Forget speed, Sonic's real superpower is hyper-perception. Acrobatics at that speed and still having a relatively good idea of where you are in space, enough to be able to react in time? It's more impressive than simply _going_ fast.

@@silverviz5600 Not just reflexes, but the cognizance to _use_ those reflexes properly. It's not just reaction time that's required for speed, _processing_ time is crucial as well. Then again, he can rationalize details of the scenery so quickly, it makes sense for him to always do _spinning_ jumps, because that gives him a quick view of everything below, above and behind him as well as ahead... brilliant strategy if you can _actually_ "see" that fast
Yeah, being a speedster in any medium usually grants you hyper perception because if it was the speed on its own without the adjustment of their mental processing power for sight and sound, they'd be dead in a fairly short space of time. You can also include physical durability to that list because even with hyper perception utilising that speed effectively is a learning process full of collisions.
@@1thepieman I mean I think part of where this mod falls down is representing Sonic's information gathering about the world around him. Really it only seems to show exactly where he's going, but in reality he would be looking around him constantly imo. Before and after he made a jump to go into a homing attack, he would be locking his view onto the enemy he was about to hit. At certain points his head would likely move to counter his body's rotation, like a ballerina when spinning. In reality Sonic's view would probably be a lot less disorienting than it looks here.
Also I love how the camera goes absolutely mental on the level clear screens.

To be honest, if it weren't for all the flipping I think a sonic VR game wouldn't be half bad. I think if you decreased the speed like 30 to 40 percent and had the camera stay upright you'd be good

You could have a 3rd person view and it would still be quite cool.
The fact that Sonic WILLINGLY jumps by performing multiple high-speed spins in the air just goes to show how dedicated and good he is at what he does.
And he LOVES it too. He’d be the type of person that you can’t keep in one place all the time without getting him depressed or cranky. He needs this freedom all the time.
he also should make the screen black when sonic spins bc he essentially has no vision while tucked, making his spatial awareness that much more impressive at high speeds
I'm fairly certain when spinning like that he closes his eyes....fairly but the sprite work implies he doesn't and that's where it's really concerning.

The fact that he is this fast and also eats Chilli Dogs, its amazing he doesnt have a trail of vomit behind him everywhere he goes
He has no internal fluids, as the intense forces at work would cause him to burst. His body converts Chili Dogs into various gases that fill and power his body.
I imagine he would know better than to run with stomach flu.

For everyone saying how sickening this must be for Sonic, keep in mind that this is basically the view of a gopro strapped to his head. Sonic would have a much greater field of view, and his eyes would compensate for all of the shaking, just like ours do whenever we're moving.
not to mention our eyes don't fall behind us when we skateboard or go on a rail or glitch into the floor or phase into our body or see through walls cause we stand too close lol

Bear in mind Sonic processes everything going on much faster as well, hence how he's able to operate so precisely at such speeds.
Throw this thing on slow-mo for the true experience of how Sonic perceives it all.
Even then I'm still impressed, 'cause on .25 speed, I can process things better, but still not a good chunk of it.
Or put it on X2 speed for fun, and see how long you can go before you hurl.

But Sonic talks at normal speed so that likely isn't true. Not like how the Salarians in Mass Effect clearly talk and think faster than everyone else. Though the added side effect of having a much reduced lifespan.

I'm quite certain he spots while he spins (see also: ballerinas), it's just not something they showed in this video. It reduces dizziness AND keeps him aware of which way he's going.

@@reyntime8735 It's when you focus on a spot/object in front of you. This reduces the dizziness you get from spinning around becuase it allows your eyes to calibrate while your inner ears are still catching up on the change in acceleration. Also, imo it keeps your head more still while spinning around. you can try this by focusing on an object at your eye level while spinning around and then spinning around without focusing on anything. It works wonders.
To be fair, this game mod was equivalent to sonic wearing a gopro, so take it with a grain of salt.
I like that sonic runs so fast that he’s able to see himself from a 2 dimensional 3rd person perspective so he can see where he’s going in a two dimensional world

To be fair the hard work came from Sonic's team for developing the game in 3D. Which then enabled a modder to simply attach the camera to sonic's head.

I think's sonic's actual FoV would be really high considering his massive eyes situation. Also when he spins he would be able to perceive and simulate his surroundings in full 360 vision since his reflexes just as fast as him. Would be similar to the third person camera view that we as the players have during gameplay.

