Finally! I've been waiting for someone to review Spanish knives. In general, Spanish knives are excellent quality and price. They are lifetime knives. High end brands are Joker, Cudeman, CDS, Jeo-Tec, J&V, and Muela, with many of them made in Albacete Spain (East Coast). Do you see the BS9 stamp on the blade. That stamp means that it is specifically made for bushcraft/survival, and stands for Buschcraft Supervivencia 9--Extremely high quality knife. My favorite BS9 knife is the Cudeman Quercus BS9. It's a beast. Thank you for reviewing. Don't forget the beast folders offered by Jeo-Tec, Cudeman, and J&V.
@@DrewLeon Thank you for your comment concerning spanish blades. I appreciated it very much. 👍🏻 (From personal experience I only know Muela and Nieto.)
Since Roman times, Troops on the Iberian peninsula have fielded far superior blades of a Falcata or Large Spatha type, not to mention good knives, and armor. But their hey-day is in the 1500's -1600's The fact that the swords from Toledo didn't break time and again under combat stresses, when others would have, was what enabled the Conquistador's to fight hand to hand as much and as long as they did.
I’ve been to one of the forges in Toledo when I was in high school. We got to watch one of the craftsman forge a blade for 30 minutes. It was very interesting. I was able to purchase one of their knives as well as a wakizashi made I that forge.
As a Spaniard who lives in Toledo (Spain), I know a friend who has worked in one of the sword factories because the making of swords is a tradition here since the Middle Ages. There they make many old swords that they sell to tourists or for those who practice fencing, but they also make knives for the army of many countries. On one occasion, many years ago, he told me that they were making knives for the American Army. I don't know if they are still making them, because my friend no longer works on it. But it is true, in Spain the manufacture of cutlery is an ancient tradition, and the most famous provinces for it are Toledo and Albacete. If you ever see knives for kitchen or for whatever use and you see that they are made in Albacete or Toledo, they will surely be of good quality.
Great video Aaron. Not surprised Spanish-made steel impressed you. They’ve been renown for their swords throughout history. Makes sense that those skills have evolved into great knife-making.
Still on the top man. But we thing a knife may cost 120 euros or less. The heat treatment that we give to this knifes make a flexible blade, easy to sharpen, resistance to corrosion. In this country we have wet and dry weather. Knives are prepared to be used in this different conditions. Olive tree is one of the hardest woods to work, and this knives work very, very well with that wood, pine, curly birch, walnut etc.. The people who doesn't understand a lot of steels, believe, having a cpm, an vg10 is having the best steel. Look victorinox, Buck.. They used other budgets steel but the heat treatment give them strenth and flexibility. Kabar knifes are using 1095 carbon steel, the heat treatment is so cool. Sometimes is not the steel, is the way you work with it
I never understood the "Does X country make good products?" question. It's up to the individual company whether they want to build quality or not. I've had good products and garbage products come out of the same countries (US companies included)
@@woodlandbiker check out the cjrb knives using chinese steel they are really good. A knife is not complicated technology almost any country could make a good knife
Joker is one of a handful of Spanish makers that are breaking out of the traditional mold, diversifying their catalogs with steels that are not 1.4116 (they all do a hell of a treat on those, but it's been done in Spain forever), current handle materials, kydex sheaths and so forth, while on examples like the Lynx here paying attention to a correct stock thickness for a knife that size AND ditching the ubiquitous hollow grind. Some of them are also catching up to folder trends, like the Salamandra Temis, a bearing flipper in N690 AND WITH A POCKET CLIP!! (c'mon Spain, putting a clip on a knife is not that difficult). Another brand to keep an eye on is Nieto.
I have a lynx, nomad, and ursus. All are very nice. I'm partial to smaller thinner knives like the ursus and lynx. However, the nomad is exactly what it was designed to be and extremely comfortable to use. It's nice to see someone do a review on the lynx. I got my wife the canadanise knife and made a kydex sheath for it. It's also great.
I own a few stag bowies from Joker and they are build to last. Sheaths are very durable and the overall build quality is outstanding. Prices are imo decent for what you get. Thanks for the review and giving this brand some attention overseas. Cheers from the Netherlands!
Great review as usual. I have a couple Aitor knives which are made in Spain and they seem to be well made as well. One knife I’d like to see reviewed is the Aitor Jungle King I. It is an iconic hollow handle knife they have produced since the 80’s. As always thanks for the work you do.
Love my Joker Rabbit with olive wood handles and leather belt sheath. I have been using it as a utility and general use knife in my EDC rotation for the last 4+ years
Very good video and above all objective. For my part I bought the lynx and the avispa and I am not disappointed. They are really good quality knives. Can't wait to order the nomad.
I have this knife. For me, It compares more to the Gerber Gator Premium fixed blade. I like both, but I prefer the Gators rubber handle. The Jokers handle is a little slick. Wish it was canvas micarta.
