Rain Water Harvesting & Urban Farming by PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional RU V Balikpapan

The Program of Rainwater Harvesting and Urban Farming (RAWABENING), is one of the Corporate Social and Responsibility (CSR) programs of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) RU V Balikpapan. This program is designed to address environmental issues, particularly in the Atas Air Village on the coastal area of Margasari Subdistrict.
The densely populated settlement have resulted in an unclean environment, leading to waste accumulation in the water tunnel and limited space for green open space.
Furthermore, the community in Atas Air Village faces limitations in the availability of freshwater. They heavily rely on the local water utility (PDAM) to meet their daily water needs.
Through the RAWABENING program, innovations are implemented to maximize narrow spaces for greening, combined with the utilization of rainwater, known as Rainwater Harvesting (RWH), which reduces the use of PDAM water.
Moreover, the program generates additional value by establishing new micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) that process a portion of the harvest into ready-to-eat food, providing employment opportunities for previously unemployed housewives.
The RAWABENING program also contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 1 - No Poverty, Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, and Goal 13 - Climate Action.
