  • M42 is one of the most popular classic manual focus 35mm systems, so are there any bargains left? (Minor corrections: 1. The mark on the Helios lens indicates production at the Belomo plant, not KMZ, and 2. the stainless steel Copal Square shutter is vertically, not horizontally, traveling. I misspoke.)

My cheap favourite 35mm system is cosina. I have the ct-1. Fully mechanical copal square shutter. K-mount. Small and lightweight. Made from plastic basically but still high quality. The first version that I have has that match needle light meter. It is one of those old ones that used 1.35v batteries so you need to take that into account. Later versions of the camera switched to led indicator.

Yes, Cosina's CT series was the basis for the Nikon FM10, Konica TCX, Olympus OM2000 and several other well-known re-brands.

Hi Brian, great video. The bargains are out there but I find more success at car boot sales here in the UK rather than on-line. Meyer - Optic Gorlitz Orestor 135mm f2.8 15 blade for 5 GBP when the same stall wanted 30 GBP for a Helios 44-2. For M42 bodies in the UK the Praktica MTL3's are pretty common and robust with their vertical running mechanical shutters. The metering electronics are a weak point though as they get older. However they probably didn't expect these cameras to still be in use some 40 years later.

Check out the Pentacon 29mm 2.8 for a reasonably priced m42 wide angle. Very sharp in the center dreamy soft corners wide open. All around nice stopped down.

Aliexpress has lens and body caps for about half the price of amazon if your still looking for caps. You can find just about every brand of cap with the exception of KO (still can't find any of those- I should find a 3D printer for some). I just picked up a mint Praktica L2 in mint condition with a pentacon 50. Looking forward to snapping off some frames and I love the unconventional placement of the shutter release button.

Cool! I recently picked up a Praktica LTL with a broken light meter, so its functionally identical to your L2.

I use a Vivitar series 1 28mm 1.9 on my Ricoh Singlex TLS. Excellent results.
I have a Pentax Spotmatic with the 55mm 1.8 super Takumar lens. My favourite 50 ish lens.
I had a 100mm f2. 8 Pentacon lens. Poor build quality. Optically superb. Lovely bokeh. It fell apart in my hands. I bought a Pentax super Takumar 135mm f3. 5 instead. Superb build quality. Excellent results.

My recommendation definitely is the Ricoh 50 mm 1:1.7 that came with the TLS 401 (which is a great camera too). It takes beautiful pictures and is really cheap.

M42 definitely viable for a beginner. Recently bought a cosina hi-lite 202 for €30 with the Russian lenses (helios 44 amd industar 50-2) are really nice, sharp and extremely cheap to buy. As far as I know Cosina made some of the voigtlander rangefinders so the quality is quite good

The Ricoh Singlex TLS is my favourite M42 camera, should it be lighter and it would be the perfect camera. I generally like the feel of all the Praktica 'L' cameras as well. Regarding the Pentacon, the one I have at the moment is one of my go to 50/1.8 lens. However, I'll admit the quality is not very consistent even among units from the same version. Maybe that's the reason behind the mixed reviews online.
I love your videos and share many of your opinions. Keep them coming as long as you have fun, we appreciate it.

A really lovely m42 lens I've been enjoying a lot recently is indeed a Takumar, however it's the 50mm f1.8 rather than the f1.4.
The prices are much more favourable than the f1.4 version, the glass is superb and they're not too bulky at all. It's interesting that you mention the Zeiss Jena, as I've had some bad luck with them.
They're good lenses, but the build quality is pretty poor. When I did a rebuild on mine, I noticed a lot of nicks and notches on the helicoid thread, which I think might have been grit getting into it. It's regreased and turning, but it's not that light.
Compared to the Takumar f1.8, it's just no competition. The Pancolar 50mm f1.8 is going for way more than the Takumar, and honestly, I'd rate the Takumar far better if you can find them at a good price. It's a far better build.