I just bought a Joker Lynx a couple weeks ago, and was thrilled to see your review. I also have the Nordico and a boot knife style Bolero (has a Bull Horn handle). They are all beautifully made knives. Look forward to your reviews on the other two Jokers.
I got the Lynx and the Bushcrafter. Just excellent. The sheath buttons are nicely tight. Matching ferro rods, nice touch. Great grinds, great finish, great ergonomics. I'll also get the Nomad, for a larger option and that sweet convex. Maybe a scandi as well, like the Ember. It's the scandi variation of the Bushcrafter, which is a wonderful full flat. Thank you for being curious about the Lynx and getting it and reviewing it. It's outstanding. :)
They make a carbon steel slip joint with a full flat grind under $20 that blows opinels out of the water. The one I received (from an eBay seller) had some fit and finish issues along the back of the knife but it performed so well I can still recommend it and anyway it feels slightly custom having put some work into it. Solid snap too
Great video and knives. I've had a Joker folding slipjoint knife, which I've been using for Edc over the last year. Lovely little traditional blade. One of my favourite to edc here in the UK. Like yourself I didn't know much about the brand when I purchased. But since have done a little research and believe the region of Spain these are made in is well known for its cutlers. Much like Sheffield here in the UK is. It has a long standing guild that Joker are members of. The guild are known for keeping their quality standards high is everything that comes out of their factories. As some have said before Spanish steel used to be thought of as some of the best in the world, and I see no reason not to believe that still.
I bought one on Amazon, in Bohler K720 steel. The blade had corrosion marks on both sides :-( The blade had some sort of oil on it and a plastic wrapper. I bought another one, with Sandvik steel. That one is in perfect condition.
My go to knife for bushcraft is Joker Nordico ... had it for like 2 years now and I love it...I love the Ember too and also have the Nomad but it is way to massive for my use :) ... the next spanish knife I want is a Muela Rhino ...not exactly my tipe of knife but I wanna try it and for some reason I really love it's shape so it is a "must have" :)))
I own a Muela Husky RWL34, basically a hunting knife and a Nieto Terrano Scandi N690co, a bushcraft knife. Have a look at the Nieto Terrano Scandi or Flat in N690co or O2. I think the Nieto N690co in Scandi is an amazing knife, and best bushcraft knife, prized half or a third its value. Spanish blades were some of the western worlds best since the dark ages.
I love the looks of this knife and the orange scales...hard to lose a knife with bright orange handle. That leather sheath looks to be of a great quality. In some full tang knives I prefer a good leather sheath over kydex; however, the opposite with small knives like Esee Izula. Those two other knives are good looking knives as well, especially the larger Nomad. Looking forward to your review on them. Great review, Aaron! Bryan at Survival on Purpose did a review on the Jeo-Tec and included the "rotation and balance test" which is always fun to watch.
Nice review ! Just received my Nomad and can't say enough good things about it. A bit heavy, but it is almost "Randall-esk" in quality ! And for a whole lot less !
Loved the knife! Simple, super functional and very well done. I guess the Joke's on us! I've seen some really solid cutlery from Spain. I recommend you to try some Cudeman knife, they have very nice designs with really some of the best looking micarta I've seen out there. Stuff made in Europe tend to be very good in general so it's no surprise.
Just ordered this knife via your Amazon Link. I was looking for a knife like the SOG Field Knife but with better steel and an affordable price (paid $73 plus tax) I think this is it! Fyi, I have ordered a couple of other knives through your links as well, Thanks!
Was searching for reviews on Joker Knives after visiting the Dutch Knife Exhibition. Your video's are getting me and a buddy of mine (back) into this brand. 🤗👍🏻
Simply put, asking "does Spain make good knives" is a lot like asking "does Italy make good pasta". As has been pointed out, Toledo steel (from Toledo Spain) has always been of the highest quality. In the past, swords made in Toledo were highly prized. Toledo sword-makers are even found in historical fiction, serious and not-so-serious. "Alo! My name is Enigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!" []
Yes that's how it is. Romans were praising Iberian forgers, too. Moreover, I wouldn't expect this mainstream "knife guy", to know such things. Probably, only able to point where Spain is on the map...
Thanks for doing this video, and great to see the quality is very good. I purchased a Joker Jerezana folding knife, and was sorely disappointed in the quality. This Lynx just redeemed the brand and I may have to give it a try!
I've bought about 4 joker knives this year all are great , really nicely done. I tried to find this lynx on amazon and can't find it. Well I did find this knife but its not in 695 steel but 1.4116 stainless & not on Amazon. Nice job on video
Another great review. Haven’t bought a knife in a while. Last one I bought was the gso 5. Love it. Because of your review just pulled the trigger on this joker. Thanks Arron. I have been watching you since the beginning. Always enjoy the content.
