    Hey Scott great video and thanks for your enthusiasm on Summit.
    Just spotted you wondering why the new delay modes are called "TimeModes" so I figured a little context might be helpful on that feature.
    Basically this came about because we (Novation) really wanted to add a longer delay time to the engine. Due to the nature of the way Chris H originally programmed the delay it wasn't possible to add more time to the delay as it was so he (and Danny - the product designer) came up with a really neat idea.... half the sample rate and you could get double the time from the delay.
    Being Chris though he didn't stop there, he added 4 sample rate reductions Double/Treble/Quad and my fave the HexVLofFI (VERY LOFI!) this one gives you six times more 'Time' on the delay lines but at the expense of the sample rate. This is also what give it it's wonderful crunchy and LoFi sound too. It's also great to use as an 8.5 second looper too!
    Also the Timemodes are nice ratios so playing around with the setting can give you some nice performable harmonic relationships as well.
    Speaking personally, his passing has left a huge hole in my life and I greatly miss my mate (as do the rest of the team) on an almost daily basis.
    It was pretty incredible that Chris managed to pull all this off as and when he did. It was already a masterpiece of a synthesiser and being the absolute genius he was, managed to squeeze even more in before he passed.
    I know its taken some time to get this firmware out there but I hope it has been worth the wait. I think this update and the synth itself is testimony to one of the greatest engineers we have ever had in this field.
    Anyways pleased to hear you're chuffed with the new firmware... I know I am (and Chris would be too).

      Thanks for your words and also we are all missing Chris. Even if we do not as much as you do (most probably) he will be missed by the whole community.
      Can you comment on the remaining bugs? There it the envelope timing bug that is still in there, where the decay time is not matching the decay curve, so that it drops down to sustainlevel the last step?
      Also the Serial Effects routing and esp. the way how the Dry amount is completely stopping it from working: Do you think that is a issue that can get fixed at all? Or is it somewhere in the hardware domain that makes it impossible to fix?
      Appreciate your feedback on this.

      Thanks for taking the time to write!
      I found that performable harmonic relationship trick right away - switch between them while playing, and get instant shifts in pitch - kind of like adjusting the delay time, but in defined, musical steps (based on the ratio between the sample rates).
      I read a couple of interviews with Chris and was so impressed with his breadth of knowledge and technical creativity. Surely a massive loss to our community.
      I hope that many people who might have been scared away from the Summit can now embrace it and learn just what a fantastic instrument it is!

    Thanks Scott! Both for this video and the previous one explaining the bugs. Your original explanation of the bugs is the best summary of the problems I have seen, and now your follow-up confirming the bugs are fixed closes the loop. The Summit has been my desert island synth all along, even with the bugs, but now I can take my DAW to the island as well and properly record and sequence the Summit as a studio synth.

      When I heard it on demo in a shop I must admit I couldn’t describe the Oxford digital ocillztors as analogue.
      But it sound better doing analog replicata sounds which actually sound a lot better than 1 analog voice.
      Personally, I still love the Virus ti, Jp8080.
      Would the peak be superior ti either of those? I thought it just lacked a bit of character compared - but apparently that big airy character I like in those is the supposedly awful sounding digital aliasing. (Doesn’t sound crunchy or brittle to me).

    I was SO close to pulling the trigger on the ASM synth, then, in the blind, I heard the most gorgeous analog brass (strings too) I’ve ever heard! I said, “whatever this all analog synth is, I can’t afford it.” It was the Summit. I canceled my order on the HydraS. I instantly knew this was THE SONICS I’d been chasing for years! And, once upon a time , i owned ‘em all, pretty much!
    Now, I am only able to pick ONE. What would be my one and only Polysynth…to take to the deserted island?
    SUMMIT!
    I may well have to sell my monologue XD, my Typhon, my Nymphes (sacrilege) and my micromonsta 2, just to swing this acquisition.
    YOU, my friend, are exactly, precisely correct: the sound is INDISTINGUISHABLE from ALL ANALOG.

I think they will find a way to fix even that FX issue you described ; you said FX Routing issue might be a design flaw…Ie not fixable. Maybe owners will eventually have to pop the case and install a box and connect it to something…they’ll find a way. I think they will be consumed with satisfying the owners who endured.

