1845. Howrah was a fast growing commercial centre developed by the East India Company to facilitate its growing trade across the Hooghly River. It was in Cullen place which would be named Mukhram Kanoria Road after Independence, that the third Vicar Apostolic, Msgr. Carew, decided to build a small school. What was a noble enterprise with a humble beginning has blossomed over the past 125 years into proud educational institution that provides holistic education to more than 1200 students every year.
In 1894, under the initiative of Fr. Medlycott and some Christian Brothers the school was revived. Another milestone was reached when in 1911, Fr. De Wacchter set up a boarding facility for poor Catholics and orphan Anglo-Indian children of the locality. Nonetheless, the rectors and principals of the institution readily accepted into its growing family children of other faiths and communities also.
One of the earliest Christian educational institutions in the area, St. Aloysius Orphanage and Day School soon made itself well known for its values and social obligations. In 1946, one of the greatest developments that was brought about by Fr. Peter Gomes, was the subsequent construction of a huge building with better class rooms, a hall and presbytery. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in 1950 by Archbishop Ferdinand Perier and soon classes were conducted there.
In 1974, the school won affiliation to the Council for India School Certificate examination and two years later, under the guidance of Fr. Michael Bhaju, The first batch of students appeared for ICSE.
This year, with the initiative of the present Principal, Fr. Devraj Fernandes, the very first batch for ISC has been enrolled. The legacy of the founding fathers of this great institution lives on. The process of growth and development continues unhindered.
