A few things for non-HKers watching this.
    1. Even a falt like this can be considered too expensive for some, it's quite costly. HK has the most expensive housing market, and 1 in 7 people live in poverty.
    2. These spaces are perfectly legal, the government fully accepts them, and there aren't many regulations for safety, the few guidelines are from the 70s, which is why you get places with electric cords dangling everywhere.
    3. A flat like this would sometimes be home to a family of people, not just one man.
    4. Sometimes these places are cages... as in, with rusted iron bars, stacked n top of each other, not nearly as nice as this. Capsule hotels have glamourised the situation, the way they're set up could theoretically create a nicer living enviroment, but those capsules are not marketed towards the people that really need them.
    5. HK has one of the highest wealth gaps in the world -you could be living right next door to a massive Gucci store.
    6. I don't think you can compare living in a place like this to living in a car, or something like that because it's still quite hard to fully grasp this through just a video. There are entire buildings, filled with these coffin homes, maybe 50-100 a floor, for 30 floors, with thousands of buildings like that. Families, living on top of each other. You can't just open a window for fresh air, and even if you did, HK doesn't really have "fresh" air, it's all just buildings and people everywhere. It's hot and humid in the summer with no aircon, and freezing in the winter with no heating system, and there's no ventilation. There's the constant noise of other people all around you. You live a life like this and you are invisible to society.
Yes, these people have a roof above their heads... but is it better? These places aren't just coffins because of the size. When you live in one of these, you become invisible to society - people know you're there, but they would rather not think about it. You lay there, wasting away, feeling trapped because you're stuck in such a small room. Come flu season, or pandemics, it's a breeding zone for viruses. It feels hopeless because you know that you're surrounded by people in the exact same position as you, just feet away. Some of them have kids, who have to grow up like this. You're stuck, there's nowhere to go. You go to bed in a dark room, and you awaken in one, with no natural light, no sign of the passage of time, except a new show on the TV, and the arms on your clock have moved.
While I would agree that, physically, this is a better alternative to homelessness, psychologically it could be much worse, with the days upon weeks upon months upon years, living, essentially, in a coffin... it's unbelievable, really, when people try to justify this as a reasonable way of living, that it's similar to living in a car, or on the streets. At the end of the day, this should be a call to action, that even though this is a "better" alternative, it's still a violation of human rights, and there needs to be some way to fix the housing situation, and lessen the wealth gap in HK, and whatever other countries, so that no one has to live a life like this.

@@Instawise Hey thank you so much for the kind words Instawise. Unfortuantely, I have not been able to continue 360VR production in recent years due to financial reasons, so I’ve fallen behind on all the tech. With this particular 360 project I mainly used a regular camera (Sony a7rii with a wide angle lens), then stitched the images together - similar to old school panorama shooting and stitching. I used the a7rii mainly because I thought it would be necessary for the very low-light conditions of the coffin home dwellings. I’m glad I did. For some of the exterior shots I used a Kandao 8K camera, but I’m sure there are many other options now. I’ve used the GoPro Fusion in other projects and found that to be quite good for the price. As for goggles, I liked my little Oculus Go - but there are many new models. Hope this helps.

it's more inhumane on the governments end, if no one rented out coffin homes there would be an enormous homeless problem. The Hong Kong government needs to lease out more land for development so that there can be more affordable residential space for the people, Especially the senior and child populations of the country.

Tell me this: is it better these people live on the street, or at least have running water, a toilet, and a small private space to sleep and keep belongings? I would choose the latter every time...did you not listen to the video at all? There is a housing shortage in Hong Kong, there literally is almost no more housing units available, and the ones that do become available are bought out instantly by rich and upper middle class, as well as foreigners. The way they structure the construction of tenements is part of the problem, as the land is slowly given out by the government at a sort of auction, in small increments every year. I don't know why they do this, thought partly I think it was a way to help combat Chinese mainland businesses from buying them all out. Now that HK has fallen completely to China, I doubt things will get better.

