Horses for courses, as always. I now take my 5D classic with me when a portrait opportunity is possible. With a 1.8 nifty-fifty, it just nails beautiful photos all the time!

    Great portraits. I have had my 5D MKII for a long while now, along with my now ancient Nikon D800. For the love of god I really don't understand why people are lusting after all those super expensive digital cameras with unnecessarliy high MP sesnors and all those focusing points and modes. I guess as Ansel Adams once remarked " the most important part of a camera is located six inches behind it ." Thank you.

    Great content as usual. There are so many things that you bring up that have been on my mind for years. There’s no reason not to crop if it makes the picture better. I even crop to odd aspect ratios sometimes, which disturb some of the true believers in the golden ratio of photography. Pixels are pointless if they are only there to show imperfection. I would go as far as to say that many of the younger artists I watch on UA-cam and on Instagram are obsessed by detail and sharpness, and would probably do better work with less expensive gear. But I’m a grumpy old guy with too much old gear in the cupboard. I decided to buy another 6D after watching your videos, and now I’m after a 24-70/2.8 as well. I have the 5D classic and the 5DII, but usually I prefer the 1Ds Mk.III for the planned sessions. It has great colours in my honest opinion. The 5’s and 6’s are a lot easier to lug around though.

    This video has shown me that, in a strange way, the 5D mark II is very filmic. And I have always considered the 5D classic as the full-frame that looked most like film. You make the 5D II seem quite appealing. I still own two or maybe three 5D classics--I'm afraid to get rid of them because they were such a revelation for me when I left 35mm and medium format. I still marvel at not having to pay for film.

    These SOOC files were using the Adobe Color camera calibration profile as opposed to the Canon Standard/Neutral camera calibration; is there a reason for it. I would like to see a video from you describing the differences between the camera calibration profile differences. Thanks for the awesome videos. Keep them coming.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 роки тому

      Hi Rudy, the difference with the calibration is very small but for this i kept it at adobe colour because i assume a lot of people dont know about camera profiles. Really though the difference is not there anyway you can hardly see a difference.

    • @RudyGiron
      @RudyGiron 2 роки тому

      @@MartinCastein, actually I can see substantial differences on my Canon 5D Classic between Adobe Color and Canon Standard or Canon Neutral [my preferred calibration profile for editing portraits], especially in the reds and warmer colors. But even the greens and blues change hue when selecting Canon Standard calibration profile in LR. The same is true for the Canon 7D; although less pronounced.
      In your video about the Canon 5D Classic camera settings, I believe, you recommended using the camera neutral profile. Shouldn't we try to match whatever profile we picked on the camera on LR?
      Thanks so much for the valuable information you share with us.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 роки тому +1

      @@RudyGiron It really depends from shoot to shoot, what I mean is, in this shoot the difference is tiny between the profiles. Normally I will look through the profiles and see if i prefer it but they can add contrast. The difference with the neutral profile can be a lot more dramatic but it doesnt always suit. The reason i shoot with neutral on the cameras is so i can see the most dynamic range in the histogram. Ultimately though just choose shoot by shoot what like the look of the most as a starting point. You wont go wrong with any of them. I often like the adobe color look though its a good middle ground profile.

    Thanks for the video! As you may recall, I’ve got the 5DM2 and the EOS-R. I’m gaining ground with the R but I do really enjoy using the 5D mostly because it’s so comfortable. I wish I could have a camera body with the focusing of the R in the body of the 5DM2. I’m still working out how to get sharp pictures from either body but I think it’s coming along. I put the 5D away and force myself to pick up just the R when I want to go practice shoot. It’s nice to see that I can embrace a little higher of an ISO outdoors to keep the shutter speed up. I’ve been in the mistaken mindset that I’ve got to keep the ISO as low as humanly possible in every shoot to get clean pictures. That explains why I’m getting so many blurry pictures, I think. You may not be setting out to teach people how to shoot but for myself at least, you teach me something every time I watch your videos. Thank you!

    Your outdoor photoshoot for the model was much more compelling in terms of composition on spot than it was indoors!! I have been watching your work for a while now and you were stunning in shooting a male model in every respect of portrait photography there!! Your sense of posing, use of light, and the timing were just breathtaking and so were your landscape photographs!! But I don't know if have made this photoshoot for making this video as tutorial but it lacked the fluttering you in others I mentioned!! I shouldn't be a harsh critic of a photographer of your repute, but I must say the photographs indoors could be better composed if you had levelled the camera vertically up or down and so horizontally; you didn't have to lose pixels while cropping!! You said you took the pictures with a telephoto (135mm, probably, if I've not heard it wrong) and in that case you might be struggling for space off the model but couldn't you shoot them with a wider lens and your trouble would be much less for finding what you meant out of the photoshoot?!!

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Рік тому +1

      this is a very very old photoshoot, the shooting horizontal to crop thing is because with people you cant shoot the same image twice and you dont know what the client needs. It helps to crop after, this is why commercial photographers like high megapixel cameras because the images get shot wide to be cropped after depending on adding text or logos or making it a vertical instead. Dont worry about throwing away pixels, that is a youtube idea only. The shoot was for a commercial client and was accepted. The 135 shots didnt really work because we didnt have space and too many people about but i was only trying it out because we had everything we needed already. Hope that helps!

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Dave, thank you! I have a video on this you can see but overall id say the mark 1 has a sort of creamy smooth rendering that feels more film-like but not a copy of film, its very very pleasing for portraits and probably canons best colour in a camera to date. The mark ii is a total shift in colour range but is actually really in its own way but much more earthy and brown toned, also lends itself really well to photographing people and the colour range is probably better for nature/landscape type work too. The mark iii for me gave a much blander rendering but its still good, the images look very very sharp on it almost as if the raw files have been sharpened by the camera, the camera body on the mark iii though is a true modern camera body and focus system is good too and the whole camera feels much better than the 1 and 2 and is a good choice for those making money from photography. The 5dsr i havent used but i had the 5ds it is very good too but the images seem to have a lot more contrast applied to them. For me the mark 1 and 2 stand apart in the images they produce. These cameras are hard to use as you go to the older models though. You should be aware though the focus on the mark 1 and 2 is the same and is pretty awful by modern standards.

    I am a little confused. How are those no edit photos? They look like raw files with adobe profile added in Lightroom. Wouldn’t a jpeg show us no edit photos?

      JPEGs are edited by the camera. Everything is edited to some degree no matter what but the least edited is a raw file straight from camera.

    Sorry if I caused any grief Martin. I didn't realise linking an article would trigger the youtubes.

      Oh don’t worry it just goes into a different list and I forget to check in there, it’s no issue 🙂

    not very good edits at the end (at the beginning, the ones with 0 adjustments are perfect!), IMO; blown highlights and bad WB. Or maybe it's that your monitor is too 'forgiving'...
