@@Cwronaga216 wrong! All Militaries have non combat roles, if they are apart of a genocide machine taking out entire planets in one go then they are valid Targets. Genuine question as I served nearly a Decade in the Army in a Combat Role in Combat in Afghanistan and Iraq multiple times so interested to understand how people view the roles in this fictional world of a Rebellion and a Galactic Dictatorship. Thanks!
@@ReanuKeevesAus I said it's technically a war crime by definition it wasn't however saying that it wasn't Justified because in the case of the Death Star the collateral damage of non-combatants was inevitable and was simply a return War Crime After the empire did the same thing on Alderaan. Intentionally and knowingly killing noncombatant Personnel is by definition a war crime according to our real-world military Doctrine and as far as I'm aware the Star Wars Universe does have similar rules regarding war crimes even if the Empire itself disregards them and even the Republic in the case of Anakin and Obi-Wan using false surrender to win battles. War crimes have specific definition as stated within the Geneva Convention intentionally killing non-combatants and unarmed personnel is a war crime by technical definition. 1) I always had a theory that Anakin never promoted Rex because it would allow there to be a "Legion Commander" to organize the detachments and direct them, so Rex could be alongside Anakin and not be burdened with logistics and command and control 2) if they remained pure clones of Fett, the journal having the timeline but the narrators sounding identical, even into the Imperial times would fit your explanation of the irregularity
Huh. When you put it like that, it does kinda make sense why Appo would be the one made Brigadier Commander after Ahsoka left instead of Rex, seeing as Appo was a lot more proficient at handling logistics/command-and-control.
I was under the impression that Rex wasn’t (initially) promoted to Senior Commander as Ahsoka, being a Jedi Commander, technically held that role, making her officially the 501st’s second-in-command and Rex the third-in-command
Technically speaking, Rex wasn't even 3rd-in-command. His only de-jure command was that of the 332nd, Torrent Company. But since he was Anakin's clone liasion officer, and the fact that Ahsoka was a literal child when she intially became Brigadier Commander, Rex might as well have been 2nd-in-command of the whole brigade.
Not that time that was a different mission. The recruitment of his secret apprentice came 10 years before the battle of yavin. The mission where appo lost his life was part of the hunt for several Jedi survivors, including roan shryne, and olee starstone.
I’ve just come back to Star Wars after 2 years. Great to see all these channels I watched during our 2019 lockdown thriving today. Gonna head over to some other channels just to see what they’ve got.
If the nick name legion is just for elite units, then the 501st is a corps since in Star Wars tcw it is mentioned that the 501st had within its ranks three brigades, therefore making it a corps. Tcw is both canon in the EU and disney canon so yeah it’s a corps
Blessed be the 501st. Sucks to be the now lost and forgotten 212th, 41st, 327th, 21st, and so many more units. Seriously, whatever happened to them after the Clone Wars, both in Legends (especially) and the Alt-universe (ongoing lore, yes, but still)? Addendum: Love the implication that a contingency of the 501st were there on Endor, by the way. Legends lore (as shown on Wookieepedia) sure missed out putting such a group in that influential battle.
@@michaelandreipalon359 I'd imagine most of them were either assigned to suppressing Separatist holdouts and other anti-Imperial uprisings or became glorified military police in the Mid and Outer Rims.
The different detachments theory makes a lot more sense in the end. After all, how are we to tell it's the same clone? They all have the same voice after all. Plus, it seems more meaningful & sentimental if the journal was written by several different clones.
I feel like Darth Vader himself would say something similar. Considering what he said to krennic… and if you read the novelization of revenge of the Sith, the separatist counselors
The 501st Legion held the title of elite unit from the time it formed all the way into the Legacy Era. I actually viewed the 501st Journal as a form of Imperial Propaganda, serving as a form of recruiting for the post-Hoth 501st legion. (Note: The journal makes up the campaign of the 2005 BF2, but ends at Hoth, even though the 501st were present at later battles.) This is also due to the fact that some of their missions likely belonged to other units. (Mygetto, Felucia, Kashyyk and Utapau) This can also be backed up by the fact that BF2 contradicts Dark Forces. In Dark Forces, Kyle Katarn steals the Death Star plans from an Imperial research outpost, while, in BF2, a group of Rebels who escaped from the Death Star prisons stole the plans, transmitted them to the Polis Masa group, who then sent it to Princess Leia. Since Dark Forces had a more fluid storyline, I'm going to say that's what happened. I'm not saying that all missions are fictional, just that some of the missions feel like they belonged to other units, or that they're made up.
Those aren’t really discrepancies though. In the real world it’s actually fairly common for different detachments of soldiers from one unit to deploy under the authority of another. So there absolutely could have been 501st troopers in all of these battles without much each. As for the Death Star thing, keep in mind that in Legends the Rebel Alliance received different bits of the Death Star plans from numerous different sources.
To be fair, journal of 501st could very well be different people, as there isn't much to imply it's just one clone. Every clone has the same voice afterall.
The 501st of the GAR needed to use dirty tactics because they couldn't face the might of the Confederacy. Vader's Fist was able to use conventional warfare well enough to not need too. That is the difference
@@theempiredidnothingwrong3227 Assassinations aren't dirty tactics. And they didn't do it to win battles either, the assassination attempt was merely delayed by an auto turret grid that was shut down by troops who were supposed occupy the city *after* she was killed, the actual number of troops involved and how explosive the conflicts were were exaggerated for gameplay.

