I like to cut Greek yogurt containers into 4 inch narrow triangles and write on one side. I also happen to use chicken wire around my in ground portion of my garden and they weave nicely into the honeycomb wires. Therefore I can take them from seedling, to up pot, to in ground with a single marker!
I can't clearly and emphatically enough express how much I admire your work, not excluding your magnificent organizational abilities! I will do what I can to emulate your techniques. I, by contrast , prep the soil and plant only a few things systematically. The largest part of m garden is really just a yard where I toss out old seeds from seed packets well past their expiration dates. Amazingly, all kinds of plants have grown well for me from the method. It's just a matter of scattering the seasonally appropriate seeds at the right time of year for them.
I use the plastic ones that are alittle smaller then the steel ones you use. Tip for plastic ones. You can use rubbing alcohol to remove the old marker from most material 😊

Hi Jenna, Long time gardener here. I have stopped writing on my markers. I now use painters tape to label everything. The pots and the markers get a bit of tape. Saves me a lot as I don't need to buy new labels until they break. I also us a small metal fence post (about 3 feet tall) and I put a piece of scrap 2 x 4 on top of it for my large marker needs. Again I just write out the names on my painters tape and I am good for the season. I peel them off and re-label the next season. I hope this helps anyone on a budget. Happy gardening all .
I use milk jug plastic cut into 2x2 inch squares. Fold in half and use scissors to make slits on top and bottom cutting from center. Unfold and flatten out. Then use any stick or twig to run through the slits. Using any stick/twig allows you to pick the height needed. Write the name with a Sharpie Extreme marker - it's more durable and just a bit more expensive than normal sharpie. It will last 1-2 years, plastic squares can be re-used when writing wears off.
I'm going to be putting on a few native plant beds this Spring, if Spring ever gets here. I've decided to put plant labels out so my family, as they traverse the property between houses, can see what I have planted. BUT my idea is instead of just a name, I am going to put QR codes on the signs along with the name so they can scan it and find out all about it. Sounds cool huh! I'm thinking thick card stock laminated and put on something. We shall see how it goes.
white 2 inch wide plastic window blind slats, cut into pickets to push into the soil and oil based paint markers. i picked a bunch up on marketplace and have enough forever. i really like this system as i can read them from far away and they all match, wide popsicle sticks for seedlings.
I use fabric stakes and a piece of Duct Tape around the top. Then to reuse them I simply stick a new piece of tape over the old label. This helps to make them even thicker and more durable.
I'm from Australia and find that even the "extreme" sharpies fade quite quickly. I swapped to using plastic tags with a garden pencil (but a 2B pencil is fine too). Doesn't fade, doesn't wash off - ever. I wash them in soapy water and then use an eraser to reuse. Probably not the best if you want something that you can read at a distance though. For fruit trees I stamp my own copper tags but apparently that can attract the attention of parrots - so I may need to rethink that if it seems to be attracting them.
I used those same plastic labels at first and then switched to popsicle sticks for others. I understand now why the plastic were better. Some of my sticks broke as they had sucked up too much water.

Great video, Jenna! I'm trying out the zinc signs as well for the first time this year. I'm seeing if a paint marker will last the season, because Sharpies are gone in about a month if they get any sun.
i poke a stick through the seed packed and put the stick in the ground when i use all the seeds. I have the metal ones you presented second and plan to engrave them for my perennials, including fruit trees and bushes. The small plastic labels i use, but used the wrong marker, so i have to go off memory. Not the best for details on memory, but "those are cucumbers" i do remember.
When using black pots a silver Sharpie works much better than a paint pen. Hairpin zinc markers are best because I don't have to worry about the dogs getting hurt. I find that Brother label maker labels will last for years. I can't always read my own writing.
You're growing Holy Italian pepper? Cool. I started growing them last year and overwintered a couple. They're producing really well now. More tasty than bell peppers. First year they were a bit late maturing, but now that they're on their second year, they're reasonably early.
Lately, I've been dropping the seedling label or the seed packet and taking a photo lol... easier and I always have my phone. Don't forget to include a landmark.

