I recently discovered your channel and you are already one of the best UA-camrs I have ever come across. As an Indian, I am really looking forward to your next video on Indian cinema.
throwing this out there for fun... so my mom was not a cultured person, a kind, caring, compassionate one, but never really interested in the outside world... she saw Godzilla at some point and has spent the rest of her life insisting Mothra was one of the coolest characters she'd ever seen, and that Rodan was also ok. Just a weird thing... she really thinks Mothra is awesome. My mom who can't name anything Sci-fi or fantasy, can somehow draw Mothra from memory.
It's a giant moth and, in general, a "pretty butterfly" a person like what you make her sound like would probably adore. My mother is similar except she's watched (and still is) dozens of sci-fi movies. She just cannot change and the same thing she loved or hated 10 years ago has the exact same effect on her now, it's kind of weird, cgi movies never changed anything about her way of thinking in regards to cinema.
If i recall correctly, some of these "good children movies" were intended to be watched by family, some of them rated G, but regardless, this video is on point on how to make something that are good to make people revisit even if we grow out past the childhood. Good job.
Maybe that is the thing - if you make a movie having in mind only children, lets say up to 10yo enjoying it, you kinda shot yourself in the foot - you set yourself a limit that anything beneath the surface or any more cultural references, contexts, subtler messages etc are gonna be missed because "kids be kids" and they may just... not know things. But having a surface level entertainment while may be alright is just always worse than having it with some depth, with a more complex story (given it is well constructed ofc). That's why i personally think to make a good children's movie you should think of the whole family wanting to enjoy the piece, because then you leave the space for everyone on age spectrum to take something out of it.
Fun Fact: In kaiju movie lore, Mothra has an affinity for twins. In Rebirth of Mothra, she has two fairy twins supporting her, and their connection to Mothra explains why they give a lot of exposition. Years later, in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Zhang Ziyi's character, Dr. Chen, is the one most knowledgable of kaiju. She reveals she has a twin, and her twin can be seen when Mothra comes out of the waterfall. When Mothra comes in to help Godzilla in that movie, it zooms in on Dr. Chen, alluding some form of connection to the monster.
I think a good example of a kaiju movie made for kids is Gamera the Brave. Although it disappointed some fans at the time expecting something darker along the lines of the Shusuke Kaneko trilogy the characters are well written and acted and the story is quite moving.
In fairness, a lot of movies are made with the belief that *adults* are dumb and spoiled and need constant stimulation… Mothra 3 looks great for a lazy Sunday, I’m definitely going to check it out! Excellent vid!
This also reminds me about Nobita and the Kingdom of Cloud. Doraemon erected some kind of cloud buster cannon to fight the kingdom of cloud, but he never intended to use it and so he was genuinely surprised and guilt-ridden after he found out that the poachers actually used the cannon to melt the clouds and in process killed countless kingdom citizens. This at first went over my head, but as I grew older I realized that Doraemon was speaking about weapon of mass destruction as a tool for deterrence. This is the stuff you'd often see in Metal Gear series, but it is even more prevalent since Peace Walker.
It's always a joy for me to see someone know Doraemon. As I dig more less popular work of Fujiko F Fujio, the more I realise many of his manga tackle lots of different topics and themes. Some are surprisingly too advanced given the period of his time.
The mothra trilogy was my childhood. Got the collection on blu ray a while back. Was the reason why I loved the US Godzilla King of Monsters movie a few years ago, the fact that they kept the twin, and the Mothra theme song. lol great video!
I could be bias or else. But I feel like at least 3 things why "it's just a kid movies" may happen: 1. Either from older generations having enough toward struggles (could be from WWI or II trauma but has to recheck history lesson again) & making "comfort zone" after all those traumas (which maybe just maybe why banning was born). Thus, why the stereoype is trendy even until now. 2. Either because marketing pov than in directing story pov due to "making some catchy & extravagant alike drama musical" is so much easier to produce than making "heartfelt & depthful touching tales to inspire viewers". Which is a pretty common in old days until nowadays because of branding needed to keep alive so the consumers will still keep in touch (the examples are name every show/ film that you feel like it's getting less exciting now even though it's not always bad). Which is at some point is fair enough cause "we're talking about business here" but can be dissapointing if you're some old fans who dive into the worldbuilding, characters, & other reasons more to compare with new things. 3. Making great films are harder & not everyone successfuly can make it. And all of these can't just be achieve with high quality cgi because "people want to watch the story, not to see it as detailize painting". So of course it takes some tremendous efforts to make things right. Not to mention filmmakers have to compete with one another & even face the big brands. Which is no wonder I think alot of bad films are produced just so that they can "at least put a name on somethinh before slowly becoming better". The pacing is just competitive (& again with the business mindset). So as audnices, we should be expected from to see such things like this happen. After all this is like choosing which restaurant has better food than the other & it's our choices to find right things than simply be dissapointed to the makers (although we surely expect better from thems but like besides that, we can't do much more since we're the ones to pick them).
