My Italian immigrant grandfather cruelly fed my mother her pet bunnies in the 1950's. He was abused by his father. An extraordinarily cruel thing to do. Josh does seem like a good dude! Full of love and understanding. His father's generation is full of cruel human beings.
@@justincoleman2740 Cruel ? Or just old school real world ? On the farm or in business. People get slaughtered everyday by someone who once was nice to them. If Josh thinks hard enough he is probably guilty of the same thing from a different perspective. His father was preparing him for life.
Jared, he could've just as easily said he sent the pig to the butcher. He didn't have to tell him he just ate his pet. C'mon man. Where is the humanity?
As a teen we moved to a little 2 acre farm. We got animals named them knowing we would be eating them. Charlie was the first pig we had and ate. He was delicious. Others squirmed but we knew from the start.
to do that to the pigs and then say that to his son is narcissism pure and simple - destabilising, putting him in a state of anxious uncertainty with 'dad', giving him boundless control. it's all about control. dominance. bad news.
It's hard to know the objective truth/reality of these situations. Obviously, since the current trend is to glorify victimhood, there's a natural inclination and incentive, for a person who has bad feels and memories, to seek the comfort of having their perceived situation justified as unquestioned facts, rather than objectively analyzed. I'm curious whether the pigs were obtained with the understanding that they were pets, or if it was made clear they would eventually be slaughtered but the kids viewed them as pets anyway. This is something that every kid who grows up on a farm with livestock has to learn, but the establishment of the terms is absolutely important. When I was a kid there was never any question. The animals were constantly referred to as future food and we were not allowed to play with them or name them.
people throw the word narcissism around way too much....but his dad...this is a true narcissist....a true narcissist doesn't care what you think about him...he will continue like everything is ok....also, if you cant bring yourself to care about your son who looks exactly like you.....
Most actors are narcissists... they did a study on it at Duke University. Interesting enough, they found that reality tv stars , especially the Real Housewives Franchises are the worst of all !
My dad grew up poor in the depression era 1930 he was born and he lost his dad at 10 yrs old. He raised animals on his mom’s farm to eat. My older brother and I got a pet pig and we named her Petunia. We feed her well and loved her so much. Little did we know once she got a certain weight my dad sent her off to be slaughtered.😩 I was devastated by the news at the dinner table, I couldn’t eat her! He also raised bunnies to eat and told us not bond with them because they also would be our dinner!😢
The old saying rings true with Josh "You can't pick your parents". Nice that he knows its them and not him. I know a few kids who blamed themselves and died early needlessly because of feeling unwanted.
James may have had trauma as a child or young person that shut him down, or he is just not deep. A lot of times, our parents don’t have the capacity to nurture us how we need to be nurtured. My Mom had no capacity for this, or very little anyway, but my Dad was able to provide some of it, thankfully.
Sometimes when you wish you knew more about your dad, you're just left with the memory of him slaughtering your pet pig and feeding it to you, with a smirk.
Self centered men can get back at the mothers of their children by also despising the children at some unusual points in time, in ways that make no sense other than "you remind me of your mother right now, so .... " then a diss, a gut kick, a series of vital neglects, even freezing the child out while saying, "I love you." Their hurt & wounded self regard gets triggered when they see that ex they hate in the child, and they will maintain that grudge for life. It took me a long, long time to figure that out, but it is sadly a very human response, a tragic response sometimes, and women do the same thing when a child reminds them of their ex that they still hate.
Such an interesting observation. I am full of heartfelt respect for adult children like you and Josh who have put in the hard work to break the cycle and heal.
I'm very very lucky that I got to be really good friends with my dad before he passed. Especially being Asian, most people in the Asian culture don't get to even have just a general relationship with their parents. I got to know the good, the bad and the downright horrific about the man. And now in my 30's I get to reassess who my dad really was without the rose tinted glasses but with all the information I got in the 18 years we shared together. Miss ya pops. Wish we could have one of our long talks again someday.
My mom put my dog down because her new husband didn't want a dog at his house. She finally confessed that right before her death.I had to let it go. Now have a dog after 48 years.
We had it a little rough growing up, a lot chaos and a few felonies. A very angry, unhappy mother and a father prone to violence. I lost my brother when he was sixteen over it and never once did my parents talk about it. They blamed a fantasy. In my thirties I wrote a very detailed and honest email to my father laying it all out on the table. That was the last communication we had. He was a high ranking police officer and he wasn't going to talk about anything that happened in the past. He died on his Sunday afternoon jog nine months later. I still don't know what to make of that.