Nice. I thought the Spanish-made knives were forgotten. I have an Aitor Magnum Bowie circa 1995. I was in college when my Mom gifted me the knife because I was always doing jungle treks. Steel is strong, keeps sharp and easy to sharpen but the sandblast finish was weak. Corrosion started on some areas of the sandblast finish so I always clean and oil this knife. Once upon Spain was known for its sharp, high quality steelware. Most Spanish cutleries were bought out due to intense competition with less expensive knives on the market.
The Chinese did a lot of damage to the Spanish cutlery industry because they counterfeit everything and sell fake products that later discredit the original brand. But there are still good factories in Spain that make very good products, some have even moved their production to China, because that way they can at least control the manufacturing process. But I think that what I say is not news to anyone, the markets are full of counterfeits made in China.
I bought the Joker Ursus after seeing your reviews. Fantastic knife and everything your are saying is true in my experience. The only negative is that the leather sheath needs to be wet formed to avoid it being cut when re-sheathing. I cut through the sheath that came with the knife and they were nice enough to replace it. Now that it’s formed, it fits perfectly and no issue with getting in and out. Fully agree the snaps on the belt loop are a drawback on the sheath as well. It never feels secure, so I’m going to mod it and maybe make my own Kydex sheath as well.
I don’t know how often you look at the comments, but I’d really like you to take a look at the grohmann knives out of Canada. The #4 grohmann and the number one. You are really the only knife reviewer that I trust anymore as most people just review them out of the box. Great job and keep up the good work. I’ve been watching you for a few years now and you do great!
I just went down the Joker rabbit hole recently. Can say the quality is great, but for the price? Amazing. Have a Nomad and it feels excellent in the hand. Haven't put it through it's paces much yet but it fills a sweet spot gap in my collection as far as blade length, width grind etc. The sheath is excellent and the ferro rod is one of the best I've used. Add the matching handle slick factor and you have a pretty sweet knife. Got my GF one of the traditional bushcraft style blades in Sandvik for Christmas
I've got a couple of Joker folders. They are very good looking knives, good value for money, but I didn't find they took a truly good edge, a working edge definitely, but they are not "Opinel" sharp; the exception is my little Joker carbon folder, it's a razor.
Hi, I wanted to know if in your opinion the Nordic joker is an excellent bushcraft knife? is 14c28n steel a very good quality steel in your opinion? thanks Michele.
Never heard of Albacete knives before? Albacete pocket knives have been around for centuries. The famous French Laguiole knives copied and modified their design and added the trademark fly on them instead of the traditional safety catch
Hi both Joker and muela are outstanding knives I Owen 4 muela Duque-25S & Dugue-25 M & the Grid 12S, the Joker 101 . The strange thing is I was looking for months at the muela Crown Stag handled knives trying to pull the string and bang the Duque pops up for 104 dollars I clicked on the buy button and it was mine and a few months later the same thing happened on the other duke all the others full price . They are a knife design made for pig hunting i would never buy one of these designs in a million years if it were not for that price both crown stag that is my down fall I just can't resist . I have probably 18 crown stag handled knives all Bowie style every one has come loose over time and I have had to pin them . I have beat the hell out of all 3 of both the muela and Joker knives I have no idea how they do it but they are as solid as the day I got them . As to the steel and workman ship I have not seen better edge retention it is as good as it gets the workman ship is flawless I did have an issue with one sheath but took care of that . The only thing I can figure out on those low prices is they hold them for as long as they can then just cut the price to make room for new stock . I just check if I'm home on the computer hoping to score at 77 years old I need these like I need a hot rock in my pocket . Glad to see some is one is reviewing the Spanish blades . I will tell you I have worn the Duke -25S every day for 2 weeks on a trip I got used to it eve though it is a vary large carry it grows on you and the shape did not hinder me in any way doing the usual stuff on a camping trip you can split wood or anything else that needs to be done and I have yet needed to sharpen any of them the grid is an every day carry now for months . It's all in the heat treat . Happy Trails
Very nice. Love all those designs. My biggest problem is that my wallet is always empty when I see a knife I’d like to get. I wouldn’t mind any one of those blades. I am currently looking at the Boker mini tracker. It’s a collaboration with Wenger blades. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Great video awesome awesome content. Later brother.
BS-9’s Designs are great. I like the Cudeman’s & the Joker’s. N695 is a very good (rebalanced) 440-C that that is quite plastic even at 60+ HRC, & holds a 15 degree/side Edge.
I have come to know from your videos and others that the Joker knives are no joke. I am looking to acquire the Nomad and the Nessmuk. However on Amazon they do not offer the Nessmuk but the Canadian. Is the Joker Canadian the Nessmuk. I am from the Adirondacks and would like to honor George Washington Sears in carrying a variant of his knife while trekking through the same wilderness he did. Thank you for your reviews and insight. I find them most informing. Keep up the great work.

