  • Recently something happened in my own dog training that I’m sharing in this episode, and it’s all about our expectations of our dogs. Along with our expectations, our beliefs and biases play a role in our relationship with our dogs. We’re all bombarded with unrealistic expectations about dogs daily, so challenging what we think with curiosity can be a fast track to dog training success. Realistic expectations will bring us closer to our dogs, and help them be less frustrated and happier.

This video for me was absolutely exceptional! And just as you said, not only in relationship to my dog, but in relationship to everyone in my life! So I learned some really important tips and will definitely be exploring my own biases hopefully on an ongoing basis. My pup is 5 months old, she's amazing, and Susan your episodes have made a tremendous difference in the way that I'm training her versus how I trained dogs in the past. God bless you so much and thank you for all that you do

Taking your recaller class, I’ve been surprised at how fast my dog learns. It’s brought us closer working with her throughout every day. It’s calmed me down and that’s made the positive difference. Her successes are not consistent yet, and I’m fine with that. My calmness is consistent. It’s a process and a fun one!

Every time I listen to one of your podcasts I am deeply disappointed when it comes to an end and the outro music comes on, because its almost like therapy hearing your wisdom on all these topics and learning how to apply it not JUST to my dogs but to everything else too. I have listened to every podcast you have ever made several times over because I just cant get enough, and Im always ready for more. Love all that you do and the generosity with which you share it. Lots of love from me and my five doggos here in China! Happy new year!

When you talk in this podcast, it reminds me of the Victor Frankel quote I think you've mentioned before on Shaped by Dog: "Between stimulus and response lies a space. In that space lie our freedom and power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and our happiness."
To train our dogs means that we hold a vision of what might one day be possible for them... but with that can come judgement, frustration and disappointment when our dog fails to meet our expectations the way we 'want' them to, or at the rate that we want them to. This is the paradox that we have to grapple with every day. But we also get to choose how we respond and every day we can choose to give our dog grace and be patient with them as they learn.
I really like that you've touched on the more subtle adverse aspects of training, such as the use of non-reward markers or changing our tone to be more overt/aggressive, because I think these things can be sub-consious, and can often get overlooked even after someone decides to make the shift to only use 'positive reinforcement' in their training. Our underlying biases can often be much harder to change - predominantly because they're subconscious!
I also love that you bring up Bob Bailey's approach to animal training as a kind of remedy for working through training problems. Watching your interview with him on youtube was one of the most pivotal shifts in my training approach, particularly in understanding the importance of building value for on foundational behaviours before increasing their complexity. It is something I am still learning to 'honor' and deliberately hold space for in my own training practice, and I am often having to remind myself to be patient, and to deliberately and slowly put the work in and not expect everything to be completed in a day. I don't get it right always, but I am learning.
I am curious... what do you think are the things that help us to overcome those unconscious aspects of our training?
Obviously, practical things such as filming our training sessions and getting feedback from trusted others can help, but is there any other things that you see as particularly important in this area?

Excellent advise. I actually do some activities in my classes to show how people have expectations of their dog and the dog is not ready. Letting the dog watch other dogs almost always the dog will go Oh I can do this!! and it does. !!

This podcast was a real eyeopener for me. I knew that my expectations for my dog weren't always appropriate, but I never thought about the possible bias. Thinking about my bias from previous dog trainers, I have a lot to "download" and delete from my thought process while training. Thank you so much for bringing this up in your podcast.

Susan, you are off to a great start in 2024 with this podcast! I need to re examine my expectations when things "go wrong. " Growing up, there were always "consequences" for mistakes. I'm sure I brought this unconscious mindset into dog training. I'd love more on this topic. Thanks again for a very thought provoking podcast. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

I like oops for me personally because it reminds me theyre like a kid, theyre doing the best they can and ultimately its for fun and for love. Oops is gentle in a way no or uh uh or whatever isnt. Oops is what you say to a child or for an accident. I try really hard to make sure my pup can succeed. I want her to have fun and to succeed and she wants to too but its always going to happen. The oops is more for me as a reminder to myself. My dog probably knows it means that wasnt the choice i wanted her to make, but theres no punishment with it, we dont usually even immediately try again, we'll go do something else and try again later.

Thank you for sharing this information. I also had +or - training base from the 80s. Then went last year to a "Dog training Club" in illinois expecting new positive methods, as you do. WRONG they were Worse than ever. Totally messed my puppy up and expected the dogs and trainers to miraculously learn Tons of stuff new to a puppy in 6 weeks. Heck it may take 6 weeks to teach 1 thing well not 10-12 things. They were AWFUL jerking dogs ect. All these old style trainers need to quit these very bad training ways and retire. POSITIVE TRAINING IS THE BEST WAY AS YOU DO. Thank you for being out here for us. We are doing So Much better now with your way than any other way. God Bless you Susan, keep your good work and training posts up! Positive vibes to you and all your dogs. Sharon.❤

@DogsThat thank you. I decided to look at it like if they weren't such jerks I'd have never gone looking for better and may have not crossed paths with Susan Garrett. I am so grateful I was led to her positive ways to train. So I've decided that it was oddly meant to be. And to positively go on from here. Thanks again. S.

This is soooo timely - I was just trying to formulate the question: "What do I do when my training fails?" For instance when I ask for a down and my dog looks at me like waaa? Some trainers say once you ask for a down the dog must do it - even if you have to pull him down. I know that is not what I want to do but how do I redirect? What is the best way to in essence say: "oops my bad, I forgot and said that in Turkish let's try...." I want to move forward in a fun way and not confuse or scare my dog.

This was really good and so true. Sometimes we don’t see it when it’s right in front of our own face.
Your puppy looks like he’s going to be a superstar and I’m so happy for you but I have a question and it’s just a question, will you be training THIS anymore? A lot of us have issues with our dogs and would love to watch you train her as a lot of us have dog similar to her that would like help with
I’m not sure if you’re gonna be training her anymore in agility as I think you stated you’re doing flyball with her maybe you can show some flyball videos when you get a minute even though I know you’re number one thing is agility. Thank you again.

Although I know to be curious when I'm furious from listening to your podcasts and enrolled in HSTD, I went back to my old self. I was more furious at myself for failing him. Susan, Susie B Free here. My wife and I just got a new German short haired pointer. She is 7 months old. She bites A lot, I was attempting to use your instructions, whelp when she bites. Over about 2min when I was trying to play on the floor with her, she grabbed my arm on my right side, I whelped . She didn’t stop. I eventually grabbed her off my arm, she wriggled around and got my other arm. Drawing blood on both arms. I need help.

@@susiefree7260 Hi Susan, I too have GSPs, my newest guy is nearly 7 months old now too. They are crazy high energy dogs and can get over stimulated quickly and start doing things like biting. I found doing the collar grab then wrapping my arm around his body holding him until he settled down made the biting part disappear quickly.
Another trick I have learned over the years of having thus breed is to do things in a much calmer manner in places I want relaxation (like in the house) I keep play slow and chilled with much more mind games rather than zoomies type things. And I do lots of long slow stroke along their bodies a few times throughout the day which really helps them to relax and not be so wound up.
Good luck with your pup, following Susan is a brilliant way to bring one up and you will be rewarded to no end with her methods. 😊

It’s so hard to escape outdated methods and the brainwash we were all exposed to often at young age. I think our frustration and punishment stems always from being angry at ourselves. And not knowing how to do it better therefore the animals is blamed 😞
