Great explanation. I was so confused by this when I first started lettering. Now I swear by the 32 paper. It also works really well for printables for scrapbooking or junk journaling, which is something I combine with lettering. Mixing it with cardstock in a junk journal provides great texture variety & makes the whole thing brush pen friendly.
If only the watercolour artists would learn this precious lesson; watercolour paper today is often rougher than 100 years ago, and it kills expensive fine hair brushes quite quickly.
Thanks for this video.Your timing was very lucky for me. I found this video after a web search led me to your blog. The site I was trying to buy the oft-touted HP 32-lb. paper from was out but had Xerox 32-lb. paper. After seeing this video, I ordered the Xerox. Unlucky for numerous people, however, was that the delivery truck broke down. I hope to get the paper soon (and that nothing more urgent for someone else was on that truck). My tracing paper was delivered separately. It's not one of the brands you listed on your blog, but it's also 25 lb. like those and seems smooth to the touch. Now I can use my Rhodia less, and I have an expert suggestion for card stock in the future. Thanks again.
Amanda, are you advising to use one of these papers when you use the Tombows for lettering, or also for coloring? I do a lot of times make a copy of a page from a coloring book to a certain paper, depending what medium I’m using. I was thinking to use watercolor paper for the Tombows, but even the hot press I don’t think it’s smooth enough. This is very good information, I don’t do lettering, just coloring.
Can you please please do a review on the sakura pigma gelly roll neons and the glitter ones? Pretty please! I wanna buy them but can't find an honest review like yours!😊
Hobby Lobby has a marker pad $12 for 100 pages and the pages are perforated. I use it to practice or doodle with my markers. The Tombow dual brush pens won’t bleed, but the ABT Pro alcohol based markers will. When Hobby Lobby has a sale or 40% off coupon, then well, it’s hard not to go crazy there.
Thanks so much for this important information! 🙏🏻💞💖 This video needs more attention. I’m surprised not many people are mentioning this, so I will absolutely be sharing this information to my fellow lettering friends! . Hope you won’t mind me using your video as a reference on tik tok 😅 I’m translating it to my friends, recommending the Paper One’s Digital paper (more accessible in where I’m living) along with tracing paper, which are both used for copperplate script.
For me too! I'm looking at the paper one's digital paper, and it runs about 4.8 dollars where I live (I'll get mine on shopee, because all the paper they sell here is the bright green trashy paper). How much will it cost you?
Hey Amanda! I have always used HP Premium 32! its really smooth! personally, I don't think its changed, and its much cheaper compared to the Xerox paper!!!
What if we have to use these brush pens for painting landscapes....kindly guide me as early as possible. Bcz I am wondering on Internet for answer since morning..
Thank you, I hope I can find them without 25 dollar shipping. Next to good paper and good brush pens, what are 'must haves' for a beginner in brushlettering?
Great!! I have 4 brushes I ruined on bad paper so I'll get new ones. And I don't have the paper jet, so I'm doing the basic strokes with normal pens and also trying to make a better normal handwriting to get more pen control. Your videos are very helpful!!
Hello Amanda! I've been looking around for paper options that seem good but can't find any of the ones you mention. I have to say that I live in a country where no one besides high school girls seem to care about stationery, so it's hard for me to buy stuff. I found the Paper One Digital that runs about $4.8 for 500 pages, and it looks quite good. I head another person recommend the paper, so I think I'll try it out. However, of the same brand there is Paper One Copier, which is loads cheaper for my (very) limited budget of a person who doesn't work. I don't know if you've used it before, but please look it up and tell me what you think, this would help me greatly. Thanks, Bi.
Hi Bi! Unfortunately I don't have experience with any Paper One paper. But the good news is that no matter what paper you use, the same rules apply - you want smooth processed paper, with as little roughness as possible (but not laminated). This will usually be in the higher-end of a paper company's range. xo
@@AmandaArneill I did a little more research and found that the paper I am using is 140ml/min and the paper one is 60-80ml/min (according to the bendtsen test). I think that's worth it.
Hey I have a notebook that is meant for fountain pens (the brand is fabriano) I was wondering if it’s okay to use that for your brush pens as that’s what I’ve been doing.
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with this brand, but if the paper checks the boxes that I mention in this video, including being smoothly processed (going through the press twice, flattening the fibers and not coated or laminated to mimic smoothness) then it's probably fine to use
I'm from the UK and want to find a smooth printer paper like the hp premium 32 I dont really want to use notepads I just want loose paper and alot of it to practice on so if anyone knows any UK smooth printer paper please reply !
I would really love to try out this Xerox printing paper, but for a European it seems to be impossible to get this... :( however, nice video, Amanda! I 've just subscribed to you :)
I found a card stock that has one side smooth , it gives a little shine when held under light . Is this right card stock? It is a different local company as Superfine company is not available here.
Since the smoothest paper is produced by going through the paper presses twice, having one side of the paper being smoother than the other isn't the best sign of a good paper to use with brush pens. A shiny surface on one side could indicate that it has been treated with a coating that could cause your brush pens to smear and not soak into the paper like they should
Great question! You can use whatever paper you want, but it's just a matter of what is best for your brush pens and helping them not fray before their time. Watercolor paper is rough so you can use it but it won't be "kind" to your brush pens. Hope that helps!
Unfortunately I can only comment on the products in my area, but I'm sure there are some great artists from India who have reviews of products available to you!

Thank you! This was very informative. I never realized how hard printer paper was on those felt tip pens.
That was really well done and informative. Thanks

I ruined so many pens when I first started because I was using regular paper 🤦🏻♀️ paper is so important 💕💕
What pencil do you recommend to use first and then erase with which eraser? Thanks for all your responses.

Next to good paper and good brush pens, what are 'must haves' for a beginner in brushlettering?
That's it! Once you have the foundational supplies of paper and pen - the most important thing is getting proper technique and practicing a lot! xo