    It's great to hear that these issues have finally been fixed. After watching this, I am quite certain I'm going to buy a used Summit very soon. I've been considering it for a while now as my first polyphonic go-to synth. Other contenders at the moment are the Hydrasynth Keyboard and the Prophet Rev2, but the Summit seems like the best allrounder and value-for-money candidate overall, especially since the Hydra has no analogue components and I really love truly analogue characteristics in synths. So, you've convinced me!

    • @ScottsSynthStuff

      The Hydrasynth is all digital, but it can effectively and convincingly emulate analog synths. But you definitely will not be sorry about buying a Summit!

      @sidetrackwalker Рік тому

      @@ScottsSynthStuff Thanks! Yes, it was a close call, and the polytouch is a huge selling point for the Hydra, of course (as is the much lower price!). One of the key factors that sold me on the Summit in the end is the stereo input that allows you to use it as an outboard fx unit or to add analog colouring to other signals. And while it's not exactly a knob-per-function synth, it does seem more immediate than the Hydra. I've actually ordered a used Summit, by the way; it should arrive any minute now. Exciting!

      @@errorkit Nope, I don't have either. The Summit didn't convince me at all, sound-wise, to be perfectly honest. I ended up going for a b-stock Modal Cobalt8X at about half the price of the Summit and haven't looked back since, it really suits my sonic needs much better and I can thoroughly recommend it. The Hydra is still on top of my wishlist, though, as is a purely analogue polysynth (though that's something for the distant future!). For the time being, though, I'm quite satisfied with my setup and will have to save up for future investments. Besides the Cobalt8X, I'm using the Behringer Model D and Odyssey, Yamaha Reface DX and an original, half-broken Morg M1 alongside some soft synths.

    Hi Scott, Thank you so much for this. I'm one of those who was about to buy a Summit and have held off due to the bugs. I was very happy to get the news of the update today, but I'm disappointed that the envelope bug has not been fixed. I want to order the Summit, but I need to know more about the envelope bug. One thing I want to do on the Summit is to play in Mono mode, using lead patches, with ADSR amp envelopes with short (fast) attack, long decay, zero sustain, and long release (matching the decay). This produces tones that decay gradually until the next note is played (or until allowed to decay smoothly to zero). This occurs whether or not the key is released, because the decay and release are the same.
    This type of envelope works fine on all my synths, including my analog Korg Minilogue XD. I need for this to work on the Summit. The tone needs to decay steadily and smoothly (like the natural decay of a plucked string, or piano note). If the "envelope bug" causes the amp decay to suddenly cut off, or suddenly drop volume, or in any way be other than smooth, it could be a deal killer for me. I need the amp envelop to work as I have described here.
    Scott, can you test this and let me know how it works? I don't know how else I can find out except by buying the unit online, and trying it myself. But that might end up causing a return I would hope to avoid.
    Thank you!

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  2 роки тому

      I didn't think this would be an issue with the Summit, and I was right (I just tried it). The envelopes work just fine. Not only that, you can put it in Mono2 mode if you want, so it's still monophonic, but the previous notes continue to decay and fade away even when you play new notes (instead of silencing the previous note).

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  2 роки тому +1

      @@SkywalkFPV I disagree - both can do pads well, but when I want a lush pad, I go straight to the Summit. If I want a piercing lead, it's the Hydrasynth. If I want a sound that depends on a filter sweep or reverb, Summit for sure. If I want to play a gentle, expressive sound that really needs poly AT, Hydrasynth.
      But if I had to keep only one, it would be the Hydrasynth. It can really do EVERYTHING, and the mod matrix is just massive.

