    If it's like my Ford 640 combine (Claas Senator) with the Ford 300 inline six gas engine, it basically has two settings on the throttle lever-- idle and wide open. The throttle cable just moves a stop that pushes the spring-loaded governor extension lever back it idle position. IOW almost no "throttling" the engine with the throttle lever. Course they're made to combine with the engine running wide open, just need idling to put stuff in gear so you don't burn the belts... Later! OL J R :)

    Sorry for chuckling at your experience, been there also. Roaded a combine 60 miles one time with the header on, because the free hauling turned out to be $300 and i didn't have it. Met alot of nice people that trip, some thought I was number 1, but most just smiled and waved. Good luck learning its quirks. Should make you a fine machine with some elbow grease and tinkering.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      I wish hauling this thing home was only $300, but I think I still got a good deal. Oh, I get those finger happy people too, makes me want to keep some rotten eggs at the ready in the cab.

      I knew an extension guy who drove a 2 row cotton picker 525 miles from Lubbock, Texas to Wharton, Texas down on the Gulf Coast... took a few days to accomplish their top speed was about 15 mph downhill LOL:) Trucking costs would have been outrageous...
      My brother thinks I'm nuts because I've driven our Ford tractors (5610S and 2310) 90 miles between our Shiner farm and Needville farm. I told him it's not that bad, only a 6 hour trip, and basically if you're in the field running 6 mph for 12 hours, heck that's 72 miles you've covered right there, and we'd do that day in and day out when we row cropped... Pulled the 14 foot disk and shredder between farms as well a time or two, that's fun because there's a couple bridges you have to cross that are only about 18 feet wide, and one of them is 1/4 mile long at least... sit and wait til nothing's coming and then take off across it! Later! OL J R :)

  • @banditfarmer1900
    @banditfarmer1900 6 років тому +1

    I cant believe that guy hauled it like that ! He is braver than I am ! LOL Now your going to have to get some bigger wagons to keep up with both the NH combines ! I think Brad is going to be really busy keeping up with both of you running ! I hope its a good one for you ! Bandit

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      We just keep collecting more wagons. I would go for a grain truck before bigger wagons. I might haul it wide, but that would after lots of grief from dad and trying to make it a narrower load.

    • @banditfarmer1900
      @banditfarmer1900 6 років тому

      I had small wagons for a long time then got 2 250 bu beds and a 300 bu bed to make it easer to haul to the elevator , Now I haul out on a semi its nice to be able to have a semi load sitting in wagons ready to load when the truck gets there. Bad thing about big wagons is when it gets wet or you got to go down hill or up one ! I have hauled a lot of equipment over the years BUT I aint never hauled a header like that ! Some people just get lucky, Me I know I would have gotten a ticket ! LOL We almost got a ticket when we hauled the AC corn head home, It was 8' 8" wide on a 102" wide trailer so 2" too wide ! I talked my way out of it after 45 min plus I don't think he wanted to do the paper work either ! LOL Bandit

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      That's nothing for being over width. Just hauling round bales I'm always over the edge of the trailer. If I had it my way, I'd be keeping the beans at home a few months, but the bin I wanted to rent fell through.

  • @KC2DZB

    Congrats on the new machine! Basic tune up stuff (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) would probably go a long way to making it fire easier. Fresh gas would probably be good too. If its the same (or a derivative) of the truck engine, it's a 351 (5.8L). If the carb has accelerator pumps, the diaphragms in them get hard with age and don't work as well. This would hurt your throttle response, if its the case.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      Ok, thanks for the information!

    • @rustyoldjunk
      @rustyoldjunk 6 років тому +3

      Not to be argumentative, but Ford used a 361 and a 391 in their medium and heavy duty trucks in the 1970’s. These were part of the F.E. block engines, similar to the 360’s, 390’s, etc used in pickups, but modified for heavy use. Ford did have the three different 351’s, the m, Cleveland, and Windsor, but I personally haven’t seen them in applications like this. Just my two cents, my guess is Jacob is likely correct that it is a 361 truck engine.

    • @KC2DZB
      @KC2DZB 6 років тому

      Good information Mike, thanks for sharing it. You're likely right it, you seem to know a lot about them and I was still playing with my Tonka trucks in the 80s. I do, however, stand by my thoughts on giving it a tuneup.

    • @rustyoldjunk
      @rustyoldjunk 6 років тому

      KC2DZB yup for sure on the tuneup. I think you can buy those accelerator pump diaphragms off eBay for a few bucks, had to replace them on my dump truck. They were leaking externally, as in gas running down the side of the block, not good

    Most of the cars in the 70's would put you in the back seat when you floored it. That 360 Ford engine will never fail you long as you can afford the fuel for that thirsty bugger. Good luck with the new equipment.

    I hope the new machine works good for you the 361 was a good truck engine it was in an f600 and F700 they were governed around 3900 in a truck I think it sounds good just spray lube on all the linkages a new fuel filter fresh fuel if it starts going over 200 degrees just ease off a little don't ever run it lean the heads are very expensive on that you will crap corn cobs

    • @boehmfarm4276

      Whooo doggy, that's spinning fast, I hope that's no true for this combine. If the engine gives me troubles, I have a dealer close enough with a TR grave yard. Dad said he saw another Ford diesel there. How is running lean hard on the head?