I'm from Spain and I didn't know we make knives this good
That's a great comment buddy. Needed to smile.
Jo macho debes ser el único, el made in Toledo o Albacete, lo puedes ver hasta en los comics de Mortadelo y Filemón
It is a great knife. I remember the day it came out and the tests that were done. thank you very much for the review
Spanish knives are the best for budget. I just got my first joker in K720. It's amazing well done.
I did get the kydex sheath with the fire steel and the orange handle. Looks like the one you have there. Love everything about this knife.
That grip is why I just sold my Bradford 4.5 to narrow
I just went down the Joker rabbit hole recently. Can say the quality is great, but for the price? Amazing. Have a Nomad and it feels excellent in the hand. Haven't put it through it's paces much yet but it fills a sweet spot gap in my collection as far as blade length, width grind etc. The sheath is excellent and the ferro rod is one of the best I've used. Add the matching handle slick factor and you have a pretty sweet knife. Got my GF one of the traditional bushcraft style blades in Sandvik for Christmas
Awesome review! Just received my Sandvik Birchwood Nordico with matching fire steel, looks absolutely amazing 👍
That’s a great looking shape! 😃. Reminds me of some of the Bark River designs.
Interesting color of handle.
Spain has always produced good steel - Bahco also has plants there producing tools :)
I've got a couple of Joker folders. They are very good looking knives, good value for money, but I didn't find they took a truly good edge, a working edge definitely, but they are not "Opinel" sharp; the exception is my little Joker carbon folder, it's a razor.
You should get some Kizlyar knives to review. The Kizlyar Supreme Sturm in PGK steel looks amazing.
Sure like that Nordico. Looks like a great bushcrafter.
I own one! Looks just like the one in this video. Excellent thickness and durability!
Joker, J&V, Jeo-Tec and Ifield all grate! And I believe are the same parent company. Cudeman is also a very fine knife as well.
Hi, I wanted to know if in your opinion the Nordic joker is an excellent bushcraft knife? is 14c28n steel a very good quality steel in your opinion? thanks Michele.
it is a good knife for the price and the steel.
@@gideonstactical is 14c28n steel better or peggliorw for this type of knife than n690co? Thanks again
I regret not getting any classic Muela knives from Spain.
That blade is wicked sharp!
Acabo de comprar el nuevo Lynx. No sabía lo de la funda de kydex. Voy por una. Gracias.
Just looking at these on amazon the other day, thanks for the info and review.
Use mine all the time for deer hunting here in Oz, awesome knife does the job well!
Congrats BS-9 well done 👍🏻
I'm looking forward to you reviewing the nomad! I've been looking at that one.
Never heard of Albacete knives before? Albacete pocket knives have been around for centuries.
The famous French Laguiole knives copied and modified their design and added the trademark fly on them instead of the traditional safety catch
Spain has been making knives forever... excellent heat treating. Even their base steels perform well. Puma IP are made in Spain.
Iberian blades are renowned since at least the iron age. They were actually better quality than the Roman blades.
The Nomad👌👍 Great Great Knife💪👍
Wow. I just purchased the WT Elbrus I ll keep this in mind though. Great camp knife
The kydex sheath version. Is it reversible for a left handed user?
It’s ok and better than the right hand sheaths.
Drop some superglue on the snaps and just use it like a normal sheath
I've bought the lynx nomad and erizol
I just purchased a lynx
Hi. I have this exact knife with the kydex sheath. It’s a great knife.
The Victorinox bushcraft knives are made in Spain, that should tell you something about the ability of Spain to produce good knives.
Excellent video and a great blade. Italy is and has been making great knives. Thanks Aaron enjoy your weekend
Kudos from Spain
Where can I get the Kydex sheath for the Lynx?
Gread sounding knife.
I'm looking forward to those other two in the future reviews
BS-9’s Designs are great. I like the Cudeman’s & the Joker’s. N695 is a very good (rebalanced) 440-C that that is quite plastic even at 60+ HRC, & holds a 15 degree/side Edge.
For $100 I’ll give them a try great video
I have come to know from your videos and others that the Joker knives are no joke. I am looking to acquire the Nomad and the Nessmuk. However on Amazon they do not offer the Nessmuk but the Canadian. Is the Joker Canadian the Nessmuk. I am from the Adirondacks and would like to honor George Washington Sears in carrying a variant of his knife while trekking through the same wilderness he did. Thank you for your reviews and insight. I find them most informing. Keep up the great work.
Hi Aaron. I love the looks and specs of this knife , I may have to get one . I think it's beneficial having the top of the handle near the front scalloped/recessed if you're going to baton . Thanks
I love how much handle I have on my terava jaakaripukko knife, great knife for me an fir the money.
