This is some raw/ uncut footage of me using my scythe to cut hay. I have a shorter, edited video available. Click the link in the video. I feel that we have lost out by generally forgetting about the scythe. There is nothing better than working with a scythe. No noisy motors or smelly smells, only the swish of the blade and the noise of the birds.
The next two links are for my other Haymaking Videos.

There are days when I come home or I am on the road and watch this and after it's done I'm profoundly relaxed. Thank you.
Your dog certainly knows to try and keep clear. Listening to the scythe almost makes the traffic noise disappear too.
I love this. I find this so peaceful and relaxing to watch. Very nice.
He is still using too much force, and not coming fully out with the swing. The scythe needs some pinning.
by experience ik for a fact this strains ur arms so i rlly respect you for being able to get so much area covered (my lawn isnt half as big as this field.)
This field is around 0.4 acre and it took me about three hours but I was also shooting video and so on.
I found borrowing my friend's scythe, the long blade version, was a lot easier. Once you get that sweep right it is all home and hosed...and you get to see the fruits of your labours. He first lent me the shorter blade. The long one is less of a workout.
"Remember the past to create a better present and a sustainable future" - what a great motto !
15:42 With that said, is your snath / blade angle not too open ? Close it a bit and see if it does not help.
Great video series! Do you have any problems with vermin in your hay fields?
+Walker Rodriguez I did have a few mice in the field. I think my dog did more damage digging for them than they did. Every year is different and the vermin seem to ebb and flow. I pray for many good years to come.
I have had a few mice in my field but not enough of them to really be a problem. My dog tries to dig them out and then it became a problem. Every year is different for vermin and it is always a good idea to prepare for that year when they move in.
oooh longer version yay!!
What do you notice when you look at yourself mowing? To me it looks as if this snath is too short for the way you mow.
Awesome video! How long did it take you, total, to scythe this field? and how big is this field?
How often do you have to sharpen it?
I sharpen mine about every 7 minutes all depending on what your cutting really
Does it leave the hay spread out enough to dry, or is there a need to spread the hay out a little bit better for drying?
It does for all but the heaviest patches. Or the spots where the ground is really wet.
But it was fun doing it too.
Makes you want to have 10 kids for help, so the local lord won't kick you out.
Where can I buy a scythe? I can't seem to find any.
Thanks
+Josef theradiogeek scythesupply.org is a good place to start. That is where I bought my scythe. scytheworks.ca has some really neat blades and practical info. Let me know how it goes!
