Cali Rivera: Cowbell Maker

  • In The Bronx, there's a man who builds instruments for the world's great Latin percussionists: Tito Puente, Eddie Montalvo, Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Sanabria. He has no signs, no storefront, no advertising of any kind. But people call him from around the world for work: After all, there's nothing quite like one of his handmade cowbells.
Calixto "Cali" Rivera's father was an instrument maker, and he picked up the tradition. He once made congas, bongos and other drums, but these days he specializes in cowbells of all sorts. He makes them with machines he designed himself, with only his wife for support.
Jazz Night In America visited him at his JCR Percussion workshop to find out how he makes strong metal into strong bells.--PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

years ago SNL made fun of cowbells in one of their comedy sketches and it was freaking funny but to us, JCR cowbells are the ultimate, Americans just don't understand how important these instruments are to a passionate latin musician.....enough said, l missed these cowbells......

A great man, may his soul rest in peace.
Cali Revera custom made a Stand for Tabla (an Indian classical percussion instrument triditionally played sitting on the floor) at my request.
Cali was intrigued and amazed when I first introduced him to Tabla, he helped design a tool for musicians of Indian musical tradition to be able to fuse with jazz musician on stage, and many of them are in use today...
    Rest in Peace brother...

I have 3 bongo cowbells from JCR. I got the first one in 1971-72 when he had a tiny shop in a basement in the Bronx. He was a nice guy.

JCR closed shop due to Cali's declining health. There are still some bells out "in the wild" (Sam Ash, Guitar Center, and some other big box retailers).

There is a guy named Pete Lugo, worked at JCR under Cali for over 50 years. He was Cali’s right hand man and is carrying on the legacy. By far, I recommend his bells. Look him up on Facebook under his name. You will be happy. He is a great humble guy and makes an EXCELLENT product!
