GREAT JOB...I LOVE GOING TO THE NEW YEAR...THE BEST THING EVER...And yeah...I was wondering...Who's the singer of the second song and what's the name of it...If you could tell me...That'll be great...Thanks...
i don't mean to burst in on your research but the ball toss practice was actually learnt in S.E. Asia. it was created only about 180 years ago. it's actually not practiced amongst the 9 million hmong in china. Hmong New Year actually consist of an important tree almost like a christmas tree, a huge pole/tree to climb, and walking around the tree and rope. hmong new year has really developed over time and our people have changed a lot.
I agree, the new years celebration has become a marketing machine. There should be only "one" special new year and not thousands... there's no signifance in today's new years anymore.. We've lost touch of what our ancestor's celebration of the new years truly mean...
With no one to rebuild our culture and with others manipulating it for profits, who is there left to hold everyone accountable for the identity of the Hmong Culture? If we can't even preserve our own culture, we might as well be proud to say we are not Hmong. It is critically dangerous to get too "Americanized" and not accept any pride and ownership of being a Hmong. For the American culture is the SPEAR to our Hmong hearts. Don't let it be a mistake to forget who you are and where you came from
yes, i agree that i am tired of seeing so many vendors on both sides of the fair grounds selling something, when I'd like to see more history of the Hmong culture and more interactive activities like an actual festival. Why do we stay away and look down at our culture when we don't even fully come to understand it. True that some eldars and leaders have lost their ways and become corrupt.
great slideshow.. its true.. what happened to the courtship and the fun ball tossing, and allthe above that really comes together as "hmong new year"? cant lie, but the food are good, and its a good time to buy new movies and etc but w/ that we are loosing the whole meaning of "HMONG NEWYEAR".. i've notice that the outfits are not dressed correctly, and most of the people there are not even dress in our unique dresses..
I disagree. It's not just turning into a marketing place. It's an ENGAGEMENT of bring Hmong people together. Along with everything else that comes with it.
totally disagree. this is why we call it new year celebration. of course we nee food at the new year and of course we buy stuff there, and also to people who say we have to many new year...well we're in different states right? right. this research have the right point but wrong idea...

I wonder 10 years from now, how would the Hmong New Year look and will Hmong men and women still dress in Hmong clothes??