Months later they got a package of ribs that delivered to her home in Detroit with the pet pig’s name written on it. When she asked about it, realized that it had been her pet pig, Blackie. My dad had the same pleasant, but emotional stop. He also would tell me about how they kill kittens on a farm, not seeing how that fact might hurt.
That's pretty demented. Why don't they just get cats fixed and not hurt cats some people are so screwed up in the head... Anybody who can harm little baby animals like that is truly demented
More people should be about breaking chains, not passing them down. ⛓
Amen 🙏🏻 to dat
I think he may have found it harder to break that chain if he was his father's son. I respect his level of introspection. Real self awareness and maturity.
For the interviewer to ask about being fed his own pets with a gross gamma giggle tells you everything you need to know. Much respect Josh. You came out the better man all around.
I love bacon, but that is fucked up thing to do to your kid. On another note, Josh Brolin seems like a good dude!
He was abused by his father. An extraordinarily cruel thing to do. Josh does seem like a good dude! Full of love and understanding.
His father's generation is full of cruel human beings.
@@justincoleman2740
Cruel ? Or just old school real world ?
On the farm or in business. People get slaughtered everyday by someone who once was nice to them.
If Josh thinks hard enough he is probably guilty of the same thing from a different perspective.
His father was preparing him for life.
@@jaredleicht1656Cruel.
Didn't know Christian Bale was Josh Brolin's dad?
They do look alike, but their mannerisms are completely different.
😂 dude I came to comment something serious about the fucked up story and found this 😂 🍻
I was thinking young Tom Cruise 😂
Ikr
😂😂😂😂
to do that to the pigs and then say that to his son is narcissism pure and simple - destabilising, putting him in a state of anxious uncertainty with 'dad', giving him boundless control. it's all about control. dominance. bad news.
Josh Brolins Dad looks way too much like Christian Bale.
I know yall are thinking it too
lol definitely gave me American psycho vibes with the title
Just came to this video for that reason..to say how much he looks like christian bale..he could be christian bale's father or brother
What is happening right now, it’s scary!
Always thought so
No. I couldn't get past the cruelty and insensitivity to bother about how he looked
He taught him reality which is rare for actors.
Ya but it’s not so much what he did but how he did it.
That’s not teaching reality it’s just masochism
He could have just farted in his face pinned down on the ground. Thats a reality check too. Isnt it?
That’s actually psychological abuse and should never be anyone’s reality.
Greetings from Florida 🐬 Thank You for Sharing 💕 Josh ✨ has truly turned pains into purposes !
My dad did stuff like that. So did my grandpa. They thought they were hilarious.
You; where's fluffy my rabbit? Grandpa; wanna hear a joke? Dad; No, let me tell it.... 🐰🐰
He had it rough
Well I'm glad hes trying to be a good parent to his children. Had no idea of his background.
😱 ~ Why would Josh's Dad slaughter the pigs he'd raised?!? That's so heartless + to tell him what occurred while Josh is eating ... 🤯
This made me think differently about this guy. Way more respect
This is one of the most silent generation things to do to your GenX kid storys that I've ever heard.
Same story. As siblings my mother told us we were eating Sally. (Our pig. And she had sucklings)
this guy has done some of my fav movies dude... american gangster is one of them!!
Brolin is straight up X Gen in the best way possible.
Making a kid eat his own pet could lead to some deep psychological Hannibal Lecture sh*t. So not cool 😥
It's bizarre that "He's his mother's son" but he looks eerily just like his Father.
Jesus Christ how are you not traumatized? That is so fucked up.
Farmers and their children aren't.
@ Well when you eat food dingusaurus, not when it’s a pet.
@ That’s kindof child abuse. That’s so fucked. If it was for food that is different. Like different stocks kind of thing.
I can't lie, when he said he broke the chain with his daughter and he is still filling her questions out:
That broke me up.
Meanwhile farmers children all across the land.
@@TheAgentAssassin yes.
Let's hope they bring good crop for the next generation. Peace to farmer's children.
@@TheAgentAssassinI couldn't ever eat a pig! They are intelligent, loving animals... I've been a vegetarian for 4 years. I never could eat a pig though.
Josh seems so unhollywood
I think Josh has a lot more love for his mom than his dad. His dad killed his pet pigs and fed them to him, and his mom loved animals.
his dad looks so much like christian bale in that thumbnail its crazy
Jeez I used to in live with his dad 😅
This is the saddest shit I've heard in a long time.
Omg Christian Bale!!!
I'm a Born Again Christian, and life is a great gift, but unlike Josh, this place is not my home.
It must suck going through life feeling like that.
@@jon2026 Not at all. Not sure if you have noticed yet, but the earth is under a curse and brings a certain death. Thank God He sent His Son to deliver us from it. Hope you find what you're looking for here...