    • @SkywalkFPV
      @SkywalkFPV 2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the knowledge, interesting for sure! Though many people would not buy the ASM if it would not have the Polyphonic AT, because that would be the only real advantage it seems to have over the Summit.. However the Summit does support polyphonic AT! Novation really thought about that, way before ASM delivered there product to the market.. So mad respect for Novation - you can actually send any poly AT signals from other synths directly into the Summit and all patches that support AT on the Summit, then also have the polyphonic AT capabilities! Which is a huge feature Novation offers and is worth more than for example the double headphone jack on the ASM, just to be clear you cannot send any other instruments through the ASM synth.. But I am able to use more headphones with the Novation redirected from a mixer for example.. Just saying I like real features and try to avoid gimmicks, I do not need a touch slider, bright leds or screen that shows the waveform blinking in my eyes.. I think the ASM looks more like a toy where the Novation looks premium and professional like an instrument and actually is the more established player in the world of synthesis.. The Novation also seems more quality build with solid balanced layout and is easy on the eyes.. Comparing is not so easy, but necessary - many people can not afford or justify having two synths or more.. I think the Novation would be the best center piece and I could maybe see the hydra as extension, but not really the other way around.. I believe a true one synth setup needs to be able to make the lush synth sounds, what it is all about to begin with! especially for these premium prices.. I would then use my MP7se digital piano with triple sensor responsive keybed, to make any leads or gentle sounds if I need those into the mix - there are many ways for reaching those secondary goals, but the first one is to find a quality intense sounding synth at the core.. And being able to connect my piano for example, straight to the Novation and route those samples through the synth system, allows for so much possibilities - like explained above, is a huge feature I believe..

    The dry/wet control is there for patch import I believe. You can use the aux outs to have different dry/wet mixes on Summit so it's not necessarily needed.. Agreed it looks buggy, but I think this is less broken than meets the eye.

    • @SerErris
      @SerErris 2 роки тому

      Actually that is what they told us with the sneaked in update in the documentation. However I think and agree with Scott that this is a design failure - a bug. It does not make any sense. Dry control should not cut of the output completely, but just the dry part. Instead it is removing all sound. So it is more like an input attenuator to the effects section and that is just wrong. It is a bad excuse they pulled of. However I still hope that this can get fixed. There is no dry/wet mixes on the aux outs that actually can achieve the same (pure wet is not possible). You can mix dry and wet - yes, but wet is always a combination of dry and wet, not pure wet.

    Hi Scott - Thanks for your educational videos. I have been an admirer of the Summit since it came out, and have considered picking up a used unit. However, before buying any new hardware I always ask myself if I already have hardware/VST that duplicates that sound well enough. I noticed in your video that you have the Summit on a rack just above a Roland Fantom, which I also own. With all the current updates to the Fantom it now has emulations of several Roland analog classes, as well as the new N/zyme wavetable engine. In your opinion, does a Summit bring anything new to your music making that the Fantom doesn't already cover?? Thanks for your thoughts...

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Рік тому +1

      Actually the Summit is over a MODX, not a Fantom (although I do have a Fantom and a Fantom-0).
      The Fantom is very good at emulating Roland sounds, so if you want a Juno or a Jupiter or SH-101 sound, the Fantom is all over that. But the Summit can run rings around it in terms of flexibility and variety of sounds, with hardware oscillators and FM, wavetable capability, and actual analog filters. Not to mention that the Summit's controls were designed for its sound engine, so it's FAR easier to work with than using an emulation of a synth on the Fantom.
      You can get close to Roland-ish sounds from the Summit...but not quite. The Summit sounds more...refined to me.
      That said I've not tried N/zyme, so I can't speak to that.

    Does the FX bug happen in Peak ? I read in a Forum, that it does not affect the Peak. There's a new 2.1 FW

    Now I really want one too. I think it should now be able to simulate an Oberheim?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Рік тому

      It will come close, but you aren't going to get the "fizz" of the Oberheim's continuously state SEM filters. They can pull the cutoff frequency down, but still let a bit of high end through, above the resonance hump. You can do it with a Hydrasynth, with its two filters that can be routed in parallel, and I'm pretty sure you could figure out a way to do it in the Cobalt8, with its morphable filters.

    I am just ready to buy one of these, but there is one thing I really need to know. I looked in the manual but could not find an answer, please help me.
    So 3 envelopes is not many especially for FM stuff (and one of those is eaten up by the amp, so sort of only leaves 2) I was thinking I could use the LFOs as extra envelopes. They have a saw shape that would work for me and I could set the repeats to 1. However is the saw LFO bi-polar or uni-polar? It would only work as an envelope if it is uni-polar. I see no mention in the manual. Thanks in advance if you answer this 😊

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  2 роки тому +1

      You can set it in the mod matrix to affect it bipolar (positive and negative) or positive (where the bottom of the wave is treated as zero). So yes, you can use LFO as an additional envelope in the mod matrix.

