As a Sabre fan, Good luck to Columbus next season with Torts,..... the team he has there is a lot tougher and fits what he will want to do better than when he was in Vancouver, where it was a disaster and not a match.
He'd be perfect for your favorite team. The Flyers have always found a way to stick it to the Rangers (by far and away my favorite team in all of sports for 25 years). You eliminated us in 1974 because not only did you have skilled players and guys who can fight, but Snider's team epitomized what N. American hockey has always been about since the days of Eddie Shore. He learned that from the beat downs the Flyers took from the Blues before the Broad Street Bullies became the Broad Street Bullies. The Flyers wore out the Rangers physically. Enforcers like Dave Shultz and Gary Dornhoefer made other teams scared to the point where they didn't even have to use their fists all the time. The threat of using them would do. Teams like the Rangers feared them under Emile Francis. You guys won another Cup in 1975 before 2 teams lead by better coaches than Francis (Bowman and Arbour) realized it wouldn't simply take good goal tending and finess (as Francis believed would wear teams out and win a Cup) to dethrown the Broad Street Bullies. It took a combination of skill, size, physical play, and guys who weren't afraid of Shultz and Dornhoefer. That's why the Rangers (despite having hall of fame players at each position) never won a Cup in the 70's or 80's for that matter. Players like Larry "big bird" Robinson, Dough Risebrough, Bob Nystrom, and Clarke Gillies were not afraid of Shultz and Dornhoefer and the Flyers knew it (as do you probably). My NY Rangers never caught on to this concept until 94'. As far as fighting goes it's not only about using your fists, it's the threat of using them if the opponent wants to intimidate and scare your team's most skilled players.

I agree. Mike Keenan was harsh on players in a similar manner but was run out of the league. Just look at Chris Pronger's transformation in St. Louis. All due to Iron Mike. I like this speech. I love Torts. No matter.what anybody says, he is the real deal. If an NHL player can't handle this, it's probably because his mommy has been telling him how great he is his whole life. Welcome to reality, and reality's name is Tortorella.
Anyone who knocks a coach like Torts for being vocal when players aren't playing to the level they should isn't worthy. I'd have him in Toronto as Leafs coach anytime. Our Front Office needs to wake up and allow coaches to be able to speak out when players aren't competing and not have to apologize as they did to our last Coach Sheldon Keefe who should never have left, the playoff exits are on the players not him. The culture of the Leafs needs to be made more accountable when the big dollar players aren't scoring to their potential.
+Yahiko25 If you watch 24CH youll see that therrien doesnt have the outburts that torts has. Plus unlike torts benching johansen, therrien will never bench his best player
+The Canadian Dude Tell that to PK Subban. Also Torts and other coaches who does yell like Hitchcock, D. Sutter, and Carlyle have won cups in the end. Therrien on the other hand has not.
Why? MDA beings a positive energy to the team unlike this psycho; did you see what he did to the canucks? Dantoni brings out the best in every guy on our roster.
Columbus has themselves a great hockey coach in Tortorella. After seeing the shit-show defense of late of the Rangers, I am starting to miss his defensive style of coaching which is very effective at winning games.
The series detailed the build up for the 2012 Winter Classic between the Flyers and the Rangers. So they had a camera crew follow both teams in the games leading up to that
I was standing in the doorway of this room when it was filmed. There were about five of us, all huddled right out of view of the stationary cam. I was a PA, carrying spare batteries and memory cards for one of the guys with an ENG. I also got to watch the game up against the glass from right next to the player benches, with 45,000 people in the stands. It was a pretty wild day. This was the first time I ever heard an NHL coach talk to his team. I actually didn't like Tortorella much then, and at the time, this speech didn't do much for my opinion of him. But I've come around on him now.
+Zack K Seth Jones-Murray and Werenski will be a very good blue line for years to come, all young and all will fit what Torts will wanna do. And up front they have some good forwards I really like, Jenner, Atkinson, Wennberg, Saad, Dubinsky, and even Hartnell can still go at his age. They got some really good prospects in Milano, and Bjorkstrand which hopefully they can contribute in a couple years. All they need is that elite Jack Eichel type franchise centerman which hopefully they can get in the draft if they win the lottery.
So this is what Johnny the Tortoise is like? This dude would make the Leafs a reality show, definitely a good pick if Carlyle ever gets fired. Honestly, someone needs to serve as a tough and strict discipline officer in their organization, I would personally love to hear of this guy screaming down the locker room in the ACC over some of their ugly games. Honestly, some of us don't like having strict teachers, but then you realize that they take your success seriously and you start to listen, then they start praising you for working hard and point you out as a good example. I mean really, it's nearly been 50 damn years for the Leafs, enough is enough, it's time to rebuild this team, even if it means having Torts take the bench.
