Hand Wrapped Linen Mat for This Stunning Chinese Painting

- This stunning painting is by artist Hong Zhu An and it is the word dragon in cursive script. Most people don’t recognize the word in that form because cursive script is almost a lost art.
Modern Chinese write in the standard or traditional script which looks totally different.
Standard script for dragon looks like this 龙.
Our client wanted a specific look and feel for this piece. We went with a white frame and we didn’t have exactly what she wanted for the mat board so Nick custom wrapped a museum rag mat board with linen purchased from a local shop.
It was quite the project!

Hi Shantel, it is a wheat starch glue that you mix. I use a version called pure methyl cellulose. Unlike regular wheat starch paste, it is pre-sterilized and when you mix it with distilled water, it will last for several weeks. It is made by Lineco and you might be able to get it at an art supply store or online. It is the gold standard in adhesives for artwork because it is easily reversible, by art conservators.