I use a paint pen on wooden tongue depressors but the do rot into the beds and so I am switching to metal if I can. i want to avoid plastic if possible.
As of now just the little 4 inch labels, i have some cute colored ones, red, blue, yellow, green and even pink i love those for my seedlings but now that im moving stuff into the ground and pick 30 gallon grow bags im trying to find something bigger. I might have to just improvise with something until later this year cause im so broke from buying a bunch of trees and growing supplies and seeds this year, lol. I went kinda nuts this year, hahaha. I spent a biiiit more than i probably should have. I love those 3x5 galvanized labels you have thats what I want but its hard to find them in that size, amazon didnt have any that big as I recall. Those in a 24" like you have is like exactly what im trying to find so they really stand out and don't just disappear in the undergrowth.

Especially with seeds, you're like "oh its only a couple dollars, only 3 dollars, oh these bulbs are only 15 thats a steal for lilies, oh and these seeds are only 1.50" so it never seems like a lot at the time, but do it enough and suddenly you realize you've spent much more than you would've thought possible on just seeds haha.

Zone 6b, do we have to harden our fall garden transplants? I automatically started planning to and another gardener, more advanced than myself, said it was just for the spring garden due to the huge difference in weather. Please help Jenna.😮
If they are started in the house or other controlled environment, I always do- but for the opposite reason that I harden them off in the spring. I want to acclimate them to the hot/humid conditions of August (when I transplant out many of the fall crops). That intense August sun will fry transplants if they are not acclimated!
If your tomato seedlings are well hardened off they should be able to withstand dips into the 40s. However, if the forecast is showing a warmup coming your way soon- I'd hold off just a bit.
Thanks. It warms up a few nights and then starts dipping back down in the forties. We have about 50 tomato plants we don't want to lose and don't want to cover at night. They are in red disposable cups that are large enough for awhile, but it is June 7 and they still aren't in the ground. Mother Nature needs to get with it .
I like the signs but, I wouldn't use thermal paper in my garden it's probably a non issue but, I know receipt thermal paper contains chemicals that cause hormone problems leading to cancer and infertility, considering it's not being used with a thermal printer I'd just use normal sticky labels or write directly on the metal and wipe it with isopropyl alchohol at the end of the year to clean off. I just use wooden popsicle sticks marked with a sharpie and half the time I don't even do that because I draw out a map of my garden every year and generally remember what's what anyway.
I keep getting my permanent marker (sharpie brand) coming off in UV rays and watering during the dry spells. I write on plastic tags meant for the garden. Can anyone point me to a UV resistant way to permanently mark my veggie plants? Maybe I can spray something over the writing or use some sort of clear tape? thanks
Hello this has nothing to do with the video content I searched your library and couldn't find any on my question. I found my first nope rope in my garden yesterday. First time it rained in over a month now. I'm also in ohio it was a medium sized brown snake I have no idea what kind maybe three feet long and about as thick as two fingers. I'm paralyzed by the thought of snakes let alone seeing them in the yard. I do not want to harm the animal just persuade them to leave lol is there anything I can do besides sucking it up?
Hi William- I'm a bit biased, as I love snakes and am always happy to see them in the garden. Garter snakes in particular are very beneficial to have in the garden. BUT- I completely understand the aversion many folks have to snakes. I had a blind that broke, cut it into pieces, wrote the plant name on it with a sharpie & stuck them in the garden. It looks great and cost nothing. Love your channel, you’ve taught me a lot as a fellow zone 6-ber.
I seen lots of people, plant their, store bought plants, with the tags they came with, but as someone that grows my plants from seed, I've never thought to put a label in front of them. Do you give tours of your garden?
Jenna, I use a sharpie and whatever I can find. 😂. Most of the time I use my brain but that doesn't work out too well. I wish I had the time to be more organized. However, everything I do seems to create 4 more things I need to do. 😬 Love your ideas and attention to detail. BTW- is that a new tattoo on your forearm? Don't remember seeing it before. Sometimes I think you inadvertently hide them. Remember, tattoos are guaranteed until death, enjoy them. They are that important. I have several myself. I use construction flags like the gas or electric company uses from big box store. They come in white, pink, orange and I write on the flag with a marker. Would like to see you do a video on seed saving. Great videos doing a binge watch now.