      Turn off any midi control changed you aren’t going to use in the synth. If you don’t change patche/ with midi cc turn midi program change off on the synth (for example).
      If you are using a daw, make sure the synth or the daw are t trying to send and receive the same midi cc’s.
      Basically try steam lining the midi messages by turning off everything you won’t ever use, abd making sure that it is t sending abd receiving the sale midi cc’s (hence a midi loop).
      Hope that’s helpful in anyway. 😊

      It could well be a bug, but for example if the synth is sending midi arp data, to the daw and then receiving it back again, it can cause the synth to jam, freeze up or just act very strangely.
      That could be the case for any midi cc as far as I’m aware, but if it’s only doing it on that one patch then that sounds more like a bug or some setting in that particular patch.
      I’m no expert, it gets quite technical so this is just my limited knowledge really.

    I am thinking in getting this Synth, there is a 2.1 firmware update, have you tried it?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Рік тому

      The 2.1 firmware came out just a couple of weeks after 2.0. When 2.0 came out there was a bug in it that caused voice dropping in some instances. 2.1 was a bugfix for it, so you should definitely use 2.1 over 2.0.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff

      Summit can play Peak sounds. Peak can play most Summit single sounds. Peak cannot play Summit Multi sounds. The Summit has filter options that the Peak does not, so there isn't 100% compatibility that way. The factory sounds that come with the two units are completely different.

    Hey. IF I'm a home studio, don't play out, focused on sound design/composing, wouldn't multi-tracking a PEAK kinda get the job done? I mean, with Summit, do you have a DUAL FILTER mode (like a second High Pass) and would THAT not ever be possible ? Just trying to check your thinking as to HOW important the extra Summit features are,, IF bi-timbral is not make or break for me? Bi-timbral would be great Home Entertainment, but I could live without it. Thanks Scott.

    Hey Scott - Brilliant info on the update. I don't have a Peak, not for any of the buggy reasons, but does it not make you wonder how a company can release a product with so many bugs and, obviously, without testing? Novation are not alone as you know. It's been a thing in the software world now for, like, forever, that customers are unpaid beta testers. Seems to be getting that way in the synth world. What do you think?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  2 роки тому +2

      I don't think it's that they are using the public as beta testers...I think there are two reasons. First, the synths, if not externally, at least internally, are becoming incredibly complex. The amount of design and coding that goes into a modern, DSP-powered synth is staggering. Second, there is a constant press to get the product to market, to start recovering the massive ROI to offset the huge development expenses. The market is very competitive right now, so there is also the urgency to get your product out before your competitor's similar product is also released.

    One thing, audio over usb needs to happen

    • @RadekPilich
      @RadekPilich 2 роки тому +1

      Why?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  2 роки тому

      Very unlikely. In most cases, this ability needs to be designed into the hardware from the outset. It's not typically the kind of thing that can be added after the fact via firmware. Not only are USB chipsets different, it's possible (probable) that the ARM controller responsible for USB functionality doesn't even have access to the audio stream, which is handled by the FPGA.

    • @SerErris
      @SerErris 2 роки тому

      Impossible ... the audio out is getting out in the analog realm. There is no way in the ARM processor that it can get feed back to the USB port. So not gonna happen. Also not a design flaw. It is simply not designed as such, never was, never advertised as such.

    • @SerErris
      @SerErris 2 роки тому

      @@ScottsSynthStuff Yes, you are 100% correct, it does not have any access to the audio out, which is sitting in the analog domain. After the effects it goes into the mixer and then into the master volume for the output. And if you bypass the effects, it will actually completely live in analog domain after the signal leaves the FPGA from the OSC. So it is simply not possible and the quality you could achieve by putting an ADC at the output to sample the output again and output via USB then is by far worse quality as good audio interfaces.
      This is not a digital synth and therefore the original signal does not exist in digital form. The feature would make sense in a digital synth, but not in a hybrid or even pure analog one.
