Don’t forge you can’t run full court, you can’t pass full court, you have to stand 3 feet away from the person with the ball, when you go out of bounds you get the ball back, & you have to shoot inside the line where they some how don’t shoot 100%

i think people need to stop comparing netball with other sports and talk lowly about it. it is A Sport and like any other sport, we respect it. I have played Netball for 10 years and i think like any other sport, there will b moments that are tough and are trained with sometimes blood, sweat and tears.

If you read the very first, original set of rules for Naismith's 'Basketball' you'll realise that it is in fact nearer to what we now call netball. Dribbling came later - it was physically impossible to dribble because balls were hand made and irregular. If you stop to put down the McD burger & read some history you'll also realise Naismith was technically a British subject. It's funny how nations re-write history isn't it? :)

reminds me of when we were kids. no basketball net so we cut a hole in a fishing net, didnt dribble and used a soccer ball the throw it in the net. weird sport.

so are defenders not allowed to block shots or come in contact with the offensive player once they start to posture for a shot? those are the most boring uncontested gimme pooch shots over and over again. i guess the excitement of the game is all about connecting passes to the other end of the court.

No, you're allowed to stand three feet or more away. Any closer is an obstruction. If they are standing by their side it's because they've been pulled up for an obstruction and the shooter is allowed to shoot with only the other defender to guard her.

Your point is so-so. But look at it differently. Sports such as netball requires various skills such as balance, co ordination and agility.(Etc.) Every sport is skilful and competitive. So unless you haven't play the actual sport, dont go saying it's 'fucking stupid'.

this is one of the best sporting rivalries ive seen in the world i saw this match live and it was freaking amazing at the halfway stage i thought australia had lost it but it was incredible play by bassett that got australia back into the game...she should have got player of the match rather than medhurst though they both had a fantastic game
I’m looking at the comments and I’m like wtf. This is netball not basketball, not ultimate frisbee, not lacrosse or anything. Netball has their own rules just like any other sport. Everyone is judging by what they see, it isn’t as easy as it looks. I know everyone has their own opinion on it, but please do realise that a lot of people play this sport, it’s very popular in Australia and many other places.
We may have lost, But we can hold our heads high, cause The Silver Ferns are hearty, they get fantastic support from All New Zealanders, and also GREAT media coverage, ie T V and newspapers and also awesome sponsorship. So heads up Silver Ferns. Oh and just off the record, we are still 7's champs and we did'nt loose a game at the soccer world cup :D

One advantage of watching this on TV is that you know exactly how much time is left. It is traditional during netball tournaments that the on-site scoreboard stops the clock with 1 minute left, but when you watch it on TV, they keep the clock running.

I remember watching this game. Such a fantastic contest between the two top teams in the world, and such a nail-biting finish. As the commentators said, it was the first match to go into overtime like this with the championship on the line, and my god, I do think it's going to go down in history as one of the best grand finals of the world championship.

There is no defense on shots? All you have to do is get the ball near the net? This looks really dumb
You can either intercept when the feed into the circle is put in, or block from a metre where the player's at by timing. You can also force a held ball (possession of the ball for more than 3 seconds) by leaning and stall the player's shot. Watch Laura Geitz highlights or Geva Mentor highlights to fully understand what you can do in defense.

There is nothing as nerve wracking as an Australia V New Zealand Test in Netball.
I just drove past the local netball courts where I live, and there are 20 courts, side by side. on one huge concrete pad. And the games go from early morning till mid afternoon. Very popular sport for girls throughout Australia and NZ
@Tarklovishki I don't think a comparison to basketball is possible there in that sense, since a basketball player with the ball wouldn't just stand next to a defender like that and shoot and if they did, the defender would actually jump up to block the ball directly.

This is the first time i know about this game and it seems pretty interesting to me and I'm a huge basketball fan.
The idea of not being able to move with the ball in your hands makes they move in a really cool way and seems to be a very strategical game.
The only thing i dislike (i don't know the rules) is about the game stoping so often just when they're getting close to the basket...

@RandomMissChatterBox if you can jump with the ball, why do they always stand there lamely and throw it up from 2 feet away (and miss)? Why don't they take layups? And why does the defender always stand there with her arm out but not try to make contact with the ball or jump?

I almost cried at 14:48. Makes me so sad that the girls couldnt win it for players like George and Van Dyk. I just wana give them a big hug for thier effort:). They deserved to go out with a win.I highly doubt they will be around in 2015. Players like Catherine Latu will have to step it up if she wants to fill th shoes of Van Dyk. Shes not as good as Van dyk but shes still young and will improve more.
I'm sorry I tried to be open minded about this game but this is literally basketball without running while in control of the ball and no longer range shots looks quite simple not a whole lot of skill involved besides the shooting only because the absence of a backboard. I think the hardest thing about this game is remembering the rules since I've never heard or played this game
Well how about posting some so we can see how good they play, maybe if we can get it world wide it can get in the Olympics, I sure would love that. Atleast Netball is played in the Commonwealth Games.

They aren't completely different they are very similar. Same with football and rugby. Football emerged from rugby and basketball emerged from netball. While the rules are different it's literally the same concept and takes almost the same athletic qualities

As far as rugby and american football. I can comment because Ive played both my whole life. Once again minor differences, both similar skillsets except in rugby you have to have more endurance. I could break it down more specifically but hoping you just get the point

It's interesting reading all the comments... I mean, trolls, sure. But it isn't really like basketball....because you're not allowed to bounce it or it becomes a 'replay' and you have to turn the ball over. No 3's. No backboards. Starts from the centre, not the baseline. The penalty/foul system is totally different. The comparison to handball is kinda more like it, a little bit more precision and a little less physical anger in netball...well, that's my opinion. I've played netball in mixed social teams for years and it is a lot of fun.
The passing is a bit like handball but nothing else , no physicallity, no goals with a keeper and no rebonds.

Didn't know what netball was when I heard it mentioned so I looked it up, read the rules and then looked for a video and landed on this one. With my wee bit of knowledge of how it is played, this was good introduction. That being said, it seemed to me that AU got a bit lucky in this one. I'm not saying they aren't great, but they made several really sloppy errors, but got away with a few of them anyway. NZ just looked like they played a tighter period but were not able to capitalize on those mistakes. (And again, I might be way off with the whole sum total of 45 minutes of checking out this sport!) Personally I thought it was fun to watch.

@MrIslandboy82 she didnt cause that loss. Its was Maria's choke shot that cost us. Theres no doubt Maria is talented but when she has an off game, she will have an reall bad OFF game. Van Dyk announced she is still willing to play, and I hope she does but if she last till 2015, she will most likely be a back goal shoot by 2015.

I was under the impressions that Aussies and Kiwis were friends and helped each other out in times of crisis?? I thought that had just happened with the tsunami that NZ experienced? Can anyone explain why everything ive read says the players should not be goalside in defence but this is how these girls are defending about 85% of the time ? My daughter is playing and when she defends she is not goalside and her opposite simply loses her for an easy pass ? Shes only 12 but i would like to help her . Any tips ladies