I know. I do keep track of what varieties are out in the garden. From there it is easy to figure what is what from sight. But my garden is tiny compared to yours.
Haha- I wondered if I would get questioned on that! I filmed the intro/outro less then a week ago and it was 45F at 8am. This morning, at the same time, it was 81-- highs in the 90s for the next several days!
When we have a big gathering we always have lots of plastic knives left over... The spoons and forks get used but the knives stay... And multiply. I peel off a piece of masking tape with the plant variety written on it and wrap it around the knife handle... Then stick it in the dirt. Easy to find and read. And reusable many times.

This year I’ve been using old miniblinds, which easily snap to the desired size. Sharpies seem to fade for me, so I have switched to using Garden Markers and they’re great. Not sure what I’ll do when the blinds run out…
I have been using mini blind color samplers (smaller/precut), on the recommendation of someone who commented on a video about plant markers by EdibleAcres. Sean from Edible Acres uses a Listo pen (sort of like a wax or grease pencil, but in pen form) and I have done the same on the mini blind markers. That said, the Listo doesn't come off, and now that I've run out of mini blind samples, I ended up buying some small plastic plant markers that I'm using with a regular pencil.
I would like to find a company that makes permanent stake tags. I would like a brushed bronze tag attached to a stained wooden stake with the name of the plant and the day it was planted.
Well it’s been trying times gardening this year Z5a WI. We haven’t had any rain for weeks, last was a tenth on May 19th. Then we had a FROST last Thursday that NONE of the meteorologists covered! It was Devastating!!! The south garden was somewhat protected I think by trees, but the later plantings out in open in north garden were mostly toast as was the berries and grapes. I had over 50 each of tomatoes and peppers in because it’s been so dang HOT here. Yesterday 2 different temp sensors registered 103* in the shade. I know we have a microclimate, but come on! I managed to get shade fabric up yesterday and today in both the south and north gardens. It has made a Huge difference already, the radishes actually look happy. All spring veg bolted except peas are looking better under shade. THEN we had Voles for heavens sake! Never seen one in my life and they soon got evicted! They ate spring bulbs were inside and outside hardware cloth on a new plant-total destruction! YESTERDAY-Ugh! Yes, there’s more- we had a mole go along a long raised bed and IN the bed of newly sprouted green beans and continued over to new carrots in ground, peppers and tomatoes!! He was evicted Promptly this morning!! When it’s dry watch where you water because moles are attracted to those areas. I don’t care if they eat grubs they ruin plants also. We haven’t had moles for years since I used Milky Spore. So here we fence everything in to protect from wildlife and we get hit with rodents and Now DROUGHT! It’s almost enough to throw the towel in. It’s hard to even look at others lush gardens without cringing over all we’ve suffered. I’m happy they can grow something and have a great climate, but it’s been the worst battle ever from starting seedlings with gnats and aphids which I’ve never had to all the above. Our chance of rain yesterday was 5 drops-yes, I counted them and today was 10 drops. I was replanting tomatoes and heard thunder and watched the cloud cruise by. My SIL sent a pic that they had puddles not far away😢. Happy for anyone that got that! It’s so dry the clouds go around or dry up. I’m sure you are experiencing drought also as Accuweather showed this pattern going east. So on with what the video is about 😊 I tried old mini blinds till I read they may have lead. Then cut up food containers and then plant markers that came with an order that fit under domes which were nice. Plant marker dried up right away and I found Sharpie Extreme and believe that will do. I haven’t found a marker system yet and would be nice to use the seedling marker, but I need them in the tray. So I jot everything down as I plant. If I had markers it would make replacing all those plants a breeze. I have 25 varieties of slicers 3 paste and 7 cherry varieties and just as many peppers because I declared this the year to find the best varieties that do well here and taste great. The Jimmy Nardellos get an A++ for surviving a frost and they look Fantastic! Now if they taste great-clear winner! I read someone used cut up aluminum cans and engraved the tags and bent them over cages, ect. I will worry about that next year when I’ve chosen the winners-IF WE CAN PRODUCE ANYTHING. I hope everyone isn’t having as bad a start as us. It’s suppose to be fun and the hose and me are at Extreme odds right now. 😂🎉

