Interesting observation. You generally rarely actually busted out laughing during this show (this was not Lucille Ball stand-up, sitcom) but instead chuckled to yourself after a stretch. Look at how the show was gutsy, cutting edge, not afraid of introducing controversial, even disturbing original material. Mary Hartman's complex personality, with its touches of paranoia and neurotic behavior, but capable of a great deal of caring love, made this show so different and fresh. But it figures. Shows like this so often don't have great appeal for the uneducated, unsophisticated masses, surreal, offbeat humor doesn't interest the average viewer unfortunately. Mary Hartman lasted how many seasons? One. Look at other original ideas of soap operas such as Twin Peaks...how long did it last? Two seasons. And yet other soap operas with such ordinary day-to-day affairs and lives of humans go on and on for years. Guiding Light, Days of Our Lives....etc. etc. ho, hum, yawn.

The ironical thing is that today, 45 years later, about 90% of the people I converse with are essentially Mary Hartmans. The only thing missing is the floor wax and an actual female even concerned with it.

No, she was more of a ('70s film reference) "Stepford" wife, sheepley tranced into numbness by the daily yet forever mundanity of her housewife-in-pumpkinshell confined existence.

Now I realize that the two actresses (groupies) in 200 Motels (Frank Zappa) were doing these two (impressions). That must have been Frank's idea. If that wasn't the intention, it sure is a coincidence. Who out there knows what I'm talking about?