My theory is, what if it LOOKS fast for us but in sonic's view he's just so fast that everything is slower for him, which is why he can keep up with every obstacle he faces so easily.
I feel like this how WE see Sonic, Sonic probably sees this but really slow.
Indeed, his brain would have to operate at a much higher speed compared to ours in order to process all of that sensory input and make sense of it.
Imagine all of the "slow mo" scenes from Flash or Quicksilver's perspective and Sonic's perception is close to that.

People talk about his high perception and speed but no one talks about how strong his neck support is. If we went at a similar speed our heads would either be flung back or down due to the pressure of the wind hitting us hard.

His neck is tiny to nonexistent (by length, not depth and width) so ALOT of tension by g forces would be needed to rip his head off. Its like trying to snap a short, stubby twig in two with just your hands in comparison to a long, thin one.

He got used to it, he got a tiny bit faster each game.
Humans usually have a reaction time in relation to how fast their body is able to go. For example, if you were going for a morning jog you would be more likely to know relatively where you are as opposed to riding a super fast rollercoaster. Sure, you may know that you are on a rollercoaster, but you wouldn't know where exactly you are. I feel like Sonic is like that, he doesn't feel like he's going fast, but to our perception, he is going fast. In reality, running as he does inside the game should feel like, per say, how we run during a track meet. It's kinda like The Flash, how to us, he's gone in a flash (pun intented), but for him, it may seem like a run in the park.

If he spins fast enough, his eyes would be able to catch all of the incoming photons in all directions, and so he would virtually have 360 degrees of vision. And the speeds needed to do that would be near light speed.
He was bragging that light speed was just “small time” for him so I wouldn’t be surprised
So big eyes are biological ASSETS to him, not just stylish, and assuming he has a transparent layer around his eyes to prevent dust from coming in this makes perfect sense.
I feel like the developers REALLY have to take this into consideration when developing a new sonic game since this video is bringing awareness of Sonics point of view

This mod is random, bit it really makes you see just how detailed Gens is.
The textures are so high resolution. The grassy patches actually have proper grass. Like, they spent so much time polishing all the small things.
Someone should do this for Unleashed.

To my surprise, the thing that disoriented me the most is how Sonic turns around INSTANTLY on the 2D portions making it look like he's teleported to a whole other section of the stage when in reality he just looked the other direction

See... this is why I would choose time control over super speed. The perception and balance required to actually move fast (given your body can withstand the forces brutally acting against it) are nothing short of astronomical.

The flash, quicksilver, sonic technically all have sped up brains since they can process movement faster than milliseconds and way past normal capacity. in theory they should be able to hyper-learn and figure out solutions to problems within seconds.

I think what this needs is a bit of a motion blur for all the flipping.
The camera also needs to be able to focus straight ahead where Sonic should be looking, rather than the direction Sonic is pointing his noise.
I know the game doesn't really have animations for that, but it's definitely something to think about for improving upon this experience.

I never thought about it like this. Makes what he does more incredible now. Think of the G forces involved when spinning that fast and how he must process time in order to make millisecond decisions. I bet time moves slower for him.

in most living creatures we have a 'counter motion' system in our eyes so that our heads can turn while our eyes stay locked. think about: if you're looking at one point and turn your head around, especially if you're wearing goggles or glasses, your nose and face and the frames of whatever headwear you're wearing are moving _around your eyes._ While your eyes remain level and steady, specifically.
Spin jumping require vision on the side of his head then. Because ain't no way he's tracking a triple front flip

@@Gumshoesamurai Probably a high aptitude for vestibular sensing. Sonic might also peek out a bit as he's flipping to be able to adjust and dash towards enemies as necessary.
I had this in mind at least for the jittery running. You can see a more obvious effect of this with birds. They are able to keep their heads perfectly level and still while their bodies move. It doesn't explain how he can see with the way he jumps but yeah.
Watch a dancer do a spin sometimes. They'll often hold their head level until they must turn their head, then whip around to refocus on the same spot.
Obviously the head has to be moved for sime maneuvers, but for basic running and jumping, eyes can fix just fine.
If this was realistic (and why should it be, it's just a meme after all) we'd expect to be looking at distant objects of focus, or the expected landing spots of basic jumps, with the camera only going crazy when the eyes cant reasonably fix on something
I actually thought about this, although I thought a slow motion mechanic would be useful. Kinda like a "focus" mode to use a limited time for some strategy, since you don't need it as much on a straight stretch as opposed to twists and turns. Still cool to see someone else had the same idea.
