I was lucky to have internship opportunity in Kaiga Nuclear power plant, Karnataka , also when i was there one of unit was shut down due to which we got lucky to go inside control room , Near Alternator omg it was awesome experience cant describe in words , & one thing i observed was each & every employee was skilled i mean never seen so much skilled employees in any energy sector , Just got chills by watching this video.
How did you get the internship? Is there any special exam for it?

Great Job India! You are doing a fantastic job in Nuclear Power. I hope that my country (USA) will get over the unfounded fear of nuclear energy and once again build more power plants. Nothing else makes so much sense. The current power plants were designed so long ago I am sure that a safe solution is now feasible. I was particularly impressed with the process of refueling while in operation and keeping the plant running for long periods of time. We could do that too, if we just would. Keep up the good work my Indian friends.

It's not possible to dump nuclear waste. You need electricity to control the spent nuclear waste drums. More plants means more waste.

It's a copy of a Canadian design. Far advanced from most of the American designs. Perfect for breading fuel, can be fueled with multiple fuels and used to make radioisotopes
India is rich in Thorium fuel for 1000 of years. This is a good combination with the heavy water system. India will have more people then China soon. so they need clean power and say goodby to oil and coal. and drive arround in EV's
It's not clean. Nothing is clean. Everything has its drawbacks. Solar Power? Unavailable at night and kills birds. Wind Mills? Kills Birds and causes Much sound pollution and less amount of energy and high cost. Nuclear Power? Nuclear Waste, High Set-up costs, High cost of Maintenance, needs expensive fuel and some other stuff. We can't completely rely on nuclear power but it has its place too but not in its current form.

Thanks for posting. Just saw this today. I am a film maker specialised in Nuclear Science and Technology. I have produced 48 films during 2003-2013 right from Uranium Mining to Experimental Nuclear Reactor and Power reactors and Pokhran.
Tarapur 1 and 2 when US refused to give nuclear fuel for this reactor on the grounds that its design life is not within norms. I produced film took camera with crew during shut down at high radioactive areas to shoot how remotely “Core Shroud Inspection “ takes place and indigenously done by Indian scientist. This was a thorough proof for IAEA and US that though old the reactor is still in perfect condition. When I was shooting.. work of above reactors Tarapur 3 and 4 was going on and I did shot construction and development of new project right from laying its foundation.

Patrick EH I am not sure if you saw the complete video but towards the end of the show they did mention about using Thorium as a stage 3 fuel. After US India is the only country which has the highest research paper publication on thorium and Tarapur is the only facility in the world where all three stage reactors(U235,U238,Th232) are functioning together. Also India has it's first commercial fast reactor running making it the worlds most advaced nation in this field of nuclear science, India had presented it's latest design for their next generation thorium reactors back in 2014 which would take care of 30% of India's energy needs by 2025 (40% from renewal) and also it was the only country that had shown full support and was first of the signatories of the Paris Climate Aggrement.
Also India has already started working on the long term plans to use nuclear fusion as it's future source of energy, and guess where is it getting Healium 3 for it? The moon! yes India (and also China) are looking towards mining moon for Healium3 that would fuel the nation practically for thousands of year. All this coming from a country that was a British colony not long ago suffering degradation, been looted and wealth plundered off it's shore to the "Developed" and "Civilized" country of Great Britian for 200 years so much so by making one of the richest country in the world when britain arrived to it's shore (24% of world GDP) to one of the poorest (2% of world GDP by the 1950) when they left.
So yes, energy for the future is what India is aiming for! Hope this helps! 😊

There was no effort made to match supply to demand and might I add many countries have invested in the railways without having to be colonised in order to do so. Indian reactors are mainly based on PHWR(pressurised heavy water reactor's) concept same as CANDU reactors...
Yes. We got the tech from Russians and (probably) Canadians. But I think now AHWRs( advanced heavy water reactors, design phase), PFBRs (prototype fast breeder reactors, one made), ADS (accelerator-driven system, MoU with FermiLab and CERN signed for the one of a kind particle accelerator development), MSR (molten salt reactors, studies for fuel and materials being done) are some that are coming up shortly (before 2030s to 2040s).
PFBR makes India's 2nd stage of 3 stage nuclear program. 3rd stage will be thorium reactors.
Now we are transitioning to iphwr made in India

Civilisation’s rejection of Nuclear power was a massive mistake, and the environment has payed dearly for it as we continue to rely on fossil fuels for our electricity
It all went South when Nixon cut funding for stage 2 of the MSRE (Molten Salt Reactor Experiment) because he needed votes in southern California for more high pressure water reactors. Also MSRs would be no good at making bomb goodies like Plutonium.
Stuff like Fukushima and Chernobyl scared people off it.