rex was the most badass clone trooper, not to mention the most important one in all of starwars history, he had served in countless battles, and was basically a god among the clones. his iconic dual blaster pistols style was forever etched into many starwars the clonewars fans.
But make sure to say that some battles and events from the likes of TCW 2008 might be extremely incompatible to Legends lore, and vice versa. One example: where Anakin and Obi-Wan were before they were sent to help out in the Battle of Coruscant (though to be honest, even Labyrinth of Evil and Clone Wars 2003 were differing on that in Legends). (At least three days before the NYCC, and thirteen days before the return. You know what I mean, right?)
@@michaelandreipalon359 Yeah, I know, for 2003 there were at The Battle of Nelvaan before going to Coruscant, and in Labyright of Evil it was the Recapture of Tythe before Coruscant. So even before the New Canon introduced the Battle of Yarbana the timeline was already confusing.
501ST JOURNAL. "In the waning months of the Clone Wars, the 501st faced missions critical to the agenda of Chancellor Palpatine. When we arrived at the bombed out ruins of Mygeeto, our Jedi commander believed we had been sent to take out a droid energy collector. What Ki-Adi-Mundi didn't know however was that our unit of the 501st was really after an experimental Mygeetan power source, that the Chancellor wanted for his superlaser. Keeping Mundi in the dark wasn't easy; the Jedi had become increasingly wary of the Chancellor's doings, and was on the lookout for the slightest hint of treachery. Just like the rest of them though, he never caught whiff of what was really going on, until it was far too late."
I like your idea that Battlefront 2's missions are all being fought by different squads...and it's easy to write off because all the narrators would sound the same (Or it could be Rex relaying the stories told by his compatriots)...and every time you die, you take control of a different trooper anyway, so it makes sense...
Disney has no good canon regarding the 501st. The only thing remotely cool was when the actual 501st fan group were hired as extras in the season 1 finale of the Mandalorian
Canon, Legends it’s still fantasy and I get to choose which one feels right to me, thats why I’m going to stick with the timeline that isn’t garbage, thank you very much.
for me i took BOTH campaigns of the OG battlefront games and turned them into a story from Naboo to Endor ive had a character go from battle to battle, war to war, faction to faction i gave him the orignal name of Unit 0 as droids in that game where named Unit # with 0 not being there Unit 0 to CT-7320 to ST-7320 to the "man" known as Zero to eventually become a bounty hunter, he REALY is old OOM Security Droid by the time the empire falls if Zero though where to survive to the legacy era and continue to replace parts and exchange droid models he would be the last remninant of 4 whole armys over a hundred years later
The newest and the most mysterious question in Star Wars: Why Skywalker did not promote Captain Rex to Commander earlier until the near end of the Clones Wars?
I think because Rex’s combat skills were unmatched, and he wasn’t quite as much of a tactical planner as he was a front liner. Therefore, captain worked better. A similar situation I could use is if you’ve watched attack on Titan. Levi definitely is the strongest soldier, yet he is also put as captain, because he works better as a front liner. But was there even a commander for the 501st during that time? It is still weird.
So what made them so special during the CW except the high casualties? They often won but were decimated so often that it could barely grow into an elite unit. It had a few great names in it's ranks but what else?
the survivors would have so much combat experience that they could use to train newbies that these newbies would be quickly brought up to speed. SF forces often take heavy losses. but are still elite operators due to the wealth of experience their survivors have. ive worked with SF too often to not have picked up on their heavy losses, as they also often operate all but alone in enemy territory, and in small groups, meaning that if they are discovered, every bad guy with a gun is dropped on their heads.
Well one way the journal of the 501st could work is simply they’re clones they’d all have the same face and voice and rather than hearing from one clones perceptive we’re hearing multiple clones perceptive and it’s all being read by the same voice….since they’d all have the same voice
With Rex being promoted to Commander to lead the 332nd when the Legion splits, my theory is that Appo was also promoted to lead the remaining 501st at the same time as Rex, making so Appo never out ranked Rex, but rather shared the same Rank
13:15 Isn't it? All the clones have the same voice, and the second mission is to take part in the battle over Coruscant, after which, as a result of serious losses in GRA, the legion may have been divided into smaller units to serve in different sectors, then perhaps it is not so impossible?
Wouldn't it be more probable that the Journal of the 501st could be 100% accurate due to the fact they're clones? It may not necessarily be the same guy, but different clones on each Battlefront?
It's not explicitly mentioned that the 501st was present on Endor. The 501st journal ends after Hoth and various battles occurred after that. The next BF game that covers the Battle of Endor never mentions the 501st on the ground. It's possible they were either left on Hoth as an occupational force (highly unlikely) or was dispatched to Sullust as a distractionary force during the battle of Endor. Which means the unit may have survived the war mostly intact until divied up by the Imperial Remnants.
Oh that just annoys the crap out of me. Historically regiments of never exceeded 1,000 men under one colonel. Thinking that Rex can handle directly commanding more than 9,000 men in only four regiments. Also Brigade is supposed to represent not only the regiments but everyone else like support staff artillery medical personnel. Those brigades are then sorted into cores which are under the command of generals
I used to adhere to the idea that Canon and Legends stuff could happen in the same timeline, but that’s become harder lately. Besides Star Wars Rebels and the Sequel Trilogy outright being impossible to place in Legends since they tell events far differently, there’s simply the fact that the Clone Wars tv show is also incompatible with Legends novels and comics set in the time period. So to me, the 501st is just a regular clone trooper unit with an outstanding record during the Clone Wars and one of Vader’s two fists, the other fist being the 1st Legion. They took their orders from Anakin/Vader, Ahsoka, Rex, Appo, Piett, and Veers, but not Palpatine. Their Legend’s counterpart is certainly quite interesting and some of it may still be compatible with Canon, but I’ll take the Canon version of the 501st over the Legends one.

