Morrissey has been a strict vegetarian since his teens and has not been shy about stridently expressing his beliefs concerning animal rights. The title track of The Smiths' second album, this song finds him imploring their fans to abstain from meat. Morrissey wrote in his autobiography: "The aspirant moment is the title track. Each musical notation an image, the subject dropped into the pop arena for the first time, and I relish to the point of tears this chance to give voice to the millions of beings that are butchered every single day."
I always have to trot out my little story re: this song. I was listening one day on my drive home. I live in South Florida where sometimes it'll be raining in your backyard but not in the front. I turned onto a street and into the rain which coincided *PERFECTLY* with the start of the rain part of the song 🥹😭 It was amazing.
Let’s go this is legendary. This is a great album. You gotta hit Strangways here we come their last album as it’s quite underrated but also a very good album.
Barbarism has SUCH a good bassline but I have no idea how Roarke could play that for 7 MINUTES STRAIGHT. I play it for half that and my fingers are like "damn man this bass got hands"
Only bangers on this channel 🔥 Next one should be Hatful Of Hollow, although it’s a compilation of various singles and B sides, it features some of their best material that isn’t on any of their studio albums
Ok ty for commenting bc I was confused where the track went! I definitely knew that 15 yr old me ran out and bought a copy of MiM right after hearing How Soon Is Now? for the first time 🚬🪦🥀🖤😝
You really need to react to Louder than Bombs. It's a compilation that collects their non-albums singles and it's incredible. Almost every song is a banger. Probably my favourite release by them (though The Queen Is Dead might edge it out)
This album rules. Still maintain the title track is corny and lame and not good. It was the first Smiths songI ever heard and it turned me off from them for a while.
Andy regularly played a Yamaha Bb2000 or a Fender P bass. Dude was massive and carried these albums with Mike and Johnny. He would say that he tried to make the bass lines songs within the songs which is evident cause they’re catchy as hell.
Hey speaking of the smiths, you gotta do another Elliott Smith album🌚 you've done all of them except his first and last albums and i recommend his last one, From a basement on the hill. its excellent and every song on it has been my favorite E.S song at one point :D
How’s about we get some Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds onto this smorgasbord (Smagsasbord?!). From Her to Eternity is very tasty. (And I’m even more excited about a few albums downstream, but we gotta start with the amuse bouche.)
Meat is Murder is my favorite album by The Smiths. Love all of those songs. I would have trouble ranking the albums as I like all of them but which one I listen to depends on my mood at that moment. Clearly it’s The Smiths on each album but each album has a different vibe. Hatful of Hollow is a compilation album with different takes of songs from other albums and b-sides. That one started it all for me.
Hum is still appreciated in their home Champaign/Urbana, IL. Leader Matt T runs a music bar but I forgot its name. But I recall musicians from different genres including hardcore recommend it
HIGHLY recommend you check out R.E.M.! Peter Buck is their “Johnny Marr.” I’d start with their debut “Murmur.” Very similar guitar techniques they bring to the table. Also here’s my personal ranking of the 4 Smiths albums: 1. The Queen is Dead 2. Meat is Murder 3. The Smiths 4. Strangeways, Here We Come
"I've seen it happen in other people's lives and now it's happening in mine" great album. I especially like The Headmaster Ritual because school is cruel to many kids and they really nailed it 💪🎤
Huh, I just discovered "How Soon Is Now?" wasn't part of the album's original track listing. Was disappointing not seeing you react to that one, so I hope you do "Hatful of Hollow" which is full of classics.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Hey! You should react to more Brian Eno. It would be really cool to see you react to his early rock albums. 'Taking Tiger Mountain' is a masterpiece. It's like a mixture between early 70's Bowie and Can or someone. It truly sounds like it's another wavelength to everything else.
handily my favorite smiths album, every single band member is giving it their all and it comes together as a brilliant frenetic whole. morrissey may suck, but god he can write a song
ranking becuase i love all their albums: The smiths louder then bombs Strange ways here we come Hatful of hallow the queen is dead meat is murder the sound of the smiths the world won’t listen
It’s a shame that many of the smiths greatest tunes like ask, William it was really nothing, panic, and please let me get what I want we’re all stand alone non album singles. Their compilation album louder than bombs is essential for this reason. It has some songs from their album you’ve listened to but most of it is non album singles and b sides which are amazing. You should also check out one of the first two albums by suede. They’re a Brit pop band who kinda sound like the 90’s version of the smiths but with a lot of Bowie glam rock thrown in.
headmaster ritual and that joke isn’t funny anymore are some of my top favorite smiths songs ever dude. riding down the road with the windows down + headmaster ritual??? just do it- no questions. ESPECIALLY during fall
"That joke isnt funny anymore" is definitely close to my favorite smiths song ever, the wailing reverby sound in the latter half is so cool
I like Unhappy Birthday which begins with a sad guitar wail 🎸 Johnny is guitar genius!
This album contains BOTH my fav Smitys song “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” and my least favorite “the title track”
roman candle❤
Nowhere Fast is unbelievably underrated imo
@@ericlayton8888 I love it

Gasping, dying, but somehow still alive
Well I Wonder is just one of those songs for me.
my favourite song of the smiths

true that. new wave or no wave.
Their best album in my books.
Especially the US version with How Soon is Now
@@patrick3926 This! I was kinda hoping for Smags to react to it.
Facts

frrr lol, bass line is amazing but difficult to get down AND play for so long

Hatful of Hollow is by far my favourite! It captures the energy of the band perfectly!
Probably my favourite Smiths album, I said you would like it. Try Suede’s self titled debut, were the British Smiths of the 90’s.
Johnny Marr...guitar god

Going blank again > nowhere
@@SD-ou3pt Absolutely disagree, I find Nowhere to be superior, but to each their own.

Time for another Cure review I think - I'd go for Faith or The Head On The Door. And Outside by Bowie obv 😉