A lot of coaches are that way nowadays. If you want to coach a team, you have to be tough on your players and get them to listen to you. The main thing you need is a good game plan. Tortorella always had a great game plan and if something went wrong, he would do whatever it took to fix it.
Actually he rather turned Tampon Bay to a bad team than Columbus to good one. Still many to do. Players don't like city of Columbus itself and want to leave to more entertaining NY, Miami, LA, Vegas.
@@C3lloman Weren't they in like 3rd or 4th in their conference on January 2019? They were definitely a team that was inside the bubble throughtout the year so I don't know what you're referring to by them not making it. Maybe popular perception at the beginning of the year would have been that they wouldn't make it. The Columbus GM went all in by acquiring Duchene and Dzingel because they were considered a playoff team at that time.
Crazy thing is, in one of the angles of the shot, we see Michael Del Zotto. At the time of this scene, the Rangers were playing the Blues at *formerly* Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Del Zotto was with New York at this filming Who would think that 7 years after this scene was shot, Del Zotto would in fact be a member of the St. Louis Blues' 2019 Stanley Cup Champions team???
I think he's a great coach. He reminds me of a modern day Mike Keenan. Really great for a few years but never stays with a club for that long i guess his style wears thin on either the GM, Owner or the players almost identical to the way Keenan was.
@@bobtwichew3103 yeah kind of what i said. I dont know how old u are but if u remember Mike Keenan he was the same way and coaches like these are really great for a few years then players and management get sick of them then they go to another team. Coaches like this get results but they are constantly going to different teams. Peter Lavulette ( killed the spelling of that ) is also kind of like that.
Oh I'm old enough. I remember Keenan coaching the Flyers before he coached The Blueshirts to the Cup and the bolt to St. Louis. Did you ever see Mike Keenan and Jeff Golillie in the same place?
I don’t know if that’s a good comparison. Keenan’s way was to get the players angry at him as a form of motivation; Torts’ approach is more tough, but fair. Even though Torts was yelling he wasn’t demeaning his guys or belittling them. He was just being very matter of fact with them.
If only the Chicago Bears had a coach like Tortorella. We need a coach that would knock some sense into these guys and get them to play and work together to make it all the way to the top
no he was not acting, he was mad because the team was draging there asses the first period and was just enforcing his points but he does often get like this, he is a good coach but doesnt take crap
good job torts ..... he coulda asked for the TV's too scram, but in his mind he was prolly thinking , NO keep those cameras rolling, that way it was all up too them he did his part now you deliver the goods, now that's hockey.
That's exactly what a coach is supposed to do when his team isn't playing at an acceptable level. You light a fire under their asses in no uncertain terms and you get them going.

He’s right at how hard that team played. Only a few years ago the league was different and provided much physicality that is sorely lacking today.
My absolutely love John Tortorella
I want him coach the habs
Michel therrien is very very very similar to tortorella
+Phcx Not really therrien is much more patient and conservative than torts
+The Canadian Dude Oh Therrien is much like Torts. I have seen him get into his players ears and give them tough love.
Therrien on the other hand has not.
one of my all time favorite coaches.....love the speech.
Even though it’s 8 years old I just want that drink cart flying. 😂
He’s awesome when he gets mad
Unfortunately my Rangers are going to miss this this year. Guy was a nut, but he motivated. Going to be a long year for my Rangers.
This current rangers need needs him back desperately
I know this isn’t NHL related but I wish my team (Houston Rockets) have a coach like John Tortorella.
NBA....whats that?
Why? MDA beings a positive energy to the team unlike this psycho; did you see what he did to the canucks? Dantoni brings out the best in every guy on our roster.
I think we have a good chance this year with Torts. His mellow attitude will help tame the Nucks for sure.
he should coach the oilers
+Tang526 Fuck that.
+Tang526 I would love that! You'd see defense for once.
He will kill the Oilers
+Mathew Prasad true
bump
“C’mon Herb! No one’s quittin’ heir”
Columbus has themselves a great hockey coach in Tortorella. After seeing the shit-show defense of late of the Rangers, I am starting to miss his defensive style of coaching which is very effective at winning games.
This is the type of Coach the NY Rangers need again. I give him the most credit for developing the NY Rangers last Stanley Cup Finals Team in 2014.
Pretty sure I gave that same speech to my kids about cleaning up after themselves.
I could watch Torts yell all day and not get tired of it.
