  • In this video I talk about the issues garment workers face such as abuse, sexual harassment, unfair wages, etc. Even though I try to mainly focus on positive stories and impacts, I think it's also important to discuss issues like these.

    you literally made my day! I am from Russia, and here woman's day is all about sexism, beauty and fashion trends as a must for every woman. and since yesterday I fell so upset because of all traditions in my country. and now I see you, talking about really important topic, about another side of fashion industry. thank you for everything, you are doing incredible work!

    After watching "The True Cost" documentary about a year ago, I had started supporting companies like Everlane. It's very sad the things that can go on in those factories 😔 and sadly other settings too.

      Thank you for putting together a list of companies to buy from! I really love cute and pink clothing so this is going to be tough for me to switch things around haha. I'll share this video with my friends!

    I really appreciate you making this video. It's a great reminder that all of my work to shop second hand or ethical companies for me and my kids and my husband is worth the effort. Our decisions effect a lot of people, and that should be considered in every purchase we make. Thanks for the reminder😊

    Just watching your videos motivates and encourages me to avoid the stores I don't want to support. I just want to thank you for that. I work in retail, around many other retailers that I know have bad practices, and sometimes it's a real fight to keep myself from going in and looking around. Your videos give me the motivation to hold to avoiding them as much as possible. ...now if only there were other options between walmart vs amazon for certain things in my area, because they're both terrible, but many local shops just don't carry certain essentials. :(

    Thank you for working to spread the message & sharing the importance of ethical fashion. The majority of clothes I purchase are second hand but your videos inspire me to find ethical brands for those items that I prefer to purchase new (bras, underwear & sleepwear). Thank you again!

    I m from dhaka,bangladesh..here labor cost is very low so lots of garments factory has established .. there are many garments workers who intentionally involve in doing bad things. but its really painful if good people suffer..

      Thanks Anita, I appreciate that 💚 I really wish these videos would get more views, unfortunately this kind of video always gets the lowest views on my channel :( It's discouraging and I'm not totally sure why, but I think they're important and at least some people watch them so I'll keep making them!

    Good on You and Better World Shopper are good apps for finding brands that are sustainable and ethical. I hate brands that claim to support and empower people, in particular women, but their idea of empowering people and women does not include people of color and other minorities!! I wish more brands, yes, sustainable and ethical ones included, would be more inclusive and not just showcase thin, white women. We still have a lot of work to do! Thanks for making this video!!

    Really great video, we all need to be aware of these things! There's a book that just came out called 'Harvest of Thorns' by Corbin Addison. It's a fictional story, but it touches on all of the issues you talked about today. Its heartbreaking, but a good read.

    I know most of your information was based on women working in Asia but I find that women working in Eastern Europe get similar treatment. The working conditions might be better and they have unions but they are paid below minimum wage or sometimes not paid at all for months of work. basically, any woman involved in fashion industry that is on the lower branches gets exploited.

    Thank you for sharing the more difficult side of slow fashion. I care for my clothes and like buying timeless styles so I usually end up wearing my clothes until they're worn out ;). Also I bought a pair of jeans a couple of months ago from Levi's and this particular style (high rise wedgie) is loomed and cut in one of their originally factories in North Carolina! Yay! Not quite brave enough to order pants online (like MUD jeans) yet.

    I had no idea about the terrible statistics of women being abused and raped in conjunction with factories. I had no idea that there was a link between prostitution and the garment industry off to watch the video you shared.
    Thank you for opening my eyes

    Many thanks for being so inspiring in your videos. I started two years ago with a capsule wardrobe and this was just the beginning of a great journey, I have learnt a lot from people like you and feel much more conscious and connected with the people who work in the garment industry. I knew that the situation of these workers was not good but somehow it took me some time to realise that we can change this indeed, at the end we decide where to buy, same goes for food, cosmetics, etc. it's been hard with makeup and it's being really hard with plastic but at least I'm trying now. Thank you

    I went vegan a year and a half ago in order to both fix my health and live a more ethically sound life. I have wanted to apply this same thing to the clothing I wear, although I am finding it difficult as a currently plus sized woman losing weight, to find clothing that is made both ethically and in my size. I buy very rarely these days in order to make my support of the terrible system kept to a minimum and try to only buy pieces I can mix and match and will last me. I really want to make the switch, but do not know of any ethical brands that produce fashion in my size. Any help would be amazing!

    I was wondering how you feel about making your own clothes? So buying and sewing patterns yourself. Would this be just as bad as buying clothing if you don't know how it is sourced? Do you know of any fabric makers that sell fair trade and eco friendly fabrics? I'd love to know.

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  7 років тому +1

      I think it's wonderful to make your own clothes! While finding ethically sourced fabric can be difficult and is not always possible, making your own clothes has so many ethical/sustainable benefits. Getting fabrics secondhand either through thrift stores or fabric exchanges (there are often sewing groups who will sell or giveaway fabric they're not using) can be a great option. Offset Warehouse is a UK based company that sells ethical and sustainable fabrics. In the US there's Organic Cotton Plus which has a lot of US made, small mill fabrics. Ethical Fashion Forum also has a list of suppliers, but they often have higher minimums for ordering.

    Hi, I think it is "funny" when women I talk to are disgusted by how the clothes are made, but than go to H@M zara, or Pepco. And buy T-shirt for 2€. I started to be awear of my clothing and now I still have to buy som things from these stores too. But I try to buy one piece at time, whitch is from slow fashion and I slowly build my closet with slow fashion brands from Slovakia or at least from europe.

    Thanks for this video. I read this article recently and was wondering your thoughts on it: qz.com/920561/conscious-consumerism-is-a-lie-heres-a-better-way-to-help-save-the-world/?. The article is focused more on environmentalism and sustainability than human rights, and it's pretty US focused, but I'm wondering if you have any ideas on more systemic ways of change when it comes to fashion. I've tried to be a conscious consumerism for quite some time but am now facing the fact that it's really not enough at the rate we (as a society) are going.

    What are some of the brands that do this?

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  7 років тому

      The majority of brands unfortunately don't seem to know what's actually going on in their factories and supply chains.
      If you want to avoid this look for brands that have strict ethical policies or are fair trade certified. I have a video more about researching brands ua-cam.com/video/_cbFcSauVBc/v-deo.html&t and a playlist about shopping for ethical/sustainable fashion ua-cam.com/video/Y9sGX7DwkaQ/v-deo.html