Something I would like to note with the 501st journal. They are all clones and they sound the same, could it be that it's actually a different clone talking each time but they all served as 501st clones?

Don't forget that her boyfriend Jagged Fel knew of the Empire of the Hand's continued existence as of 44 ABY and brought them in as reinforcements during his power struggle with Natasi Daala for control of the Imperial Remnant. Perhaps the 501st served there as well.

Idk if the journal said he participated in ALL the battles, but the thing is he could have started the journal in the last days of the war, with perhaps the legion being split. We almost never see him and skywalker with each other other than in knight fall. So I think it’s likely he DID participate in those battles and the other battles that occurred during that time also happened. And yes it was legends and all but it still could’ve reasonably happened
Even if you were a clone in a legion, there's thousands of clones in a legion, anakin would reasonable push out with mostly the same squads, chances are if you fight besides anakins in 1 battle, you'd fight alongside him in the next to

Watching this video made me imagine getting transferred or having to work with another legion and having jokes made about you because you're a "famous 501st trooper". Thinking about what's going on in the background of the movies and shows is a nice deep dive. When watching bad batch I wonder how many people were thinking that knightfall was going on whilst force 99 were on kamino
Me. When they were receiving Palpatine's Rise of the New Order speech, the back of my mind was just like, "Anakin, Appo and the 501st just wiped out thousands of Jedi on Coruscant, and Rex and Ahsoka just barely escaped getting killed with Torrent Company on RAS Tribunal."
The narrator of The Journal isn't the same guy throughout. They are all clones, and they all talk to each other. The Journal is a remembrance told by a clone from the points of view of ALL the clones who were at those battles, and then relayed as after the fact info of the mission you play.
I beleive the could make an entire televivision series dedicated to the 501st Legion and I think it cold be amazing, almost like a war drama, dark and gritty to show, almost like Band of Brothers but for the 501st Legion
The moment I hear special treatment and kaminoans in the same sentence, I feel a sense of foreboding

