Elvis partly followed Jerry's example when he met Priscila: "On September 13, 1959, fourteen year old Priscilla Beaulieu met 24-year old Elvis Presley at a party, at his home in Bad Nauheim, Germany, which he had rented during his military service" (Source: Wikipedia).
One of his wives was a friend of my mom’s. They went to junior high together. Dorothy Barton was my mom’s friend. Her dad was pastor of the Assembly of God church in Sterlington, Louisiana.

My Mom was 16 and my Dad was 21 when they got married. And yes we're from the south. It wasn't uncommon way back then. 13 years old is wayyyyy too young though still for back then. Oddly enough, I was 16 when I had my first boyfriend who was 21. I had to sneak around though, and didn't understand why my parents forbid it, and one night, when I came home, tipsy from drinking with my boyfriend, at around 3 AM, wayyyyy past my curfew, my stepdad was waiting. My boyfriend pulled up to our driveway to drop me off. My stepdad came outside, with a shotgun. He calmly walked up to my boyfriend's car, told me to get inside the house. With his shotgun in his hand, he opened the passenger door of my boyfriend's car, sat in the seat, and closed the door. I ran inside like I was told. My boyfriend told me the next day, that my stepdad pointed the shotgun at him, and told him he wasn't going to see me anymore, or he'd kill him. Needless to say, I continued to sneak around to see him. We were together for 7 years. We were engaged when I was 18. But, I broke it off, but we stayed together until I was 23. Then I left him for someone else. I have a daughter who will be 21 this month, and if she tried to date a 21 year old man, when she was 16, I probably would have shot him myself. It's funny that when you become a parent, I really understood then the problem with a 21 year old wanting to date a 16 year old. Not saying my boyfriend was a bad guy, not at all. He treated me like a queen. But, it still wasn't right.
Happens a lot. My grandma was around 16 when she met my 30 something year old grandpa and they married right after she graduated high school (he was big on education and wanted to wait until she graduated and helped her get into college later). Kind of weird though, even back then her parents weren't happy and chased him off, supposedly once even with a gun, but the forbidden fruit angle only made her love him more.
My grandma was 13 and my grandpa 19 when they married. They had a wonderful 79 year marriage until he died she only made it months after he died. Things were different back then. My grandpa was kind and wonderful to her all her life. They had 13 kids and had a successful wonderful life together.
I've read statistics that marriages with an age Gap end in divorce less often and usually last longer. Often it can because the younger person is mature for their age and doesn't like people their own age. My dad was around 10 years older than my mom and 15 years older than my stepmom (married for around 15 years now) and my biological grandpa was 15 or 20 years older than my grandma (married tor around 15 years) and she remarried later to a man 5 years younger than her (married for over 40 years). Most of the longest marriages I've seen were either high school sweethearts who waited until they were established financially to get married or they had a sizable age gap.

@@jaysmith179It's all very well saying that, but just because you are dating someone doesn't mean there is anything sexual going on. Jerry Lee Lewis wasn't breaking the law anyway as this girl was over the age of consent when she married him.
Well in case you're not aware of it then, John Adams and I mean John Adams as in the second President of the United States was courting Abigail when she was 13 and he was 23. They were supposed to marry when she hit 15 but the mother hated him because he was the son of a farmer. Finally when Abigail reached 19 years of age she put her foot down on her mother and they were married. In a letter to Thomas Jefferson after Abigail passed, when he indicated his sorrow at having lost his wife of 54 years and lover for many more that would indicate that they were definitely doing the nasty when she was underaged. This was not unacceptable at the time. Just pointing this out.

Many of his stories are not what really happened like that of graceland. There are so many versions of it one can never be sure as to what has actually happened. He himself said that it was just a joke and the cop didn't get it and arrested JLL

Don't you need a marriage license in the south? What municipality granted Jerry and Myrna a marriage license? It is never mentioned where the wedding took place but a clergy person or a municipal judge had to have performed the ceremony.
Sort of uncomfortable with the cousin thing still, eh? It is legal most places because science discovered decades ago that there are no health issues, and even some benefits. As for her age: Legal age varies somewhat by jurisdiction; apparently, no laws were broken in Mr. Lewis' case. Morally, minimum age is an individual judgement and is extremely variable, subject to personal experience and beliefs. Various religions have guidelines, or at least mentions in their holy texts, almost always referring to an age far younger than that with which moderns are comfortable. Nature says one thing, society says another, and the law says a third. To me, that says pick your own minimum age unapologetically, which Mr. Lewis apparently did.

It's still legal to marry thirteen-year-old girls and a couple states in America we really need to change these walls it happens a handful of times every year
I did once know someone at one time who was dating a girl of 13/14 despite being in his early twenties. She married him at 16/17 as it was still legal back then.
He should of went to jail for messing with a under age child.
@@jaysmith179It's all very well saying that, but just because you are dating someone doesn't mean there is anything sexual going on. Jerry Lee Lewis wasn't breaking the law anyway as this girl was over the age of consent when she married him.
Third cousins are distant enough that it's legal. It was a different time then.

Loretta Lynn was married when she was 15 and her husband Oliver Lynn who was 21
President Roosevelt. married his cousin as well.

Even back then marrying a 13 year old was scandalous. That's a major reason why his career faltered.
I knew. And I've seen the movie.
I saw the movie too
His cousins were Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart.
"Shaddup, ya mothers. This is The Killer singing, and nobody interrupts The Killer!" That's what Jerry Lee used to say to US audiences who booed him after marrying Myra. Jerry Lee had the last laugh. He's a rock god while his critics are dead or silent. For a taste of The Killer at his finest check out his anthology, Jerry Lee Lewis, "Monsters".
Fun fact: He predicted Alabama memes.

@kay8698 Hey I 100% agree with you!
She was more of a niece 😢😢😢😢😢 then a cousin🥹
If you read the Wiki bio for JLL ,it paints a picture of a vile man . Marrying his 13 year old cousin was just one highlight. Or lowlight.
In another incident ,he got drunk ,took a gun and drove to Elvis' Graceland . He crashed through the gate and Elvis called the cops on him.
He married 7 times. Most of the marriages lasted for less than 2 years
Many of his stories are not what really happened like that of graceland.

He was a great performer but not so great to his family. May God have mercy on his soul.
Remember this is Louisiana we are talking about here

The fact that marrying his 13-year-old cousin ended his career shows that it WASN'T as common place, and people WEREN'T as open to it, because it's SICK. It was sick then just like it's sick now.
Not really. Elvis dated Priscilla when she was 14 and Elizabeth II married Philip around that time. They were related as well.

If you open your mouth and try to slander someone, it always requires clear legal evidence to back up your position, otherwise it is the shouts of another pathetic clown who tries to impose labels on others backing up with his stupid notorious subjective opinion only.
She wasn`t forced to marry him at all, they had strong feelings for each other and remained close throughout their life together and even later, she herself spoke openly criticizing the unfair and biased reaction of the press and never regretted their marriage or her early wedding. ANYONE can read her interviews or even her books.
Therefore as we see, I could repeat, you and others like you who are trying to impose their own morality and point of view on others have no right to shout. You have 0 arguments against and should be called SICK in turn based on your limited ability to judge someone