Hong Kong is actually 90% rural with forested hills, valleys, beaches, agricultural land, reservoirs etc.
The population lucky enough to have long roots in the 'New Territories' live in modern houses and refurbished original houses in their ancestral home areas (my father is from NT a place called Lin Ma Hang).
It's might suprise people that China is far from being the most densely populated country in the world, it's population is similar to India but China is three and a half times bigger than India/slightly bigger than the USA but with around 4 times as many people/around a hundred times bigger than England or 45 times bigger than England, Scotland and Wales/able to fit every country in both western and eastern Europe inside of China/half as densely populated than England/similar population density to France, Italy, Germany, etc/able to fit all of East, South East and South Asia including India, Pakistan, Japan, Indonesia, Mongolia, etc etc into the borders of China/etc).
The stereotypical image of a very crowded country is far from the truth but obviously some areas are too hot, too cold, too isolated, etc and have less people per acre/square kilometre/etc whereas the centre of Shanghai, Hong Kong (especially), and other large cities are heavily populated.
The administrative districts are important to remember, because Chinese cities include the actual city, then the suburban areas, then the bigger metropolitan district which are usually much less populated and have mostly adjacent villages and satellite towns and green zones etc.
    So
*the city of Shanghai might be 8 million people in a 640 square kilometre area.
*the suburban areas and the actual city might be 11 million and 1,350 square kilometres area.
*the total administrative population and land area of the semi rural outer villages, new towns, green belts might equal 4 million extra people and 8,700 extra square kilometres of land area in the whole official Shanghai municipal area.
So 15 million people and 1,050 square kilometres as well as 8 million people and 640 square kilometres are both correct but give very different land use percentages, physical areas, geographical features like hills, valleys, etc and the number of people per hectare/acre etc.

For some reason, Google Maps in VR showed me Hong Kong today first. I knew about this, but when I entered the Google Street View, I was shocked and I also cried. I see these high buildings. If you don't look up, it looks quite normal, nice shops and everything, but when you do look up, you see how badly the life condition is. The shows are glamorous and also governmental buildings, everything that makes a lot of money, but normal apartment blocks look really bad. I probably will go back at some point to check out more. It was interesting, but also sad to see.

First time I was there a little girl around 4 years old came took my hand she just wanted my water bottle which I gladly gave her. I didn't know what to do with a little girl living on streets like that brought me to my knees. So we are going to try start an orphanage. But covid is restricting us right now.

In Toronto with rents starting at $1400 and up for a studio apt - lots of seniors are ending up on the streets living in tents in the freezing cold The police come and remove your tents and the homeless is left just sitting in the streets frozen and starving. Brutal. At least Hong Kongers have the option of a coffin apt. A warm place to lie down and sleep. Toronto is also quite dangerous at times with lots of drug users

A good start would be getting people into the empty homes that are already out there, which are no where close to this level

It’s no joke over there. As a grad student who spent a total of two semesters (approx one year), I lived in a 160 sq ft “flat,” in Sheung Wan. Just as it was explained in the video, my place was one of three created when they hacked up the floorpan of a one-bedroom apt. The “they” being one of many rental or real estate businesses that dealt (and still do) exclusively with ex-pats, mostly from the UK, Australia, and the US. For a “shoe-box” w/ a Murphy bed, tiny desk that was almost the exact width and length of a 13” MacBook Pro, a rice-cooker, micro-fridge, and a shower/toilet that was 1.5’ x 5’ (and ran along one side of my flat), I paid $800. Location, location, location! I got used to it, and besides the area I lived in was like the Village in NYC-a diverse array of restaurants and bars, plus a thriving art scene:)

There are days where this would be a nice break from my own reality. Owning a home and 4 acres of land is exhausting sometimes and do not get me wrong, I am extremely grateful for what I have, but it is a lot of hard physical work. There is always something broke or needs work, there is always something happening when you do not think anything else could possibly go wrong and you feel like you are never done. This guy has nothing but time to lay around, but I could not live like this for more then a day or two.
I do wonder what would happen if I traded places with someone in a similar situation to this man for 6 months. Would he just lay around my house smoking and watching TV and let everything like yard work go to crap? Would he even know how to do yard work? No way I could lay around and watch TV all day even if I didn't have what I have, I would go insane.
