    Tatang must be given recognition for his contribution to the FMA.

    feints, broken rhythm, timing, accuracy, speed, killer instinct. it's all on display here by a true virtuoso. few men achieve this level of proficiency in any art form

    shows that timing and accuracy beats speed and strength. you have no idea how hard it is to hit a hand in motion. for half the fight he seems to be only targeting the bladed hand. what a great grandmaster.

    Thanks for the video. I've rewatched it like 10 times already and I'm mesmerized by how Tatang can be so swift even though by the making of this video he must be in his 70's or 80's

    tatang once said in an interview that know one wants to fight him. he had so much real life encounter that they lost track of his record (including WW2) he had never been defeated in all his fights. back then someone tried to verify this and found arrest records of tatang in different police precinct. Tatang was the real deal, i could never imagine any other eskrimador who can be place next to his level. he was truly a national treasure...

    I like how he mostly stays in largo range and uses simple technique. Very different from the complex drills you so often see in Filipino Martial Arts (including Kali Ilustrisimo).

    Great to see Master Tups too! His son, Bruce Ricketts would definitely be a great addition to the next generation Ilustrisimo players.

    I notice that Tatang will do replacement steping. but never backs up. Only the illusion of a back step then immediately returning and in your face! it is if he never gives ground. Only the appearance of it!
    Beautiful!

    Tatang is so outstanding that he is untiuchable I regard him one of the greatest Arnus Grandmaster ever after hearing of a stick expert from Indonesia walked in a ring with Tatang and watched Tatang and walked out the ring after never to return that is the tenet of a true Grandmaster

  • @bratkotenka
    @bratkotenka 14 років тому +2

    there are no many videos like this which is real application and show of mastery (note how relaxed and confident Tatang is). most are instructions and scripted simulations ("you do this and i will respond with this..."). just imagine what he is in his prime...

  • @armynurseboy
    @armynurseboy 12 років тому +3

    @MERVILLE3 Yup, and that is the difference between "sport" figting and combat. In sports you can trade shots to earn points without much threat to you, except maybe losing the match. In combat you can't trade shots because even one may be enough to disable or kill you. Real fights don't last more than a few second with weapons.

  • @bratkotenka
    @bratkotenka 14 років тому +2

    the armor and the gloves which are protective gears are alien to Tatang. he asked "ba't sila gumagamit niyan?..." (why are they using that?...") he! he! he! most of the hits taken by the opponent are to the hands, i saw some strikes landing on the cheek, top of the head, and side of the trunk. Tatang received none and the other guy can not be counted as unskilled in Arnis, he is just outclassed by the master.

    he's got an amazing economy of motion, put's only energy in his strikes when necessary. all the other time he just seems to be playing with the stick, though he's so fast with it you can hardly make out his movements... I mean I can follow the opponents movements but Tatangs arm just seems to appear somewhere else suddenly. great skill!

    @chrisarena- my friend who also respects the old man and had some basic kali training calls it the "lutang" (float).

  • @Robdoggh
    @Robdoggh 11 років тому +1

    I'm aware of that. My point is that Tatang's sparring is was much simpler and more streamlined than the drills in his system.

    • @thehunter6915
      @thehunter6915 2 роки тому

      Sir according to Mang Romy Macapagal the living student of Tatang. The oldman doesn't have any type of drill. Because he instinctively hits you where you are on the right moment. Then that particular moment doesn't repeat anymore nonetheless you will be at that measure again at the very exact moment.

    @megaman349 That may apply well to empty hand or even stick fighting but when it comes to the kalis/blade, it is a different matter. It's all about timing and deception. There's very, very little of the taking a shot to get 3 back in blade fighting for the obvious reasons. Even when comes to stick fighting, the real stick is the kammagong or bahi not rattan. Kammagong will break your arm or even kill you, make no mistake.

    It really annoys me that I keep coming across Arnisadors who claim that "there are no blocks" or "there is no defense" and sometimes even advocate for the really risky jump attack when you have people like Grandmaster Tatang clearly using defense and counter attacks in the footage.

    @bratkotenka I think its more respect and admiration slighting his hand rather than being outclassed or defeated. i don't care who you are master or not when in the later years you just cant move or react as if you were 25 again thats just not the case. if the younger fighter put more pressure and actually tried with true fighting intent he would most likely come out on top and that's just basic biological fact. respect and honor are more important than taking down an old respected master.

    • @hubertjosephposadas2643
      @hubertjosephposadas2643 3 роки тому

      May be you are right. However it cannot be denied that there were instances of Tatang beating up younger fighters and even 3 holdup men in a jeep at his old age.
      On some occassions such as when he beat up a disrespectful foreign student it was witnessed by Tony Diego and Coach Arnold Narzo.
