No, you're allowed to stand three feet or more away. Any closer is an obstruction. If they are standing by their side it's because they've been pulled up for an obstruction and the shooter is allowed to shoot with only the other defender to guard her.

People that play soccer for example spend every day practicing shooting goals because its their job. But in the world cup when they get a penalty they still miss! Why? Because they aren't trained enough? No! Because of PRESSURE!!
If you read the very first, original set of rules for Naismith's 'Basketball' you'll realise that it is in fact nearer to what we now call netball. Dribbling came later - it was physically impossible to dribble because balls were hand made and irregular. If you stop to put down the McD burger & read some history you'll also realise Naismith was technically a British subject. It's funny how nations re-write history isn't it? :)

this is one of the best sporting rivalries ive seen in the world i saw this match live and it was freaking amazing at the halfway stage i thought australia had lost it but it was incredible play by bassett that got australia back into the game...she should have got player of the match rather than medhurst though they both had a fantastic game
I remember watching this game. Such a fantastic contest between the two top teams in the world, and such a nail-biting finish. As the commentators said, it was the first match to go into overtime like this with the championship on the line, and my god, I do think it's going to go down in history as one of the best grand finals of the world championship.

I'm sorry I tried to be open minded about this game but this is literally basketball without running while in control of the ball and no longer range shots looks quite simple not a whole lot of skill involved besides the shooting only because the absence of a backboard. I think the hardest thing about this game is remembering the rules since I've never heard or played this game

the footwork in netball is crazy. There's freedom in basketball which means it requires skill to get around other players, so that's what you're defending your sport with. Netball consists of simple passes and rigid rules which I guess makes it look awkward and like it doesn't need skill. But it requires full knowledge of the sport including the rules and how to use them to your advantage. the haters probably haven't played it. Ive played both basketball and netball and I can say netball needs a hella lot more brains and energy. and as for the 4:22 miss shot, the she missed because it hit the defenders hand first :)
You need to know all the rules in every sport, especially as a professional.. You said it yourself its simple passes. Im sure with pros it is hard, all pro sports are extremely hard even frisbee. It is a pity that Netball has never been taken up by the Commercial TV networks. There is nothing as nerve wracking as an Australia V New Zealand Test in Netball. I just drove past the local netball courts where I live, and there are 20 courts, side by side. on one huge concrete pad. And the games go from early morning till mid afternoon. Very popular sport for girls throughout Australia and NZ
im a lad and i have to play netball as part of my btec sport course and i must say i think netball is quality. playing netball with the girls and lads is so fun and it almost knackers me out as much as rugby does !
Nice ironical comment This is the first time i know about this game and it seems pretty interesting to me and I'm a huge basketball fan. The idea of not being able to move with the ball in your hands makes they move in a really cool way and seems to be a very strategical game. The only thing i dislike (i don't know the rules) is about the game stoping so often just when they're getting close to the basket...
Didn't know what netball was when I heard it mentioned so I looked it up, read the rules and then looked for a video and landed on this one. With my wee bit of knowledge of how it is played, this was good introduction. That being said, it seemed to me that AU got a bit lucky in this one. I'm not saying they aren't great, but they made several really sloppy errors, but got away with a few of them anyway. NZ just looked like they played a tighter period but were not able to capitalize on those mistakes. (And again, I might be way off with the whole sum total of 45 minutes of checking out this sport!) Personally I thought it was fun to watch.
I almost cried at 14:48. Makes me so sad that the girls couldnt win it for players like George and Van Dyk. I just wana give them a big hug for thier effort:). They deserved to go out with a win.I highly doubt they will be around in 2015. Players like Catherine Latu will have to step it up if she wants to fill th shoes of Van Dyk. Shes not as good as Van dyk but shes still young and will improve more.
It's interesting reading all the comments... I mean, trolls, sure. But it isn't really like basketball....because you're not allowed to bounce it or it becomes a 'replay' and you have to turn the ball over. No 3's. No backboards. Starts from the centre, not the baseline. The penalty/foul system is totally different. The comparison to handball is kinda more like it, a little bit more precision and a little less physical anger in netball...well, that's my opinion. I've played netball in mixed social teams for years and it is a lot of fun.