❤️🩹 ~ Josh's Dad, James was raised in a very different generation; where men simply did not talk about their feelings - and - probably less so with their children! ❤️🩹
Yes that’s true. But the ‘Guess what you’re eating….either Oink or Snort’ parenting moment is something altogether different. That absolutely cannot be categorized as generational experience. It’s simply cruel and emotionally abusive behaviour.
Excuse me...but the dad is a narcissist too..not just the mom..and hes sadistic
He married Barbra Streisand. THAT says alot about his personality Impact! How close could he be with grandchildren
James Brolin DENIAL living an unrealistic make believe life with same type spouse
While he sadistic pushes hard reality on his child. A sadistic harsh IMPACT. Very negative.
Josh talks openly about the damage his own narcissistic mother did to both himself and his dad. His Dad married Barbara later, when Josh was 27. She had nothing to do with his father’s actions before that time. In fact, he says that Barbara was so glad to be part of a family, that she went all in. He said Barbara would ask if he was eating and taking care of himself, but his own mother never, ever did. So, Barbara is NOT the problem here, whether you like her or not.
@starla. conservatives like myself don't hate her, barbra.. she finds us deplorable below HER standards and ready to leave usa---- please go and take insecure bully hubby with you. Made for each other. Poor grandchildren
@@starla.Always politics with these people.
I think both parents were/are narcissists.
Josh was sheltered from reality of living on a farm except from morals and drugs
Not surprising to hear. Growing up, my parents often watched the Merv Griffin Show where James Brolin was a frequent guest. We ALL thought he was an enormous obnoxious jerk. No wonder Barbra Streisand married him.
I was served my pet lamb Frisky as an 8 yr old girl
Gen X reality
Abuse was the norm
Or he was teaching you where meat comes from.
James Brolin always struck me as a complete narcissist. They always have relationships with people or I should say interactions that they are the only ones that dictate the terms of said interactions.
He’s married to Barbara Streisand so that explains a lot
Because you're so helpful and kind to people,.lol~
Horrible! Imagine psychological drama? Some parents need jailing!
How cruel.
Thats aweful, as an aquarius like josh i never could even say to someone else kids that we having his pet pigs or cows as dinner lol.. my dad did same thing with my baby brother, his baby goat lol my brother never fond my dad still today he not eat goat meat and not even felt bad on my dad passing, well there other issues.. Josh dad james brolin has no empathy being taurus same with my late dad neither empathy being Aries, but yes he was very kindest man helped many poor people but he not kind to my brother when he needed him, he hardly there we raised our baby brother with our mother..
My grandfather named the animals on the farm, and they were in the freezer by name and date.
How do you feel about that?
@@MisterWilliamss it the way I was raised. It’s odd I know, and to be fair was a bit creepy, but as I also helped raise the animal, including putting them on a lead and or directing them to the butcher to killed and processed onsite. I was never shocked that they were suddenly on the table.
Dont know if this guy is josh brolins dad but he definitely christian bales.
i raised pigs and told my daughter, who was 5, that the pigs are your pets until they are our meal...no big deal...i think what is Dad did is ok but i wish his Dad had told him about how 'pet to meal' is a reality...tks
Yep, his first mistake is naming the pigs, it happened to us we named our cow Maggie and one day I come home Maggie's gone and there's meat in the refrigerator I didn't eat meat for a while our neighbor said don't ever ever name your animals so after that it was easier,
It's a big deal. I would have been traumatized and it would have impacted my relationship and trust with my parents for life. Cruel beyond words.
Most farmers make it very clear that these are not pets and you shouldn't bond with them.
Animals have a soul!!
So we all saw Christian Bale right?
I don't know it's kind of weird to send my Dad a list a questions and a tape recorder. Why not just do it in person with your Dad?
I think that is what Josh's dad was hoping would happen.
I'm pretty sure Charlotte's Web doesn't end that way.
That’s horrible 😰
What would you expect from Barbara's husband
Nothing to do with Barbra, Josh has said she has been quite caring towards him.
@staciejackson7497 so, Barbara still sux
There was a Moth Radio Hour episode where a girl from Detroit, who spent her summers at her family’s pig farm in Macon Georgia, raised a pig one summer. Months later they got a package of ribs that delivered to her home in Detroit with the pet pig’s name written on it. When she asked about it, realized that it had been her pet pig, Blackie. She then lamented that he was delicious. Still kinda f’d up though. Imagine doing that to your dogs or cats. Just, no.
The key is not getting attached to the ones you are going to eat and not eating the ones you're attached to. Damn, we humans are weird. Lol