I am SO sorry to hear this. I know how very disheartening this can be. It seems like it always works that way- weather stress (especially drought) makes the critter pressure worse, so the gardener gets a double whammy. I hope it relents soon. I can't believe the craziness you are dealing with!!
Great video about a topic I rarely see anyone talk about. I have been using the 4" plastic tags for marking seedlings now for about 3 years and they work better than anything else I tried. As for marking plants outside I tried several types but didn't like how any of them performed so this year I am trying a sign with steel frame 12" long and 1 1/2" X 4" copper plate for writing on. I found a good quality marker called "Garden Marker" made in the UK that does a great job (a little better than the permanent sharpies I tried). Once it is dry (within a few seconds) it won't smear and rubbing alcohol will remove the marker so it can be used again. I will look into the galvanized markers you are using. Got this tip from a horticulturist working for a large nursery in my area and this is what she uses at home. Cut yogurt containers into strips. Then use a laundry Sharpie to write on them. They last very long without fading into oblivion and can be recycled at the end. My favorite containers are from Fage as it is thicker than others.
I just go el cheapo and use tongue depressors for my seedlings, and bought flimsy white plastic stakes for out in the garden from $Tree. Some of the tongue depressors were still good enough to use outside, though.

Thanks for asking, Jeff. So far the damage is minimal in the garden (I did have some tree damage along the property line). Lost a couple of tomatoes, and damage to the grapes and elderberries, but I think they're going to come out of it.

Hey Jenna - for plants with cages or on trellises I use wooden or bamboo clothes pins. Works well.
What type of marker do you use? I always have issue with wooden markers- once they get wet the ink bleeds and becomes hard to read.

That's what I use, mostly. and I mark them with a pencil which seems fairly weatehrproof. It's not as pretty as the metal stakes, though.
I cut up some plastic laundry detergent bottles into label stakes similar in shape to the white ones you showed at the end. Very durable.

You're growing Holy Italian pepper? Cool. I started growing them last year and overwintered a couple. They're producing really well now. More tasty than bell peppers. First year they were a bit late maturing, but now that they're on their second year, they're reasonably early.

4” plastic tags work well for me. Rubbing alcohol removes the permanent marker writing to keep using them year after year.

I cut up pot noodle pots, the plastic is very strong lasts for more that a season and you can cut out different sizes and shapes

As of now just the little 4 inch labels, i have some cute colored ones, red, blue, yellow, green and even pink i love those for my seedlings but now that im moving stuff into the ground and pick 30 gallon grow bags im trying to find something bigger. I might have to just improvise with something until later this year cause im so broke from buying a bunch of trees and growing supplies and seeds this year, lol. I went kinda nuts this year, hahaha. I spent a biiiit more than i probably should have. I love those 3x5 galvanized labels you have thats what I want but its hard to find them in that size, amazon didnt have any that big as I recall. Those in a 24" like you have is like exactly what im trying to find so they really stand out and don't just disappear in the undergrowth.

Especially with seeds, you're like "oh its only a couple dollars, only 3 dollars, oh these bulbs are only 15 thats a steal for lilies, oh and these seeds are only 1.50" so it never seems like a lot at the time, but do it enough and suddenly you realize you've spent much more than you would've thought possible on just seeds haha.

Zone 6b, do we have to harden our fall garden transplants? I automatically started planning to and another gardener, more advanced than myself, said it was just for the spring garden due to the huge difference in weather. Please help Jenna.😮
If they are started in the house or other controlled environment, I always do- but for the opposite reason that I harden them off in the spring. I want to acclimate them to the hot/humid conditions of August (when I transplant out many of the fall crops). That intense August sun will fry transplants if they are not acclimated!