I remember I was in class 10th, went to an All India Inter-AECS Debate Competition, back then in 2022, and it was me and my ex. We were lucky enough as the principal of AECS Tarapur issues us a site visit permit. Surely it was an educating experience, if anyone has been there, you'd know the small lecture hall reserved for new candidates, radiation exposure unit, the suits made of lead, the theoretical portion that they teach, and the models that was made to show how the reactor's cooldown process happens. The best part was when they took us into the actual nuclear reactor where work was still going on, but I was unfortunate enough, cause the competition was over anyways and we had to leave for the upcoming train as soon as possible...

Less expensive Modularized Thorium Reactors could be a game changer of safer electrical and thermal generators. Desalination and Hydrogen Production, and lower infrastructure costs and lower carbon emissions could be the product of Thorium Reactors.
My keralite friend informed me that in the past, the British/Americans took away HUGE amounts of thorium ore sand in the guise that it was required for their ships ballast !!!

I am also from Kerala.Now also monazite is illegally mined and exported. Guess what it's not only the source of Thorium but also the source of 17 rare earth elements.Yes the same rare earths china stopped supplying which lead to rare elements scarcity recently. And India was top producer of RE till 1960. After that only china made big strides through an even rich mineral called bastnesite or something like that.If India wishes,it can become a leader in rare earth elements and in that way many electronic and clean energy companies which use RE in its manufacturing will start base in India.

What I meant was it's much safer to produce energy thn current nuclear reactor's. I know it's a part of radioactive elements just like uranium.Thorium undergoes a series of nuclear reactions until it eventually emerges as an isotope of uranium called U-233, which will readily split and release energy next time it absorbs a neutron. Thorium is therefore called fertile, whereas U-233 is called fissile.The Th-U fuel cycle does not irradiate Uranium-238 and therefore does not produce transuranic (bigger than uranium) atoms like Plutonium, Americium, Curium, etc. These transuranics are the major health concern of long-term nuclear waste. Thus, Th-U waste will be less toxic on the 10,000+ year time scale.

All nuclear scientist are now required to work for four years at nuclear waste facilities before the commencement of their careers!
Looks like the production of warheads Plutonium and Tritium for hydrogen bombs is in full swing there. These types of reactors are used for that.
We have dedicated reactors for that weapons production. These ones are under IAEA safeguards.
We have another reactor which produces weapons grade nuclear materials civillian reactors are monitored by IAEA

GE does not design or build thorium reactors, only the more dangerous reactors are what they enjoy creating like the really dangerous reactors in Japan that will eventually kill and sicken many people and destroy a hell of a lot of healthy fish in all the oceans of this planet and the people who depend on them for food.

You clearly don't understand how risk works, but that's okay. You also don't understand the research done after Fukushima, but I doubt you read any of the primary scholarly literature before forming your opinion. Also I think their PRISM reactor is better than thorium anyways. It's like comparing big rigs to a hummer, they both have different advantages.

It amazes me how afraid americans are about nuclear power when coal, oil, and natural gas put out far more pollutants than any nuclear power plants. We've yet to have a single MAJOR radiological event in either use or transport.

However due to our talent we have managed to speak multiple language including English but i do't think any one of western country even speak indian language with such proficiency .

I agree with you bro but I have a different opinion over it... The reason that made us weak in subjects like phy, Che, bio,mat is we are not supposed to study our subjects for marks instead we should learn and get experienced with what we Learn that too only based on once own talent

Alright just read once my comment and try to catch my point.
You can speak good English fine but it doesn't mean most of people speak English well .we all have native language and one more thing if any Indian can fluent in English it doesn't mean his/her native language is English .although this is a plus point but not necessary .
Nice to see a lot of people taking interest in the topic specially from outside the country but to really judge this facility one needs to have basic knowledge of science hope to have to have it from their experts

and as far as basic hygiene norms, Indians are more prone to cleanness than many others. BUT if you saying about "use of toilet" which I am sure you want to say. then yes there are still big gap. BUT again India built 10 million toilets per year so that problem should go in coming years too.

brayo144 I am not familiar with the situation in Michigan, but I think both are different countries with different need . we must decide, should we take 1-2 % chance of nuclear power plant failure or sustain growth and emitting billions of tones of green house gas everyday, while destroying essential resources.

As cool as nuclear energy is (and it is very cool) people tend to mystify it. At the end of the day, it is just using water to spin shafts to do work. Something humans have been doing for thousands and thousands of years. It's just a much newer method of heating up the water.