1:23 "If you are not gonna be stiff you are not gonna play"...weird strat but, ok
One of the most tempermental coaches in NHL history but also one of the best
1:17 The Subtitles...
Fucking great coach.
0:59 Sens need a Strong voice like that. Enough of soft coaches please.
Green will tell them how it is
He’s Flyers coach now.
Tortorella is a good coach. I would play for him.
according to the subtitle its a Flyers vs Rangers game but they show Rangers vs STL?
Rangers need him rn
You know for something that last 2-3 minute max feels like 10 minutes when I’m in the locker room listening to the coach
He's gonna help turn my Jackets around
+Zack K No He's not
+Zack K Seth Jones-Murray and Werenski will be a very good blue line for years to come, all young and all will fit what Torts will wanna do.
TheIncredibleMalk71 lol, you were wrong
yeah he was lol
That prediction though...
One of the best coaches of all time. Extremely passionate
0:09 oh look it's the guy who will sweep you in the playoffs 3 years from now.
I’m studying for MCAT, and watching this video just inspired me!
Good luck! I rewatch this video a lot
I love when Torts is angry.
SO THIS IS WHAT JOHNNY
Sums up the rangers season in 2022/23 so far as well.
Jon Cooper would just softly address the team and say : “we are playing a heck of a game we just gotta stay focused “
lmao
While chewing his gum
Sadly that's the way he does it we do need torts back or someone with his mentality .
@@matthewmickles1997 Torts has won one playoff series in the last five years his coached, so let's keep things in perspective.
A lot of coaches are that way nowadays. If you want to coach a team, you have to be tough on your players and get them to listen to you. The main thing you need is a good game plan. Tortorella always had a great game plan and if something went wrong, he would do whatever it took to fix it.
Life long Blackhawk fan in Chicago. This guy was great. Wish he was here !
Gotta admit, he turned Columbus into a good team
They still shit
Actually he rather turned Tampon Bay to a bad team than Columbus to good one. Still many to do. Players don't like city of Columbus itself and want to leave to more entertaining NY, Miami, LA, Vegas.
Or the GM's trades at the deadline did, it looked for quite a while that Columbus wouldn't even make the playoffs.
Well that didn’t age well😂
Crazy thing is, in one of the angles of the shot, we see Michael Del Zotto. At the time of this scene, the Rangers were playing the Blues at *formerly* Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Del Zotto was with New York at this filming
Who would think that 7 years after this scene was shot, Del Zotto would in fact be a member of the St.
I definitely think it works for a while. Especially when the team is winning. It has to wear on you after a while. I couldn't take that every night.
Who won the game?
Ny 9-0
1:37 that quote keeps me motivating
I’m going full Torts in my next staff meeting, the mostly female team will surely respond well
Tell em if they ain’t gonna be stiff they ain’t gonna work.
Was anyone else waiting for him to throw a Gatorade
i was waiting for him to throw ALL the gatorade
As a Ranger fan, I don't miss him....
bgainesDM1 Their kicking butt!!
Peace
bgainesDM1 he just has a good goalie
Dunkilo Stonk same lmao he's an asshole
bgainesDM1 We all knew it wouldn't last. After their streak, what are they now? Like 8-11?
Man, that even made me a little fired up🤣
Please coach the leafs
Seems like Babcock is doing well enough.
ghost_curse LOOOOOL
Damn this came out 12 year ago wtf
was he acting for this hbo thing? or was it how he usually acts?
no he was not acting, he was mad because the team was draging there asses the first period and was just enforcing his points but he does often get like this, he is a good coach but doesnt take crap
He’s usually keyed up like this.
Note how he subtly went from negative to positive - a great motivational speech.
did they end up winning this game?
No, it was their last chance not to lose the playoff against the Devils
@@wolffromthejungle3894 wrong
Sure wish my Red Wings had a coach like this. They needed this kind of speech all season.
good job torts ..... he coulda asked for the TV's too scram, but in his mind he was prolly thinking , NO keep those cameras rolling, that way it was all up too them he did his part now you deliver the goods, now that's hockey.
Solid coach in my book. Passion is needed...so is skill. He's got both.
I miss torts
Really need this from Laviolette right now
Common guys, "stiffen up" lol
That's exactly what a coach is supposed to do when his team isn't playing at an acceptable level. You light a fire under their asses in no uncertain terms and you get them going.
I wanna see babcock now lol
It would be a lot different.
He would get his point across for sure without all the vulgarity. He’s much more respected because of it.
Nathaniel Fang Babcock would not take any blame and he would probably say something like “we played great, they just wanted to win more than us”