I currently do the majority of my film shooting with a budget m42 setup.
Zenit EM - found for $30 in almost unused condition. Everything works shockingly well.
Helios 44 - got it off a broken Zenit TTL in a thrift store for $10
    Mir-1B - $50 at a used camera store
Jupiter 9 - $100 on ebay for one with good glass but crappy everything else. I CLA'd the lens myself (very easy with this lens) and it works great
All and all I'm about $200 in and it churns out amazing quality while covering some good focal lengths (37mm, 58mm, 85mm)
K-mount is EXCELLENT as a budget system as long as you are okay not actually buying things that say 'Pentax' on them (hell even some Pentax stuff is still dirt cheap). Ricoh made what I think is THE most underrated 35mm SLR ever made in the Ricoh XR-P, a manual focus SLR that trumps the Nikon F3 in terms of features. This is a body with stupendously accurate meter, 1/2000, 3 program modes, 95% viewfinder, push-button illumination for the meter, aperture visible in viewfinder, additional left handed shutter button, self timer, Exposure compensation dial, meters up to iso 3200 (12800 if you use exposure comp), and easy to find batteries. You can still find them for $50. Plus, the Rikenon-P 50mm f1.4 they made around the same time is a SHOCKLINGLY good lens. Can also be had for peanuts.

There are some very good, budget M42 camera systems out there. For example the Hanimex and Chinon CX, versions of the Pentax Spotmatic. There are also the Chinon CM series of M42 cameras, and the Practika cameras from the DDR.
In terms of lenses, I've been able to find good prices for lenses like the Helios 44M-4 (cheaper than 44-2). I also have a nice Vivitar auto 135mm f/2.8, bought for $20, and a less desirable but still very sharp Super Takumar 35mm f/3.5.

Thank you so much for your videos! I recently found one of these dirty and neglected at a Goodwill and picked it up to get the film.
Your videos got me up and running and gave me a crash course with this new camera .
I have one question I don’t know if you’d be able to help me or not but my shutter account does not reset. Do you have a suggestion on how to fix that?

    • @BriansPhotoShow
      @BriansPhotoShow  5 місяців тому

It sounds like your frame counter mechanism is broken. In all likelihood, even if you could find a qualified technician, the cost of the repair would exceed the value of the camera. If you bought it just for the film, then the camera is free. If it were me, I'd just enjoy it as it is and give it away to a student when I tire of it.

    Really appreciated this video.
There are many cheap interesting M42 lenses, low prices that won't probably last for a long time. My favourite m42 bodies are a Cosina Hi Lite, almost identical to your Ricoh, and a Praktica TL1000. Among the others I also got a Fujica st701, very nice camera but it lacks that nice copal square shutter, unfortunately.
You should try more Russian and third party lenses, the pancake Industar 50-2 for example, or the 61L/Z for a star shaped bokeh, the Jupiter 37A, the Fujinon 55 1.8 or 2.2. These are just some of mine.
Oh, and also check the Cosinon 50mm 1.7 made by Tomioka. Very cheap if you manage to find one, bokeh is something between swirly Helios 44 and soap bubble Domiplan
My Konica Autoreflex is a T4, I didn't have a chance to test that one yet but looks promising

Tak 135 3.5 are going at reasonable prices. Picked up a Yashinon DX 135 2.8 for $70. The DX 50 1.8s go for under $50

Nice video, nice camera, nice lenses 😍😍😍 I love cheap cameras and lenses, in fact I'm seating next to one, Porst CR-3 Automatic with radioactive X-Fujinon 50mm f1.9 fm lens attached, it's loaded with cheap Proficolor Profi 100 expired film (Expired in 2009), I'm rating it ISO 50, I have taken 5 shot's so far and I have no idea how it turns out 🙂
Thank you for the interesting video and sorry if Google translate mistranslated what I wrote.

My cousin's ex GF gifted me a Nikkormat FT2 (I used to have an FTn back in the seventies.) I put a battery in and there must be a cold contact somewhere in the circuitry as the needle flips sometimes. I'll just use the sunny f/16 rule or my Sekonic Flashmate. I only have one lens with the rabbit ears, my micro-nikkor 55mm.

The shutter setting ring wears out the resistive track behind it, if I recall right. Not an easy fix.
Lovely camera though, I had one for a couple of years when they were new.

Good video as always. But there's one thing you videos lack. In my opinion there is not enough feelings that you get from using a specific camera or a lens. Tell more about your emotions so videos would be less like a Wikipedia articles. Still like your videos. Thank you,
