
On a side note, this is the third Qantas 787 delivery flight I've been out to witness following ZNA 'Great Southern Land' and ZND 'Emily Kame Kngwarreye'.

Fantastic that you were able to catch this flight! Was wondering who would be out and about for it. Landed on the perfect morning too!
Thanks man! Yeh, I had enough time to head out for this before my daughter's swimming lessons hahahah. Great weather and trying this location for a Rwy 16R arrival was new for me :)
Big moment in commercial aviation. Thanks for being there.
Quite big, hopefully Qantas will follow through on all this publicity!
BOEING and GE going the distance for Qantas !!!
quite a historic moment indeed..!
Absolutely. Next one in November will be LHR-SYD!
I live at the other end of the route, and I was tracking the flight from the moment it flew over my head. It actually overtook the A380 into SYD about 2 hours before.
Congratulations Qantas & a wonder achievement direct flight from New York
Really fantastic to see the arrival of this special flight! It is truly a technological miracle that an airplane can fly for more than 19 hours nonstop. Amazing! Thank you for sharing this historic moment with us! Greetings from Canada! 👋😀
It's an amazing world and time we live in and it will be interesting to see whether QF really do go ahead with this now. Some final hurdles in the way and a final decision by March next year will let us all know - in the mean time, I guess I'll start saving for a ticket to London on one of their A350's if they do make it happen haha.
Their third and last research flight (also flying JFK-SYD) should be touching down today some time... sadly I'll be at work for this one.
VH-ZNI, Qantas 9th 787-9 Dreamliner. I predict their 10th Dreamliner VH-ZNJ will conduct the nonstop Project Sunrise London-Sydney test flight.
Yep, that's pretty much what we're expecting here as well - next month some time :)
Great catch mate!
Cheers mate! Had the opportunity to head out and get it for a change :)
Amazing footage!
Cheers mate. Great conditions for this historic landing.