wow!!The amount of tokusatsu movies are being covered here is insane!!I think you should do a tokusatsu in depth video essay and revisit classics like ultraman and kamen rider
I agree with you that movies that treat kids like humans tend to be better, and also that of trilogy Mothra 3 was best. I always really liked Mothra, maybe because she always dies and is reborn which is very dramatic, she’s a mom, and she’s pretty and sparkly. Also, in the earlier films, I think the Miki Saegusa character featured in Mothra movies as well (if I remember correctly), and I always really liked her character a lot. I always assumed all the Toho films were aimed at younger people, teens or kids in their 20s as date movies, since that is when I started really loving them. The Gamera movies and the Mothra trilogy were the only ones I thought were especially for little kids… 😊
Mothra 3 appealed to me in a way very few other films did. It's got some gorgeous design, but more importantly, it didn't act like being normal was better or natural. It didn't insist you'd be popular if you just "became normal". It accepted that adults weren't inherently right or to be reconciled with just for being in charge, but that they were just people, too. It was validating when I needed that.
7:32 did you mention a furzzy creature in the part about the first film? specifically one that juxtaposes with this one that didh't contribute to that plot?
Mothra 3 sounds a lot like the inspiration for Thor: Love & Thunder... Alhough I wish Mothra would have gone back in time to stop Waititi on making that film... 😒 Thanx, great as usual!!!
Mothra 3 was far and away my favorite and I agree how much better each movie got. Mothra Leo, particularly Eternal Mothra, has been my favorite Kaiju since I first saw him and Grand King Ghidorah is the best Ghidorah design we've ever gotten IMO (outside of maybe KotM). Thanks for this retrospective, it was definitely amazing for me back then cause Mothra never got much time to shine on her own.
11:16 and that, is the very reason modern cartoons are bullshit, im not talking about adult cartoons im talking about those playing on CN, i just hope someone can understand this and make cartoons great again.
Have you considered make a video about Gamera? It's mostly nostalgia talking abut I LOVE his movies as a kid. If you have already and I forgot, I apologize.
Huge kaiju nerd here. I really appreciate someone making a serious breakdown of the trilogy & finding the good in them (speaking of serious breakdowns on kaiju movies, does *anybody* know if Brandon at Up From the Depths is okay???). As far as kid-targeted kaiju movies go, I really like Gamera vs Gyaos, Gamera vs Jiger, & Gamera: The Brave. That potshot at the Heisei Godzilla films is not cool, btw; they are much more visually- & tonally-consistent than the Showa or Millennium eras.
I think he is OK. I checked the comments of his last video, about a year ago and according to the commenters, he just took a break from YT. He still posts on Twitter though, so don't worry.
@@Kev701 He said his break was gonna be a few months. It's been more than that. The trilogy was a positive direction for Mothra to shine as she is always overshadowed by Godzy from the latter's movies...oh, and she won against Ghidora.

I'm a kaijuu movie fan but the heisei Mothra trilogy is not really a thing I'm that fond for, but it was nice to hear some nice things about it for once. I particularly thought the first one was the best when I watched it and that it was just okay as well, and the other two were both mediocre at best, but you made good points there. Also, a pretty interesting thing you noted on how the first movie always try to be explosive and bombastic all the time in attempt of keeping children interested while being noisy all the time reminds me that this is, oddly, the very same issue I have with modern Kamen Rider shows, more specifically since Zero-One in 2019: they are always noisy and a lot of stuff has to happen in the same episode and even if there wasn't really much need of action scenes, they will shove one of these in the noisiest way possibly because they have to show the toys available in stores. I mean, this ALWAYS happened with TV tokusatsu shows to some extent, but sometimes it gets too much in the way of the storytelling. Super Sentai and Ultraman kinda found a good balance between these, but Kamen Rider has been in a slump for a while. Revice was overall a good show, but you can totally feel executive meddling got in the way of its good stuff, and I hope Geats don't suffer the same fate. Anyway, good video. I like when you make these videos on kaijuu stuff, even if I happen do disagree with some points.
8:45 I can't help but see the right-wing, nationalistic subtext some kaiju films have (and it becomes more and more prevalent in recent years). In this case, implying that the defenseless bullied protagonist is the embodiment of disarmed post-WWII Japan that needs to stand up for herself by restoring their military forces.
The Son of Godzilla movie, with the bullied little boy visiting Monster Island - I found that watching it with the attitude that it was an unhappy, lonely kid fantasizing, and not a kaiju movie at all, made it kind of a touching story. It does follow some of the guidelines you state here - we spend time seeing his daily life and his relationships with his neighbours, he has a character arc, it’s not loud or overacted. But yes, if I looked at it as a kaiju movie, it’s all the worst aspects of that era.