@@ReanuKeevesAus There were however a lot of non-combat personnel such as engineers, technicians, scientists, doctors, cooks, and many other maintenance role personnel just there for the pension. Although loyal they were noncombatants and therefore the destruction of the death star is still "technically" a war crime. Though rules get blurry when the military target is the size of a small moon.
@@Cwronaga216 wrong! All Militaries have non combat roles, if they are apart of a genocide machine taking out entire planets in one go then they are valid Targets. It's not a War Crime to destroy the Death Star!
What gives you the impression that it's a War Crime?
Now considering the entire surface of the Moon size station was a valid military Target and the deaths of noncombatant personnel could not be avoided You could argue there is a loophole and because of what happened on Alderaan it's unlikely anyone would care. But it's still technically by definition a war crime also the Rebellion is technically by definition a terrorist organization even if they were in the right and Justified since not all Rebel activity was heroic by any means especially when it comes to the partisan group or wetwork operations like those committed by individuals like Cassian Andor and his crew
@@Cwronaga216it’s not a warcrime if you win -some random rebel soldier
1) I always had a theory that Anakin never promoted Rex because it would allow there to be a "Legion Commander" to organize the detachments and direct them, so Rex could be alongside Anakin and not be burdened with logistics and command and control
2) if they remained pure clones of Fett, the journal having the timeline but the narrators sounding identical, even into the Imperial times would fit your explanation of the irregularity
Huh. When you put it like that, it does kinda make sense why Appo would be the one made Brigadier Commander after Ahsoka left instead of Rex, seeing as Appo was a lot more proficient at handling logistics/command-and-control.
@@occam7382 I guess Rex was always the Mad Dog of the 501st.
Technically the 501st lives on into the sequel era with one of their troops being cryogenicly frozen
And on Kashyyyk, Vader took a small boy as his secret apprentice
Not that time that was a different mission. The recruitment of his secret apprentice came 10 years before the battle of yavin. The mission where appo lost his life was part of the hunt for several Jedi survivors, including roan shryne, and olee starstone.

If the nick name legion is just for elite units, then the 501st is a corps since in Star Wars tcw it is mentioned that the 501st had within its ranks three brigades, therefore making it a corps. Tcw is both canon in the EU and disney canon so yeah it’s a corps

The different detachments theory makes a lot more sense in the end. After all, how are we to tell it's the same clone? They all have the same voice after all. Plus, it seems more meaningful & sentimental if the journal was written by several different clones.
"Not even they could walk off a vaders fisting"
Oh god that sentance killed me.
The Imperial 501st literally preformed assassinations and whole sail genocides how are those not dirty tactics.

If you're looking for longer video ideas, how about one on the complete history of The Clone Wars, or at least the Outer Rim Sieges?
But make sure to say that some battles and events from the likes of TCW 2008 might be extremely incompatible to Legends lore, and vice versa.

The newest and the most mysterious question in Star Wars: Why Skywalker did not promote Captain Rex to Commander earlier until the near end of the Clones Wars?
everyone knew rex was boss no matter what
I think because Rex’s combat skills were unmatched, and he wasn’t quite as much of a tactical planner as he was a front liner. Therefore, captain worked better.
A similar situation I could use is if you’ve watched attack on Titan. Levi definitely is the strongest soldier, yet he is also put as captain, because he works better as a front liner.
But was there even a commander for the 501st during that time? It is still weird.

501st Legion: The best military unit
This just makes me sad, my poor clone boys
Well one way the journal of the 501st could work is simply they’re clones they’d all have the same face and voice and rather than hearing from one clones perceptive we’re hearing multiple clones perceptive and it’s all being read by the same voice….since they’d all have the same voice
With Rex being promoted to Commander to lead the 332nd when the Legion splits, my theory is that Appo was also promoted to lead the remaining 501st at the same time as Rex, making so Appo never out ranked Rex, but rather shared the same Rank
They dunked on the galaxy is a great description automatic like
13:15 Isn't it? All the clones have the same voice, and the second mission is to take part in the battle over Coruscant, after which, as a result of serious losses in GRA, the legion may have been divided into smaller units to serve in different sectors, then perhaps it is not so impossible?
501st - Vader's Fist
502nd - Vader's Middle Finger

Wouldn't it be more probable that the Journal of the 501st could be 100% accurate due to the fact they're clones? It may not necessarily be the same guy, but different clones on each Battlefront?
My favorite clone legion
501st unorthodox methods are inspiring
not so fun fact:
a clone company is 144 total troops
on Umbara, the 501st lost more than an entire company's worth of clones
I wonder if the 501 was actually able to hit their targets. What was their fire accuracy rate?
501st Journal has entered the chat