      Thank you for viewership! The manuals we had from the first TR70 had pages about the gasoline engines, but I never saw one until I found this on for sale. I still need to investigate the stiff shifting. Given the machine's history, I think it just needs grease and use to free up the linkages.

    Congratulations on the purchase. Always nice to get another piece of equipment. I enjoyed the ride along from where you unloaded it to your farm. what do you think is up with 3rd and 4th gear? Will you leave a corn head on one TR and the soybean head on the other, or will you use both combines for a given crop?

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      Either the gears weren't meshing in the transmission, or I had a little rust to break loose in the shift cables. If the combine stayed on the farm, there's a good chance third and fourth wren't used.

    • @boehmfarm4276

    • @boehmfarm4276

      The first bin and auger are used, the other auger is in the way and the other two bins need work, which I hope to accomplish this winter. One needs re anchored and both could be re tarred around the bottom. One has a partial drying floor, and the other is on concrete. I would like full drying floors in both.

    look like fairly good machine, could you buy like an old combine cart for your far away farms, because isnt that why you Bought the K, for the far away farms? so you could pull them to the fields on a cart, so wouldnt have to drive them?

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      I have set a new rule on the distance of fields I rent. If it's unreasonable to drive the combine there, the field isn't worth it. But that is why I bought the K. Even for closer fields, A cart would be nice so we can save the precious rice tires.

    Don't mean to sound harsh but in my opinion even a gas TR70 would be better than a K Gleaner (I don't like them tin can's though) Never knew they made a gas TR combine. Ours had the 3208. I know it's kind of a lot to ask but one of these days when you guys arnt slammed it would be neat to see a walk around of one or both of those combines with a things to look for when buying one. Hope to see some BTO shots of both in one field, that'd be neat!

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      I plan on making a "Can you spot the differences" video. The new one is a very early model. After trying some wet corn, I was ready for a twin rotor. If we have time, I want to get all three in the same field just once. But with the way I am getting calls on the K, it may not happen.

    • @samtalley791
      @samtalley791 6 років тому

      I was saying the combine it’s self (TR70) is better than a K Gleaner. And if your baising your bias on gas vs diesel combines, gas is highly more likely to catch on fire and burn and also I would be willing to bet that Jacobs combine will burn 1/4 to 1/2 as much MORE fuel in a day over his dads with the ford diesel. You need to do a little more reading into comments and understanding.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      Now, if dad's TR70 had the Cat diesel, then fuel consumption with the gas might be close.

      Me neither, but I know the manuals acknowledge their existence.

    How come you didn't put in 4th gear while on the highway

    • @boehmfarm4276

      I struggled enough trying to get it into third. I didn't want to stop again, if I had issues, so I kept a steady pace.

      Isn't that going to have to be fixed - somethings not right

      Why do they need three combines?

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      Because I want a rotary combine. The K is for sale. I have set hard distance limits of fields to rent. I bought the K because it would fit on a 30" deck over trailer to haul it 40 miles out to a field that never froze.

    more new old stuff to fix ?? u should get something slightly newer, like a ummm CR 8090. then u can finish all your harvesting in 1 good day and park it till next year, should last you 30+ more years with no repairs for at least 10 years, at your current farming size. look at all that saved time you will have for making more bales.

      It's pretty well running, change the engine oil, grease it and check the concave, fan and sieve adjustments. The bean head needs a couple little plastic parts, which I can borrow off a parts unit we have. I don't see why these TR70s can't last another thirty years. They probably cost less than one payment for a new CR model, which we don't cover the acres to justify. The time saved would apply to wheat, which we rarely plant. I don't like stubble and stalk bales because I don't want to deal with them for bedding if I can't sell them all.

      so the real answer is that you just love the challenge of fixing old broken down equipment, no matter what it is, you just love trying to figure things out, as with the new modern equipment your skills in fixing won't work with computer chips and hundreds of miles of wires and relays and just tech. a near by farmer got a new, new holland combine this past harvest, brand new. started cutting and in seconds the system shut down all plugged up. rotor never came on, even though the computer read out speed and everything was working. lucky for powerful reverser to back out everything. whole problem was due to some dust on a sencor, try and run any combine without making dust.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      That's why I don't want new electric controlled stuff.

    • @alancooper5386
      @alancooper5386 6 років тому

      i wonder if some dust on the other sencors effects things like false bushels per ac read out and all those other things they now have on their touch screens. oh look we are getting 250bus corn, seen that on another channel, but was it true or was it dusty.

      We have and know the TR70 very well. I found a three row wide head for sale for the K, and then I found the TR70 much closer and well enough priced. If I didn't see the TR, I would have driven to PA for that three row head.

      It seems like that old new holand is a pretty good combine considering the age(ignoring the not being able to shift into high gear haha) last year I didn't see any problem videos regarding the one you already had so I'm assuming everything worked nice. Do you guys actually do enough acres to where you wanted to get another one? Also you'll have to invest in rice tires with all that Clay you got out there. Where in PA was the header? Was it around Pittsburgh that you'd be willing to drive to a different state. I live in eastern PA so just curious

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      We should have both out in the field, but I have had too much other harvest stuff to deal with. If I can find more acreage, it will be very nice to have two combines, and it looks better to land owners that I am prepared. And lets just say these two combines cost less than buying a 14 series IH. I am searching for rice tires too, but it looks like I will need wider rims for the more common 28L x 26 rice tires. I think the 3 row for the K was near Erie, PA.