In zone 6 it is still dropping into the forties at night. Should tomato plants be planted out with this still happening?
If your tomato seedlings are well hardened off they should be able to withstand dips into the 40s. However, if the forecast is showing a warmup coming your way soon- I'd hold off just a bit.
Thanks. It warms up a few nights and then starts dipping back down in the forties. We have about 50 tomato plants we don't want to lose and don't want to cover at night. They are in red disposable cups that are large enough for awhile, but it is June 7 and they still aren't in the ground. Mother Nature needs to get with it .
I like the signs but, I wouldn't use thermal paper in my garden it's probably a non issue but, I know receipt thermal paper contains chemicals that cause hormone problems leading to cancer and infertility, considering it's not being used with a thermal printer I'd just use normal sticky labels or write directly on the metal and wipe it with isopropyl alchohol at the end of the year to clean off. I just use wooden popsicle sticks marked with a sharpie and half the time I don't even do that because I draw out a map of my garden every year and generally remember what's what anyway.
I keep getting my permanent marker (sharpie brand) coming off in UV rays and watering during the dry spells. I write on plastic tags meant for the garden. Can anyone point me to a UV resistant way to permanently mark my veggie plants? Maybe I can spray something over the writing or use some sort of clear tape? thanks
Hello this has nothing to do with the video content I searched your library and couldn't find any on my question. I found my first nope rope in my garden yesterday. First time it rained in over a month now. I'm also in ohio it was a medium sized brown snake I have no idea what kind maybe three feet long and about as thick as two fingers. I'm paralyzed by the thought of snakes let alone seeing them in the yard. I do not want to harm the animal just persuade them to leave lol is there anything I can do besides sucking it up?
Hi William- I'm a bit biased, as I love snakes and am always happy to see them in the garden. Garter snakes in particular are very beneficial to have in the garden. BUT- I completely understand the aversion many folks have to snakes. Try removing the ink from your labels, with methylated spirits. It gets the print off, so you can reuse the label.

Hi Jenna, subscriber from zone 6b southern Mass. I watched a video last yr on the YT channel EdibleAcres about making plant markers out of old blinds. I had a blind that broke, cut it into pieces, wrote the plant name on it with a sharpie & stuck them in the garden. It looks great and cost nothing. Love your channel, you’ve taught me a lot as a fellow zone 6-ber.

I use construction flags like the gas or electric company uses from big box store. They come in white, pink, orange and I write on the flag with a marker. Would like to see you do a video on seed saving. Great videos doing a binge watch now.

Good information as usual. As for me, I don't label anything. I know. I do keep track of what varieties are out in the garden. From there it is easy to figure what is what from sight. But my garden is tiny compared to yours.
Haha- I wondered if I would get questioned on that! I filmed the intro/outro less then a week ago and it was 45F at 8am. This morning, at the same time, it was 81-- highs in the 90s for the next several days!
When we have a big gathering we always have lots of plastic knives left over... The spoons and forks get used but the knives stay... And multiply.
I peel off a piece of masking tape with the plant variety written on it and wrap it around the knife handle... Then stick it in the dirt. Easy to find and read. And reusable many times.

It seemed trendy for a while. I tried it but had not-so-good results. Good work, Mrs. Elf...always enjoy the videos :)

@@GrowfullywithJenna if don’t already have goodwill has for about $2. You can get hundreds of markers any size you want that way. Reusable. Wipe markings with 91% alcohol and presto brand new.
This year I’ve been using old miniblinds, which easily snap to the desired size. Sharpies seem to fade for me, so I have switched to using Garden Markers and they’re great. Not sure what I’ll do when the blinds run out…

I have been using mini blind color samplers (smaller/precut), on the recommendation of someone who commented on a video about plant markers by EdibleAcres. Sean from Edible Acres uses a Listo pen (sort of like a wax or grease pencil, but in pen form) and I have done the same on the mini blind markers. That said, the Listo doesn't come off, and now that I've run out of mini blind samples, I ended up buying some small plastic plant markers that I'm using with a regular pencil.

