  • Beach Plum Prunus Maritima
This native flowering shrub is indigenous to the mid atlantic coastal region. Ruled by Venus, belonging to the Rosaceae family. The ornamental flowers are food source for bees and other pollinators. Native Americans and early settlers collected the tart fruit in the late summer and prepared jams and jellies from them. Syllabub was an alchoholic beverage made from beach plums. These plums are delicious and nourishing. They can be pureed and made into vinagrettes, salad dressings, or syrups.
Highly antioxidant, antibacterial, immunomodulating, benefiting the kidney and urinary system, regulating metabolism as well as respiration.
The bitter seeds should not be consumed as they contain amygdalin and prunasin, which break down in water to form hydrocyanic acid which is poisonous in large amounts.
The leaves, also inedible, can be used to make a green grey dye.