the footwork in netball is crazy. There's freedom in basketball which means it requires skill to get around other players, so that's what you're defending your sport with. Netball consists of simple passes and rigid rules which I guess makes it look awkward and like it doesn't need skill. But it requires full knowledge of the sport including the rules and how to use them to your advantage. the haters probably haven't played it. Ive played both basketball and netball and I can say netball needs a hella lot more brains and energy. and as for the 4:22 miss shot, the she missed because it hit the defenders hand first :)

You need to know all the rules in every sport, especially as a professional.. You said it yourself its simple passes. Im sure with pros it is hard, all pro sports are extremely hard even frisbee. Pros are pros. That being said no f’n way is this harder than the dribbling and footwork needed to get thru traffic in basketball. Or shooting 3s from the far corner.
Nah... It seems all you need to be is a good shooter from mid range. Like if your defender has to be 3 FEET away all you need to do is have a quick release
It's hard for me to get this after years of watching and playing basketball. Is there no contact? It seems once they get in the semi-circle that all you can do is put your arms up and hope for the best. I'm not belittling Netball, it really intrigues me!

Americans should realise that netball is more about precision and speed. I've seen people call netball stupid then try to play. y'all wouldn't last a fucking second on a netball court. stop pulling sports down when you're just sitting on your ass. why don't you go try and play netball under high pressure at this level and tell me it's easy. you don't know a thing.

There is nothing as nerve wracking as an Australia V New Zealand Test in Netball.
I just drove past the local netball courts where I live, and there are 20 courts, side by side. on one huge concrete pad. And the games go from early morning till mid afternoon. Very popular sport for girls throughout Australia and NZ

im a lad and i have to play netball as part of my btec sport course and i must say i think netball is quality. playing netball with the girls and lads is so fun and it almost knackers me out as much as rugby does !

This is the first time i know about this game and it seems pretty interesting to me and I'm a huge basketball fan.
The idea of not being able to move with the ball in your hands makes they move in a really cool way and seems to be a very strategical game.
The only thing i dislike (i don't know the rules) is about the game stoping so often just when they're getting close to the basket...

Didn't know what netball was when I heard it mentioned so I looked it up, read the rules and then looked for a video and landed on this one. With my wee bit of knowledge of how it is played, this was good introduction. That being said, it seemed to me that AU got a bit lucky in this one. I'm not saying they aren't great, but they made several really sloppy errors, but got away with a few of them anyway. NZ just looked like they played a tighter period but were not able to capitalize on those mistakes. (And again, I might be way off with the whole sum total of 45 minutes of checking out this sport!) Personally I thought it was fun to watch.

I almost cried at 14:48. Makes me so sad that the girls couldnt win it for players like George and Van Dyk. I just wana give them a big hug for thier effort:). They deserved to go out with a win.I highly doubt they will be around in 2015. Players like Catherine Latu will have to step it up if she wants to fill th shoes of Van Dyk. Shes not as good as Van dyk but shes still young and will improve more.
It's interesting reading all the comments... I mean, trolls, sure. But it isn't really like basketball....because you're not allowed to bounce it or it becomes a 'replay' and you have to turn the ball over. No 3's. No backboards. Starts from the centre, not the baseline. The penalty/foul system is totally different. The comparison to handball is kinda more like it, a little bit more precision and a little less physical anger in netball...well, that's my opinion. I've played netball in mixed social teams for years and it is a lot of fun.
The passing is a bit like handball but nothing else , no physicallity, no goals with a keeper and no rebonds.

I had never heard of netball until I saw this video and I thought this must be some obscure sport no one cares about, until I saw how many fans were in the crowd.
netball has been around since the 1930s so its not like its a new sport so to all those haters out there give it a go and you'll see why its an international sport it's a tougher game than it looks ne way to all the americans dissin this game it is played in america azwell and you also have a national team, just letting ya know