I would like to find a company that makes permanent stake tags. I would like a brushed bronze tag attached to a stained wooden stake with the name of the plant and the day it was planted.
Well it’s been trying times gardening this year Z5a WI. We haven’t had any rain for weeks, last was a tenth on May 19th.
Then we had a FROST last Thursday that NONE of the meteorologists covered! It was Devastating!!! The south garden was somewhat protected I think by trees, but the later plantings out in open in north garden were mostly toast as was the berries and grapes.
I had over 50 each of tomatoes and peppers in because it’s been so dang HOT here. Yesterday 2 different temp sensors registered 103* in the shade. I know we have a microclimate, but come on! I managed to get shade fabric up yesterday and today in both the south and north gardens. It has made a Huge difference already, the radishes actually look happy. All spring veg bolted except peas are looking better under shade.
THEN we had Voles for heavens sake! Never seen one in my life and they soon got evicted! They ate spring bulbs were inside and outside hardware cloth on a new plant-total destruction! YESTERDAY-Ugh! Yes, there’s more- we had a mole go along a long raised bed and IN the bed of newly sprouted green beans and continued over to new carrots in ground, peppers and tomatoes!! He was evicted Promptly this morning!! When it’s dry watch where you water because moles are attracted to those areas. I don’t care if they eat grubs they ruin plants also. We haven’t had moles for years since I used Milky Spore.
So here we fence everything in to protect from wildlife and we get hit with rodents and Now DROUGHT! It’s almost enough to throw the towel in. It’s hard to even look at others lush gardens without cringing over all we’ve suffered. I’m happy they can grow something and have a great climate, but it’s been the worst battle ever from starting seedlings with gnats and aphids which I’ve never had to all the above.
Our chance of rain yesterday was 5 drops-yes, I counted them and today was 10 drops. I was replanting tomatoes and heard thunder and watched the cloud cruise by. My SIL sent a pic that they had puddles not far away😢. Happy for anyone that got that! It’s so dry the clouds go around or dry up.
I’m sure you are experiencing drought also as Accuweather showed this pattern going east.
So on with what the video is about 😊 I tried old mini blinds till I read they may have lead. Then cut up food containers and then plant markers that came with an order that fit under domes which were nice. Plant marker dried up right away and I found Sharpie Extreme and believe that will do. I haven’t found a marker system yet and would be nice to use the seedling marker, but I need them in the tray. So I jot everything down as I plant. If I had markers it would make replacing all those plants a breeze. I have 25 varieties of slicers 3 paste and 7 cherry varieties and just as many peppers because I declared this the year to find the best varieties that do well here and taste great. The Jimmy Nardellos get an A++ for surviving a frost and they look Fantastic! Now if they taste great-clear winner!
I read someone used cut up aluminum cans and engraved the tags and bent them over cages, ect. I will worry about that next year when I’ve chosen the winners-IF WE CAN PRODUCE ANYTHING.
I hope everyone isn’t having as bad a start as us. It’s suppose to be fun and the hose and me are at Extreme odds right now.

I am SO sorry to hear this. I know how very disheartening this can be. It seems like it always works that way- weather stress (especially drought) makes the critter pressure worse, so the gardener gets a double whammy. I hope it relents soon. I can't believe the craziness you are dealing with!!
Great video about a topic I rarely see anyone talk about. I have been using the 4" plastic tags for marking seedlings now for about 3 years and they work better than anything else I tried. As for marking plants outside I tried several types but didn't like how any of them performed so this year I am trying a sign with steel frame 12" long and 1 1/2" X 4" copper plate for writing on. I found a good quality marker called "Garden Marker" made in the UK that does a great job (a little better than the permanent sharpies I tried). Once it is dry (within a few seconds) it won't smear and rubbing alcohol will remove the marker so it can be used again. I will look into the galvanized markers you are using. Got this tip from a horticulturist working for a large nursery in my area and this is what she uses at home. Cut yogurt containers into strips. Then use a laundry Sharpie to write on them. They last very long without fading into oblivion and can be recycled at the end. My favorite containers are from Fage as it is thicker than others.

I just go el cheapo and use tongue depressors for my seedlings, and bought flimsy white plastic stakes for out in the garden from $Tree. Some of the tongue depressors were still good enough to use outside, though.
Do you have any issue with the ink bleeding once the wooden tongue depressors get wet-- that was the trouble I was having with wooden stakes?
Some of mine I ordered and just use the plastic label that came with it.
I planted squash seeds and chose to have just 2 plant's. I didn't label them.
