Thank you. I'm years late to the Wellerman, and sea shanties at all. I love that song and honestly love the idea of shanties!! I was a choir kid and love singing in unison. Now on to learn more! 😊
Thank you for making this video. I teach a sea shanty unit to start the year every year for my 5th graders and they love it. I always show this video to them as we get started. It's such a great, concise explanation with beautiful images and clips. Again, thank you so much!!!
Okay, this i like. Showing there was a practical use for the singing. The idea of timing, teamwork, unison, a rhythm to help perform task on a timed intervals so the job can be done correctly. This is what makes it beautiful when learning that the technicalities have practicality behind it. Also, many are fun to sing
Wasnt there also the Outward-Homeward bound Shanties? I.e, you wouldn't sing a Homeward Bound on an Outward bound voyage. I think I heard it from another documentary on here but can't quite remember
I believe ur history certainly has more history as far as sea shantys an sailing but I must admit as someone who is irish an Cherokee Indian something inside me feels awakened when I hear certain shantys it's like hearing ur favorite song from 15 years ago an although u haven't heard it in 12 u feel compelled to sing an dance or move instinctively as soon as it begins its kind of amazing an I love it
The Sea Shanty lasted well into the 1920's in the UK.My grandfather was on sailing trawlers out of GRIMSBY, Lincolnshire in 1921 as a 14 year old. Twin masted vessels that survived the arrival of steam by 60+ years.
I imagine shanties had 3 purposes, Keeping a rhythm, like fo rasing anchor, and just getting tasks done Distraction, life at sea wasn’t very good so any distraction would have been welcomed Fun, think about singing with a group of friends at a table, it’s one of the most fun experiences you can’t have
Which is really the very last place I think anyone would have expected something so characteristic of the state of world 200 years ago to have resurfaced. Also amazing that it spoke to people so profoundly to the point of going absolutely viral and charting in the UK

Same ! I too came from the Wellerman to know about sea shanties

Sea Shantys...The reason why you play Assassins' Creed Black Flag
Exactly!! There needs to be more pirate games like that.
True
Thanks Chris - really good info - I learned a lot! cheers from Wellington
Welcome Joe. Glad you enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun making this one. :)
@@FamilyCircusadventures sea shanties are a lot older than 150 years. That's so absurd to claim that's when their origin is.
Sea shanty probably took their mind off the labor and motivated them
Thank you giving us the history of sea shanty
Great video and footage, where did you get the resources for making this? Amazing
Thanks for this! Makes perfect sense now!
Wasnt there also the Outward-Homeward bound Shanties? I.e, you wouldn't sing a Homeward Bound on an Outward bound voyage. I think I heard it from another documentary on here but can't quite remember
I would expect there to be many variations on the tradition
Yes......... and it was considered bad luck by sailors to sing a Homeward Bound shanty while heading outward and vice versa.
Ohh so it's used economize! Thanks I got super confused.
Being American and hearing a sea shanty truely makes me think of my British Heritage.
They are so cool aren't they!! I can't get enough of them. :)

Not to burst your bubble, but Sea Chanties are an American tradition, adopted by other cultures.
@@alpharius_nox sorry tk burst your bubble but Sea Shanties date back to 1400s with what available knowledge we have, America didnt even exist then.
Hey I know this was made 5 years ago but do you think you could provide a link for that version of south Australia?
I imagine shanties had 3 purposes,
Keeping a rhythm, like fo rasing anchor, and just getting tasks done
Distraction, life at sea wasn’t very good so any distraction would have been welcomed

I’m watching this cause of my music strike day work
Those 11 dislikes are the marines that hate pirates
nice video
Thank you. This one was a real pleasure to make. Thanks for watching.
Yay oh how much I love watching this just so I know the ans to my hw 😑🙄
No offence ❤️
A shantier or lead singer would get double pay as they kept crews going and was first used in royal navy and supply ships around 1700s
I could not watch it very well because.yes I was at camp lol
And here these days TikTok revived them

I wonder why rock 'n' roll was developed.
I think the best sea shanty is The Dead Horse
how does it go?
Humans are the same.. so all sea workers had call and response 🇬🇭
Oh so its a cadence?
The music choices here are infuriating
Why
Noo is not like this lolol
How so?
